A Professional mechanic shares things you should never do when buying a New or Used car in the times of chip shortage in 2021 and 2022.
Folks I love you deeply, Never do this when buying a car. Buying a new car or a used car is usually a happy time where you upgrade or start new car ownership. but in these difficult times for the car market things can go south very quickly before you realize it.
With the current climate of the car market some dealerships are becoming very crafty in finding ways to take advantage of the shortages of cars. Honest dealerships will do what's right and continue doing what's right. But those who take advantage of the situation are to be avoided.
In this video I will share with you some tips and things you should never do when buying a new or used cars in these times. Please don't be a victim to the shameful tactics that some dealerships are using to seize the moment and make extra profits from your hard earned money.
The common theme of this video is to that no car is worth more than what's it's worth. Usually inflated prices for cars are reserved for high end, rare and exotic cars because of their nature. But I'm seeing similar trends for normal every day cars. Please be aware of this and don't part ways with your hard earned money easily.
From the bottom of my heart I wish you are never taken advantage of in this tough market. It's not worth it and it's not right. May the lord bless you and keep you.

Unless you don’t have a ride and need a vehicle, the cheapest car is the current car you own! Just wait it out as things will eventually improve once all these chip manufacturing issues have been sorted out. Dealerships are “gouging” because people are desperate..which is sad! Don’t let them (dealerships) get away with it!

couple things id add to this 1- never act desperate at the dealer, act like you could careless if you got that car or truck, if they see you are desperate they will take advantage of you 2- look outside the box, ie, find the small dealership in the middle of where, they will have less foot traffic and more likely to have something 3- NEVER use their financing unless is a promotional rate (ie 0%), the fianance department can, and will, bump your interest rate up to 2% (why pay more per month for the finance guy to get a kick back from the bank. BUT, do not walk in the door telling them you are paying cash or have your own bank check, as they wont even talk to you then, just push off the "payment" calculation by saying "oh ill worry about the payment amounts once we figure out what car/truck i want and settle on a deal" 4- get GAP insurance on your loan, as if you total the car/truck, and you owe $20,000 on it, and all insurance will cover is $15,000 it will pay the $5000 to pay off the loan! now youre not stuck paying $5000 for a car/truck you no longer have, or rolling that amount into a loan on a replacement car/truck, GAP insurance is around $120 total! this is the cheapest insurance you can ever buy!!!! i managed to sell my truck this spring for nearly msrp of what it was new (55k msrp for a 2016 ram 3500 cummins, and got 46k in cash for it with 50k on the clock) and paid off my loan for well more then i owed, went to the bank, paid off my credit card, and a personal loan my work car was taken on as it was too old for a car loan, and put the rest down on a brand new 2021 silverado, got $5k in rebates and $1k off sticker ontop of the rebates. all by driving 20 extra miles one way to a small dealer in the middle of no where, didnt tell them i had a pre-approved loan check at the bank, made the deal, and drove to my credit union, picked up the check, and drove back to the dealer. finance guy was mad as hell and pretty much threw the keys at me, i walked away smiling and got a way better rate then their "best" rate. also, dont overlook private party sales, you can find honest people who will work with you on the car/truck they are selling, and you can feel out how the vehicle was maintained, and maybe get a full folder of receipts of maintenance done to it. if they seem shady, walk away, if they bring out the folder, show you everything done to it, and talk about yep this was done and that was done, and are honest enough to say "yeah, it was in a small fender bender, heres some pictures of the damage" will possibly be more then any carfax will show, i had car i hit a deer with, it never showed on its carfax when i traded it in and looked at the listing when the dealer sold it, but i knew the whole front bumper, bumper support, and rad/core support had been replaced, and the front headlight was expoxied together for a mounting tab. just my 2 cents worth of thoughts

All good thoughts but in my past experience, gap insurance was way more than $120. It was more like $500-$700. Once I lo learned that it protected the lender (and inflated loan) abd NOT the consumer I opted out of that in the finance office. I also don't pay for any ADDS from the dealer such as window tint, floor mats, pin striping, nitrogen in the tires, etc. etc. The same last car I bought was a new Honda. They had over $1000 in ADDS. I said that I would pass on those so they just drew a line through that. The finance office can be very creative with YOUR money:)

Another good piece of advice would be to invest in a reasonably priced OBD code reader before you go shopping for a used car. Don't rely on the check engine light or any other dash light to tell you if there's a problem because the first thing used car dealers do before the show any vehicle is deactivate those lights. Last year when I was looking for a new, used car, the first car I test drove was a 2014 Honda Civic. It looked sweet & drove sweeter. But when I plugged in my code reader to the OBD port, two fault codes appeared. One of them was for a gross EVAP leak, which was serious. The check engine light never turned on. Also, it's best to plug in the code reader after you've taken it for a test drive. That way, in case the dealer cleared the previous codes from the PCM, the drive may reactivate them.

I noticed this year, rather than charging over MSRP, some dealerships are selling you 2000 or $2500 paint and upholstery protection plan which you don’t find out about it till you get into the finance office. When you tell them that you’re not interested, they tell you that it’s mandatory that you purchase it or you cannot purchase the car

Our Ford sales manager was terminated over this. He had ripped the manufacture sticker off the more popular cars and told customers the selling price 3-5K above MSRP. He had a USED 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor listed at $79K when the original MSRP was $72K in 2019. The sales manager forgot that people can find the window sticker online and logged complaints to the general manager about the pricing of vehicles. Needless to say, we need a new sales manager now. One thing is for sure, our service department is real busy now. People have decided to hang on their vehicles and repair it instead of paying ridiculous prices.

On the East Coast, some dealers don’t rip off on sticker. They flat out ask for more money. ( they call it “dealer mark up”) The amount they ask can go from 3K to 30K , depends on model and nobody getting terminated over this... Main reason for price increase is dollar loosing value. It’s called inflation...

I have not been a fan of posting comments on the internet for personal reasons, but I have loved all of the videos from The Car Care Nut, and he and other KZfaqrs inspire me to purchase my first Toyota 4Runner 2021 TRD PRO in Lunar Rock at MSRP. Heck, I felt terrible when the dealer offered me $150 off MSRP! Plus, free floor mats and other goodies total $400 off MSRP! The moral is do your homework, and it may take you a few NO’s before you get a YES! I called 20+ dealers around me until I got one 6hrs away with all the goodies mention! Don't fall prey to these legal robberies over MSRP purchases.

I also saw a XSE model at another dealership and they added about $15K for mark-up which puts the car over $60K. The sad thing is that someone out there would probably fall for it and pay the premium price.

I took care of it planning to keep it for as long as it would carry me. Then someone ran a red light, couldn't stop cause of the rain, and crashed into me. First car. Only car in my life I'll be able to say grew in value when I drove it off the lot. Haha. It was a great car, sci-fi looking but simple and humble. It kept me safe. Thank God and thank you Toyota. I so admire you and this channel. Speaking of Gouging, I remember when the first Honda Fit came out, on the sticker they had listed ADM $10,000, I asked and the sales person said Additional Dealer Markup, I immediately walked. Never been back! When I complained to Honda, I was told “Dealers can do what they want” Oh really? I Don’t even THINK about Honda’s any more. I also won’t pay “Dealer Fees” which is nothing but fluff. I just bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla with 7,000 miles from CARVANA (WHO DOESN’T CHARGE DEALER FEES) got it for $21,050 + Tags,Title, State Tax. The best part it had 2 oil changes at 3,500, and 7,000 miles , I will continue using your 5000/6 months mantra. LOVE THIS CAR! We are getting 37 CITY/44 HWY in ECO mode. Thank you for this! Whether you're talking with a salesman about a new or used car, he or she will try to goose you into jumping for the first deal they offer--right now! They do this by creating a false sense of urgency. "Mr Banks, is there ANY way we can c)ose this sale tonight? The price may rise tomorrow. And if you don't commit to buying NOW another buyer can buy YOUR CAR right out from under you!" The 3 times in my life that I have bought brand new cars from dealers I did my research well ahead of meeting with car sales people and I made it impossible for them to guess what kind of car I really wanted, so they could not hammer away at one deal or another. In 1990 I looked at sedans and small cars and large cars and vans even though what I really wanted was a 1991 Ford crown Victoria wagon manufactured in Windsor Ontario. All the other customers were avoiding this car like the plague and it had been sitting in the dealership room long enough that the expense of floor planning it had gone way over what would usually have been allowed. So I bought the car for 1/3 less than the MSRP. And drove it in 90 pecent of the United States, as well as Canada and Mexico.

I’m a used car dealer myself. Around November 2020 I was shopping for a used Camry hybrid 2018-2019. They were selling well over $28k at Manheim and adesa auction. This is right before the shortage was starting to open up. I was convinced new car was the best route even as a person who sells used cars. I went to Toyota dealership and Picked up a new 2021 Camry xse hybrid for about $31k out the door. Benefitted off of a lot of manufacture rebates that don’t exist today. Msrp of my car was about $34k at the time.

Love the video! Let me share an analogy. Prescription medication has a MSRP…it is called AWP. You never pay sticker price for medicines. If you have insurance of any kind you are paying less than AWP (MSRP sticker price). You insurance company either bought by you or your employer negotiated discounts from small and large pharmacy chains. So, don’t buy a car if dealer is saying MSRP and for G*d sake above MSRP. Remember, all those fees added….those, too have to go away. BTW, I am a pharmacist and used to work in insurance industry…..and ran the drug benefit….

It is because $4 gas prices are still tolerable for them. If it spiked to something closer to what the rest of the world pays, in the $6-9 per gallon range, it would be just like the last gas spike. These people think in the short term, illogically, and with emotions instead of logic.

Absolutely!!! I was, and still am, in the market for a new Leaf or Corolla. I purchased two new cars in the past from a local Nissan dealership. A few days ago they got a new Leaf SV with an MSLP of just over $28,000. Trying to work out a deal, the best out the door price was just over $38,000. They said that the dealer added on a protection plan and wouldn’t remove it. I was furious. I couldn’t get too upset on the phone at the sales lady, because the pricing is not in her control, but, unfortunately, I couldn’t get to speak with the low life owners that set that policy, but if I was in the dealership, I would have yelled out to all the customers thinking of or trying to come to a deal to run out the door. I honestly hope when things pick up, those SOBs go out of business. By the way, that Leaf is still for sale. I wonder why. Some of these dealers are worse than the mob.

I've heard that even on basic Corollas, the dealers are charging $5,000 to $6,000 over MSRP. It's just crazy right now. I can understand why used cars that were selling for only $2,000 three years ago are now selling for $6,000; is it because it makes more sense to buy a 2008 Camry for $6,000 than to spend $10,000 over MSRP for a new Camry. In 4 years when the shortage of cars is over, you will be able to get a new Camry for MSRP, and by buying that used Camry, you just saved yourself $4,000 overall (10k - 6k), plus you've still got the used Camry that you can sell for $2,000.

THAT IS INSANITY! Damn, it's demand but also predatory. I got a Hybrid Corolla 2021 in April for $20k (I know, BELOW MSRP!). I feel like I won the lottery because they didn't seem to be in stock anywhere and I was texting the dealership and made them wait 2 days (they kept trying to get me to come in sooner and I made them wait a few days while comparing the cost each of the local dealers were offering me). When I did go - they had almost no cars in stock. It was insane. One of the other dealerships had a deal of $20550 and it sold immediately so I asked if they could beat that and throw in some extras to make commuting to them worthwhile (it was probably 15 mins further away than the other location...) The guy I was working with was super great at recognizing I wanted a millennial transaction (he is also one) and he didn't waste my time, was super straight forward, and it was a suspiciously great experience all around. That. Never. Happens. I had gone with my partner the week prior to get their car at Subaru and they tried to sell everything and anything. One of the Subaru forms switches the yes/no check boxes on one of the last forms and I thought that was such a dirty trick! I know I was lucky in my experience. The boss at Toyota even told me that he had employees parking their cars on the lot to make it look more full. It worked out. I get emails constantly offering to buy my car for more than I paid! The market is insane right now. If I didn't love it so much, I'd sell it back and wait it out!

I won't mention any dealerships, but they were just so "Greedy" they put "The Midas Touch" to shame. Since I'm in Tornado Alley, no Prime here, Brother. California, Florida, NY, and 4 other states, same story....Take a number! One dealership in Colorado had a Prime, told me $10000 over MSRP!!!! Seriously? Another in NJ, only $5000 over MSRP. Sales person told me he gave me a break. Luckily I found a dealership in Missouri, next door. The only one they had that just..just came in. Got that puppy and She is SWEEETTTTTTTT. Averaging...just on EV alone... 57EV per full charge. YA BABY!!!!! Anyways.. but you're right...I feel bad for people who has to have it "NOW" and pay way over the MSRP.. Some people aren't afforded the ability to be able to say no to the dealer mark up now. Example an uber driver that makes there sole living driving for a living, and their car gets stolen or wrecked has to have one now ! Or possibly become homeless.. Rental car's in my area are a 3 week wait ,maybe longer if you have a certain category of vehicle you need. Your advice is good because buying a vehicle at inflated prices, now everything goes up,taxes on purchase insurance vehicle registration .. If your forced to purchase a vehicle now make sure it's the make model color that you really want, because your going to be stuck with it for a long time

When you car is totaled your rental coverage is not for 30 days. Your insurance company may give you a couple of days or maybe a week after you get that check from them. The claim is closed when you get that check and they expect you to go and buy a vehicle ASAP with that money since they have made you “whole”. I have unfortunately run into this twice within a couple of years and had to argue with my insurance company to give me a few days as I could not find a used car inside the budget I had with the insurance money. I am in PA and not sure if this is consistent throughput the country or not since each has its own insurance department.

I went to several Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Subaru dealers before this purchase and ultimately what pushed me was that transmission on my 2016 Rogue was showing signs of damage. And under advice of a local mechanic I had to start the search. So overall I "saved" on selling a bad car and lost on buying a new one. My apologies to whoever the Rogue was subsequently sold to. The computer chip shortage is a complex issue. Just as it takes time to build a car... it can take 3 to 6 months to buils a chip, depending on complexity, and up to three years to build a new chip plant at a cost of $8 billion+ dollars. In addition, most suppliers are using just in time order management, so vendors don't have huge buffers. There is also a substrate shortage in the chip industry, so that limits how many chips can be made. Coupled that car mfgs are likely allocating what chips they have to high profit cars, the car supply is likely on high end models... thus the avg transaction price on a new car is over $45k.... which is crazy.
