I don't get why Alicent feels like Rhaenyra owed her the truth about her virtue when Alicent herself was seeing Viserys after his wife died for 6 months and she didn't tell Rhaenyra about that so I don't think she should expect the same from Rhaenyra. Alicent is upset that Rhaenyra got to choose who she slept with to where as Alicent didn't get to choose and Alicent feels like that's unfair.

Alicent didn’t do any of it willingly though. And she literally COULDNT tell Rhaenyra even if she wanted to. The king told her not to tell her and Otto clearly didn’t want that either; that’s the two most powerful men in the realm. She can’t go against that. So yes, she’s upset when Rhaenyra has no regard for how this world they’re in works and does only what she wants without thinking of consequence. I think another thing which helps understanding Alicent here is that she’s jealous. Not just jealous of Rhaenyra’s position and how she can choose, but jealous of Criston. In some way, it is clear that she loved Rhaenyra (and it’s even confirmed by the actors/showrunners/writers) and this felt like a total betrayal of that love and trust she put in her. Alicent foolishly believed her and defended her and all she got in return was betrayal and her father (even if he is a vile man and a bad father, he is still her only ‘family and support’ there) sent away.

Just some lil details I noticed and loved. 1. The red beads in Rhaenyra’s hair matching the red bead detailing on Daemon’s top. 2. The crabfeeder’s mask now being a part of Corlys’ hoard/collection of trophies and treasures. 3. During the messy part of the wedding party when Laenor was getting hurt the entire time Laena was doing what she could to get to her brother despite the potential danger to herself. Love their bond 🥺. 4. Harwin was already throwing his dad looks when things got messy. My mans was ready to get in there. And once he got the go ahead he literally just pushed like 4 grown adults out of his way like it was as easy as pushing aside air. And note for the first few seconds we see him being about as gentle as he can be pushing and shoving his way to get to the Princess, it’s only after she’s literally shoved into the side of the table and falls he starts throwing hands and is more or less DONE telling people to move NICELY.

Christian killed Joffrey because he has no self-control and possibly to ensure no one else would learn of his misdeeds. Many believe Rhaenyra lying was what instigates a feud but always forget Allicent lied about seducing her bestfriend’s father. I’m not sure if you missed it but Allicents wearing green was an informal declaration of war.
@roguechevelle
@roguechevelle Жыл бұрын
That is true with Alicent, it is a bit hypocritical yet human in a way she didn't think about Rhaenrya feeling betrayed and lied to with her meeting her father in secret tho it was something Otto pushed her into and not something she wanted for herself (not an excuse tho). Only that Rhanerya lied to her just when they were mending their friendship after years of Rhaenrya being angry with her. There is also a ting of jealousy I think, Alicent is someone who does things that are expected of her or that are proper tho she doesn't want those things while Rhanerya gets to choose who she loses her virginity to and suffer no consequences for her impropriety. Also the young actresses playing the roles purposely suggested that Alicent could feel more then just friendship for Rhaenrya, if you look at it from that view it adds another layer to her character if she is in love with Rhaenrya but is very repressed due to the times they live in and Alicent not wanting to be "improper" so she can never have Rhaenrya in her mind then it could be very upsetting to hear them carry on with someone else. Alicent could even be so repressed she's not even aware of her true feelings so that makes her very interesting as a character, more complex. I think they did such a great job making these characters multi-dimensional not just one note so you can see why some are like they are and even sympathize with them but also dislike their choices or what they do.
@beesmith5379
@beesmith5379 Жыл бұрын
@@roguechevelle Agreed. Both actresses indicated in an interview they were both playing the role as of they were lovers. Rhaenyra was the one not sepia while Allicent was in love. Many people don’t realize that when they watch it. I thought those were brilliant choices and I hope towards the end we get Allicent admitting her feelings even if she is in a room alone.

Just in case you didn’t hear it, the reason why Queen Alicent was wearing a green dress was a way for her to declare war on Rhaenyra. House Hightower’s war color is green since their beacon on the High Tower glows green when they summon their army to a war. Queen Alicent is also a couple steps ahead of Rhaenyra too because she has the her house’s armies standing with her and possibly a knight of the Kingsguard on her side as well. And the guy who has married Rhaenyra is named Laenor Velaryon(Lae-nor). His sister is Laena, the girl who flirted with Daemon and their mother is Princess Rhaenys(Cousin to King Viserys and the wife of Lord Corlys). And Otto is 100% right about there being a war once Rhaenyra ascends. Some people will not accept her as Queen because Viserys now has a son named Prince Aegon and some will choose him to be king rather than Rhaenyra because he’s the firstborn son and rightful heir in their eyes. And Otto is also right about Rhaenyra possibly killing Alicent’s children in order to have a peaceful ascension. One of the reasons why Alicent is now supporting her children’s claims is so she can protect them from Rhaenrya(although I personally don’t think she would do kill her half-siblings). I don’t think they would choose Daemon to be king because Aegon has a stronger claim than he does. A child of the King has a stronger claim to the throne than a sibling. And the guy who told Alicent of the moon tea is Larys Strong, the youngest son of Lord Lyonel Strong(Current Hand of the King)and younger brother of Ser Harwin Strong(the one who saved Rhaenyra at the wedding) Sorry if you guys think this is a mean comment that isn’t my intentions at all.

For real though. Viserys cause of death is officially going to be leprosy but honestly that’s only gonna be maybe 10% of the cause. The rest is absolutely going to be the stress induced by his own family. That aside though we really gotta talk about Ser Criston Cole. I’ve seen so many reactors bseem to think his words and reactions in this episode are coming from a place of being heartbroken in Rhaenyra rejecting his proposal and being pressed over her getting married & more or less knowing the most he can ever be is her secret lover. And I’m sure that plays a part in all this but I haven’t seen a lot of people discussing the matter of his PRIDE in all of this. It’s clear that Criston is not in a good place in this episode, I mean we see him more or less ready to commit seppuku till Alicent stops him. But really listen to what he says to Rhaenyra. He talks about having soiled his white cloak, how he’s broken his vows, how the only thing he seems to consider of worth about himself has been marred by his lapse in honor in breaking his vow of celibacy. The way he talks about it, it’s almost in the same tones you’ll hear zealots talk about themselves after they’ve sinned. And he’s so quick to tell on himself to Alicent, which-- SCREWING UP HIS VOWS THERE TELLING ON HIMSELF AND RHAENYRA IN THE PROCESS IS N O T PROTECTING HER, how easy just how he was acting at the wedding party made it for Joffrey to figure out that he’s who Rhaenyra’s paramour is, and then later in the godswood well…. That coupled with his arguably impossible proposal to Rhaenerya and his response when she rejects him. Sure it may be colored with shades of love but ultimately this man more than anything seems consumed by guilt of what he’s done and is trying to find a way out. Marrying Rhaenyra and running away with her? Didn’t work. Confessing to the crime to the queen? Didn’t work. We see him slowly but surely unravel until he gets to the point where the man is ready to end it himself… I’m not saying he doesn’t love Rhaenyra. But I’m not entirely sold on him being IN love with her. More than anything I think his actions in this episode were driven by guilt, pride, his own ego, and-- I feel even a lack of awareness of himself, others, just reality. No cap man was kinda acting selfish & self-centered with his proposal in the more you look at it the more I imagine it’s easier to see how it’s more about himself and how he feels and looks vs about THEM. Even his reaction to Rhaenyra more or less telling him her fiancé is ok with them remaining lovers like it’s an insult and hurtful to remain as they are to eachother. Rhaenyra clearing wasn’t trying to insult him, or hurt him, yet he acts like she did which in comparison to him asking her to throw away the throne and her family and her name???? It all together just comes off as extremely short sighted, self-centered, egotistical, and selfish. And even while he’s pitching his proposal-- watch his body language. He keeps pointing, gesturing to HIMSELF…….. He may have love for Rhae but personally my opinion is that his proposal had next to nothing to do with Love and giving the woman he loves an escape to a happier life and everything to do with giving himself an OUT of the choices he regrets.
@tabea9254
@tabea9254 Жыл бұрын
completely agree, he exposes himself during his proposal to run away that he is not proposing it out of love but to rescue himself from his own bad choices. Leanor's lover, who genuinely seemed to love him, was happy to continue their relationship in secret. Criston however was too prideful and careless. Because he admitted to Alicent what happened, somebody uninvolved was now aware and thus he could never continue a secret relationship with rhaenyra, even if he had been genuinely in love and wanted to do so after all. He ruined it all for himself, first by sleeping with her and then by opening up to Alicent, and if he couldn't have happiness then Leanor's lover shouldn't either in his mind so he killed him in a rage of anger at himself.

@@thoroughlyrustled6186 only if he told on himself and by extension her. I get where you’re coming from but Rhaenyra actually isn’t to blame for Criston’s choices. He’s a grown man. A knight of the kingsguard. More than capable of having physically removed himself from the situation if he truly wanted no part in it and without harming Rhaenyra in the process. You can make the argument that there was an imbalance of power with her being a princess and the heir apparent to the throne and more or less his BOSS. But-- context. It isn’t nearly that cut and dry. This is a relationship that is based in business with him being her sworn knight yes but it’s made clear a few times that there is a genuine fondness for eachother that goes beyond the bonds of duty. Criston was never in danger of being fired or being ‘in trouble’ with Rhaenyra had he simply walked away. Things may have been awkward in the aftermath but in my opinion I do believe that later on they’d have talked it over and through and probably laughed about it after some apologies and things might’ve gone on as they had and their friendship or whatever term you want to give their relationship before strengthened by the incident. Instead when Criston has more than a few moments to simply walk away he lets her draw him further into the room, doesn’t stop her from removing his armor and ultimately CHOOSES to remove his own cloak and return her physical affections. Further into the scene we clearly see them smiling and laughing together. Man doesn’t look like he’s been forced or compromised to me. Should Rhaenyra have opened the door to the events that unfolded? Absolutely not. No. Bad girl. Bad horny TEENAGER (she’s like 18/19 in that Ep so legally an adult but still in her TEENS). She shouldn’t have. She started it. But Criston is a GROWN MAN and his literal job is to protect the Princess. I would think that would likely include making stupid decisions when she’s feeling sorts of ways or at the very least not involving himself in them when she makes them. Rhaenyra may have started it, but it was his job to end it before anything actually happened. Physically he was capable, morally he should have. He didn’t. Rhaenyra is 💯 responsible for the choices she makes. As Criston Cole is of his own. Whatever his reasons for letting himself be seduced, they were his own, and it was a choice he made, one that Rhaenyra had no control over. No one ever said Rhaenyra wasn’t selfish. I’m just not a fan of people who act like she’s solely responsible for how things turned out for Criston.

At his core, Daemon sees himself as Valerian; he wants to ride dragons, conquer lands, marry a white-haired bride of pure Valerian blood (*cough* like Viserys had *cough*), make white-haired dragon-riding children, and restore the power and pride of the Valerian empire. No matter how beautiful or spunky or highborn Lady Rhea was, she would never have been enough for him.

The ending montage was my favorite scene up to this point. Give me the red hue of the weirdwood tree glowing in twilight, give me the dim lights, give me the gloomy ambience of a GoT wedding with an equally gloomy Ramin Djawadi soundtrack & hook it to my veins! That pause when Criston looks up & you hear the final note of that haunting tune? So well done! The uncharacteristically heartfelt exchange between Otto and Alicent was the most significant moment so far. It's the Tywin Jaime "we can establish a dynasty that last a thousand years" scene. We Light the Way is the motto of House Hightower. This is the episode the Greens come into their own. Out of this cursed wedding the ties that bind are lost and found forever. Rhaenyra and Laenor were exchanging wedding vows, but it was Alicent and Criston who were getting “married”.

Not Spoiler: If you can remember, The Citadel or the place where Maesters train is in Old Town the home of House Hightower. So there's this theory originating from the books that Otto is plotting with the Maesters of the Red Keep to slowly kill King Viserys through poison. Edit: If you missed the conversation between Larys & Harwin Strong during Alicent's entrance, Larys told Harwin "what's the color of the beacon of Old Town when they call it's bannermen to war?" (not the exact wording) to which Harwin replied "Green" indicating that Alicent's declaring war against Rhaenyra by wearing a Green dress at her wedding. And it should be noted that most of the time if not all that we saw Alicent after her & Viserys' wedding she was always wearing red/black since she's now a Targaryen by name.

That's a silly theory... why would Otto start to poison the king from the first episodes?? That's so risky, if the king dies while Aegon is still too young Rhaenyra has all the power to do whatever she wants. Also, the king is not that sick in the books, he's just lazy and fat. Anyway, Condal has confirmed, Visaerys has leprosy, that's why the cuts don't heal and they keep chopping up pieces of him.

Ser Criston just wanted Rhaenyra to fun off with him because he feels guilty about breaking his vows. If Rhaenyra ran off with him her father would send spy's to look for them plus how is Rhaenyra going to hide her dragon, her dragon will follow her. I love the character Alicent. Many consider her a witch and call her the second Cersei, but this is not at all the case. She was on the side of Rhaenyra to the last, she was against violence even years later. Her father wanted the throne, but not her. It's a shame that the writers decided to cast the black faction as the goodies, even though things were a lot more complicated in the books. For example, Rhaenyra was also known as 'Maegor with Tits' for her cruelty actions. But if the screenwriters artificially made her good, then how will they subsequently write down the hatred of the people for her? I really hope we don't see Game of Thrones 2.0. where from the "positive" Daenerys the writers made a tyrant in one series. It would be meaningless and stupid.

Fun fact: Daemon killing Rhea Royce is actually a change from the source material. In the books he was nowhere near the Vale when she was actually thrown from her horse in front of witnesses during a hunt, afterwards she lingered in a coma for seven days and woke up one morning saying she felt fine. She died that afternoon. It was an interesting choice to make Daemon her killer in the show, show off his "rogue prince" credentials even more. And to answer your question, why doesn't he like her? Because she's a nobody. The Royce's are an old Vale house but aren't very important in the grander scheme, Daemon was married to Rhea at a time when there were many more Targaryens (the king at the time had 9 children, several of whom had several grandchildren each) and they had to look at more options than just the great houses to have enough potential suitors for their children. But Rhea doesn't bring anything to the table that Daemon cares about, which is power. He didn't get anything out of being married to her.

She could've trusted her to keep her and her children safe but now? Now she has to consider that her "best friend" may do the most politically expedient thing and have any threats to her claim to the throne (her son) dealt with. By thinking Criston is Rhaenyra's paramour, as in side piece, Joffrey thought Criston was "just like them", as in more open minded to these sort of sexual liberties. Joffrey didn't know Criston walked away the moment he realized Rhaenyra had no intention to marry him. Criston was literally asking for a death sentence for his trangression. He's too honorable. He's like a psychotic Ned Stark. Therefore when Joffrey approached him saying "we know about your little secret", Criston took Joffrey's politicking as a direct threat to his honor and his white cloak. If he was willing to die himself, what is he gonna do to someone else? The key here is to remember that Cole is a knight from the middle ages. His conception of morals and honor are not like ours. Interesting thing to note, in the first episode they made a point of saying that Rhaenyra smelled like Dragon after riding Syrax. Daemon most likely travelled to the Vale on dragonback, which is a much longer distance, and unless he stopped to bathe, he would reek of dragon, so when he reached out his hand, the horse smelled dragon and reacted as any animal would to the scent of a large predator. Which is why it bucked and tumbled taking Rhea with it.

Other explanation about why Daemon doesn't like Rhea- she was (in the book at least) something around 25 when he was 15/16, and he was literally dragged into the Sept to marry her because they were trying to get rid of him. Add to that the fact they never got along, and he's tried to have the marriage annulled over and over given they never consummated and... yeah I'd hate her too XD Even if it's not her specifically, it's hard not to hate someone you're irrevocably tied to with only the one way out, especially if you don't get along!

This was a way more impactful inciting incident than another repetitive jousting death woulda been. It’s quite logical that Criston slipped away in all the shock & chaos before anyone got to their senses, afterwards coming under the Queen's protection. No matter how unprecedented the beatdown was, the King still has final say over his Kingsguard & no one, including Velaryons, can do anything about it. Lack of precedence doesn't automatically mean illogical. Exec producer Martin clearly didn't feel so. Next ep they make a point of showing how much power the queen has amassed, alongside Viserys' detoriating health, his eagerness to be an appeaser & his leniency towards the City Watch Captain's transgression. So it's very logical to assume a weak & sickly King caved on the matter of Cole. They don't need to spell out an on the nose scene with the King telling the Queen "you're the reason I let him live!!" when they're showing you the power dynamic. Show, not tell. Criston's breakdown followed a logical path for a prideful medieval knight who takes his honor & vows as seriously as his chastity (soiled knight symbolism). Even better was the Queen's rage buildup with Otto's wise words, Larys' instigation about the tea & Cole's confession letting her know who was responsible for her dad's banishment. Daemon serving as a wedding red herring was great. And ofc they would hurriedly get the marriage done after what happened (cursed wedding symbolism). The suspense building all thru the wedding climaxing with the visual storytelling & the score of the Princess & the Queen's crossroads moment...best thing yet! Themes & symbolism should always be prioritized over dry freefolk-brain logistical pedantry.

Kacee: "The real question is why don't you like her?" Because Daemon doesn't like dominant women. He shrivels up at the thought.
