New Akribis Nail Bags

I decided to spoil myself and order a set of new nail bags. I had a nicely broken in set of Occidental Leather Pro Framer bags that were stolen about 10 years ago. I didn’t have a bunch of spare cash then, so I replaced them with a decent set of Craftsmen leather bags. They were meant as a stop-gap and I tweaked them a little here and there to fit my needs. I was planning on buying a new set of Occidentals, but I used someone else’s rig that had a diagonal hammer and cat’s paw sheath and was blown away by how much I preferred that set up! I have been eye-balling a set of custom modular Akribis Leather nail bags with the diagonal hammer sheath and some other cool features for about a year and finally was able to hit their once a month online store opening.
They came via USPS about 2 weeks after I ordered them and THAT DAY I was swapping out my tools from my old bags (they will go to my son, full of brand new tools, who will get years of use out of them). I used them for the first time 3 days later to build a scaffold/brace for a project at the house. They fit PERFECTLY.
I am really happy with this purchase and the product/communication/customer service at Akribis leather. They are not cheap and the Occidentals are just as solid AND US Made. It was a hard choice, but it was the diagonal hammer sheath that finally sold me.

Some time I miss it. I don't miss walking top plates, but I loved setting walls and doing the rafter cuts. Getting a house officially in the Dry was a fine day!

I might try the hammer at the back and see how that goes. I like the old est wings over the new titanium hammers personally

I never knew about those Japanese nail sets...!! Ought to be much more helpful when hand driving nails that the TecoNailer can't get to when installing hangers.

God bless you sir. I remember and still have and use many of the carpentry tools my pop gave me over 50 years ago. They have made me a lot of money and i lov and appreciate them every day and I am sure your son will also. Best luck and again bless you sir.

I am after a setup with side angled hammer holder. How do you like the hammer there?

I REALLY like it! It doesn't smack my knees. Made for a framing hammer, but will work with a curved claw as well.

So much better than a regular trim nail set. Gets in spots better and is super useful

Honest question: why are you so sold into the Martinez hammer and square? I’ve been building, remodeling and renovating homes for 18 years and never needed either. What’s the appeal that justifies spending more on a hammer and square than on most of the other tools needed to be in the trade?

I am not. As you can see from my own rig, I use Estwing hammers and a Swanson square. Martinez in the new "hotness" with the younger crowd in the trades. I would rather have a quality tool at a fair price, and have made that function/style discussion a part of this video and others. Some of the younger carpenters I know, follow trends on Social Media and what ever the guys at Awesome Framers or RR Builders are swinging, they have to have. Sort of like Air Jordans back in the day. The Martinez stuff is good, but it doesn't make you a better carpenter. They are almost a fashion statement. A badge of sorts. My $0.02 worth.

This one is from Lee Valley. www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/hand-tools/punches/40379-japanese-nail-set?item=44K1301&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI34KSu-nT-QIVWj-tBh2DiQxREAQYASABEgJgIPD_BwE I got my original in Japan, but the Lee Vally sourced one is exactly the same.

I need to do a video for them being used. The bags and belt have held up to rain and more rain, framing, finish, and electrical rough-in duty. Couple of little quirks: the drill hook gets in the way of the hammer loop a little. the diagonal right-side hammer loop is great for a framer, but a claw hammer flops a bit. It took a month+ to break in, but I like it better than my old Occidental Leather rig and that is saying something!

I am 5'8" or 172.72cm. They are large Framing bags. I like his smaller version as well
