I feel like Joker's wish was not only for Akechi to come back but for them to also see eye to eye. To be equals and not have to fight each other. When Joker accepts this reality if Akechi knew about this being Maruki's reality he probably wouldn't fight against it because Maruki made Akechi agree with Joker.

Xoriatis71 I heavily disagree. It goes against the initial premise where Akira is just riding out his probation. He belongs back with his parents at the end of the story. Akira staying at Leblanc is wrong, and that’s why Atlus included it in the BAD ending.

@whyohwhy1221
@whyohwhy1221 4 жыл бұрын
Mr Heisenbird The point is a lot of things change in a year. Akira stayed in Tokyo for a YEAR and his parents never contacted him ONCE. Who would want to go back to such dismal and dismissive parents? But, the true ending sort of reflects how we cannot get everything we want out of life. Futaba does not have her mother, President Okamura remains deceased, Akechi’s fate is ambiguous, and Akira has to go back home. They are all splitting up and going their separate ways because that’s how life is. However, they will always be connected like Akira said. You always continue to move on no matter how bittersweet your future may seem. Akira staying at Leblanc is not WRONG but it is the EASY WAY OUT. But the game has never been about taking the easy way out. If you go with Maruki’s reality, that just makes personal growth the characters have throughout out the game meaningless because, well, they never happened in the first place. It would be a hollow, empty ending where akira took the easy way out and the Protagonist could not stand for it. The Protagonist always sticks with his sense of justice, no matter what consequences his justice may bring him.

Sumire killed herself, Since even before the game she decided to remove herself from reality. The end pic kind of heavily implies that Akechi and Akira/Ren(the min protag) are both aware that it's fake if not they know full well on that it's just a cognition heck the Thieves Den basically confirms this as the pic's description points out how both Joker/Akira/Ren and Akechi are looking somewhere being at the camera so yeah it's basically ten asking the player are they really happy with this?

aaaaagh it hurts how perfect this ending feels despite being the wrong one. it really shows how good of a villain maruki is. because not only is it not entirely obvious at first sight that his actions are somewhat evil, seeing it in action makes it even harder to go against such actions since the whole crew feels happy with no issues for once.
@gywghhb
@gywghhb 4 жыл бұрын
Hazalski maruki’s action isn’t inherently evil, but it’s not exactly the most correct one either. He is the third option, escapism. It’s all right to escape from time to time, but just because you can escape from your problem doesn’t mean it isn’t there. And that is what the protagonists have to choose from, to either face their problems head on, or to abandon all their previous efforts and accept a simpler result.

This ending cuts deep.... Knowing it's all fake and they are ruled under some villain with a truly good intention... But they're all happy! They have their dreamworlds,their dream lives that were just miles away from them in this reality... All they had to do is forget that there's a real world that isn't so easy and lay back like this one. Atlus really made this ending cut deep to both the player and Joker,we could end their dream and continue on our justice! While tearing up this dream and practically setting it ablaze... But it will get a hold of most players who generally want to see this truly happy ending for the cast and know it isn't their reality anymore... It must hurt for Joker to rip them from their paradise and let them know that this isn't real. I both want them to be happy but I also don't want them living a fake life made up.

I know,some of you guys may disagree with not giving them this reality but... Where's the struggle we face daily in our lives? Where's that thing which pushes you further!? Where's that enjoyment of winning but not through means of challenges along the way that test our will!? Real life is fucked up but that's life and you want to live in a fake reality so you can have it easy!? They're the Phantom thieves! People were outcasts among society and being put down by some rotten adults that reflects what happens in real life! They faced their hardships together so why not the hard truth of this reality isn't real as well!

I actually agree, not so much that life should be filled with hardship, but the fact the Phantom thieves have already chosen to take a harder path than the average man. In a way it's almost like a game, or a story, except in this case the disconnect with reality is infinitesimally smaller, as if a dream. It's so much more sombre than all the other endings.

Perhaps this is the “bad” ending and Maruki is a “villain”, but know that most people would say yes in a heartbeat if given this opportunity in real life. We say we wouldn’t do it in the comment section because the story goes out of its way to tell us that’s wrong, but is it really wrong to tell an unfair world to get bent? If you’ve played the SMT games, you probably know what I’m talking about. But wanna know why it says END instead of FIN? Because it’s the end of Persona, which implies there’s no chance for Nyx or Izanami or Yaldabaoth or Nyarlathotep to screw with humanity because humans are universally happy in Maruki’s new world. tbh with your first half of the comment idk if i personally could. maybe i'd be a hypocrite for saying it, but the humility i've gained from my own horrific experience was enough to change me to the core and from it i know i gained so many amazing people. if having to choose one or the other i would personally choose to grow with that experience, even if i wasn't a direct victim. i might decide on it if i knew everyone was comfortable with what they had no matter what. but to say i would agree on it for my own sake IS something i could say i would hesitate on.

I can understand where you're coming from, believe me I do but at the same time a world without conflict would just be constant stasis. Good can not exist without evil and likewise it's impossible to feel happiness without knowing sorrow. Of course it's easier to say that without having to actually make the call but personally I think it's obvious what's the "right" decision is. Basically what I'm getting at is that happiness that you're brainwashed into isn't real. It's no different from a cult.

@@Jotunn96 Well, happiness is just dopamine being released into your brain. Sorrow/sadness is just another chemical reaction. We can absolutely have one without the other. We can be normal, regular without feeling much (not sad or full of sorrow. Just everyday average normalcy) or happy, in the case of Maruki's reality. A life without struggle? Fuck yeah, a world where money is never an issue, zero crime, zero unnatural deaths, no diseases, no wars, no political corruption, real state is secure for everyone, etc. I mean, fuck, that sounds like a nice world to live in. The only real issue would be Maruki doing a total 180 and turning into a ruthless dictator, which is highly possible, but take that out of the equation and it's a pretty sweet deal

One thing this ending does highlight is a common theme within Modern Persona games. They all have messages about facing things in your life in order to live a fulfilling, true existence. In Persona 3 it was death, which one needed to come to terms with so that they could find meaning in life. Living a life filled with friends, and family doing good deeds, and fighting for more than yourself. In Persona 4 it was the truth, the good and the bad. You needed to acknowledge your deepest flaws and insecurities in order to change to become a better person. You couldn’t bury them. In normal Persona 5, it was the status quo. You needed to face the underlying issues with the status quo if you wanted it to change. That could be scary or difficult, but you needed to do it anyway. As for Royal, it would be facing suffering that you have little control over in life. You can’t run from it, or try to bury it. One must accept it, and see if they can learn from the suffering

You know what’s an interesting detail I noticed? Maruki actualises his reality so quickly that he doesn’t actually *need* to have joker accept it, but because joker was such a big help in his work and because Maruki respects him, he’s willing to risk it all to prove a point to joker.

Yeah, the “bad” endings make it clear that if Maruki wanted, he can force it on whoever he wants. He wants to respect what he believes is people’s autonomy so much to the point that he allows the thieves to attempt to change him.

Not quite, he clearly can't influence people that does not open their heart to him. For example, when he first discover his Persona, he does not instantly uses it to brainwash the guy who refused to review his research. So in order to brainwash Joker, he either: -Need to gain his approval --> Fake Ending -Need to finally tighten his grip on reality, ie when the deadline is reached --> Depressed Ending Also it only seems quick because we are seeing it through Joker's eye, which perception have been altered by the brainwashing

@@Snipfragueur No one in the party “opened their hearts” to him. They all only ever saw him once, most were not enthusiastic about it, and iirc Ryuji or someone struggles to remember who he even is. Not to mention, it’s clear it’s against everyone’s ideals to follow his reality, that’s the reason they fight him. They were forced. Also, we SEE how his power works, with the tendrils in mementos and when he snares Cendrillion. The actual way in which it works can also be forced. He doesn’t brainwash the guy because that would be extremely out of character for him. If you need further proof; the fact that Akechi is in the alternate ending at all suggests he can be forced to accept it despite his STRONG aversion to do so. Maruki’s dialogue also implies he absolutely could force it on Joker, he simply doesn’t want to.

@@finleymorris04 Most were not enthusiastic about meeting Maruki at first, but they all end up speaking with him more freely once he gets the conversation rolling. He clearly gets them to accept them the reality, which is why they all individually apologize to Joker when he manage to take them back. That's probably why the game twist itself to make him meet people he is not supposed to, like Yusuke or Futaba. The tendrils only appears in the memento, in his Palace and in the bad ending where you miss the deadline and he completely takes control of reality, so it seems pretty safe to assume that he could only use those in the spirit world as it's a direct manifestation of his Persona.
@Snipfragueur

@@finleymorris04 He forcibly brainwash AN ENTIRE SOCIETY, and even does it to the MC in the bad ending the moment he is strong enough to do so, so no it would not be out of character at all. I'd argue it would be more out of character for him to not press the instant-win-brainwashing button once Joker refuses him for the third time and he is about to completely destroy everything he worked for when his policy is minimizing risks and taking charge for everything. In the alternate ending Akechi gets brainwashed because Maruki is not stopped and takes control of reality. It's not even clear whether or not it is the "real" Akechi in the alternate ending, or if it is just a manifestation (like Futaba manifest her mother).

It's a fantastic composition of both major and minor tonality to reflect the gray nature of marukis and the players choice. That solo at the end is very pink Floyd too. I used to think that marukis theme while councilling was great, but after seeing this and truly understand it's significance, I can't ever hear it the same way again. Similar to how we are removed from the illusion of marukis perfect and world and are the only ones who see the truth behind the veil.

I don't know if it's just me, but I've noticed that a lot of people just see the themes and the message of Royal as "the world is unfair and cruel, you have to accept it." But there's more to that. Yes, the world is indeed unfair and cruel, but the rest of the message would be "...But you have to also accept change, growth, take your future." Life is always going to be harsh and cruel, but just wishing to erase every wrong in the world just so you can be happy? That's not the best thing to do. It goes against the nature of humans, whether it is philosophical and spiritual nature or physical and material nature.

Honestly, of all the endings in Persona 5 and Royal, I'd have to say this ending is just... So wrong. In this one, the protagonist is aware of what they chose. Just choosing to say yes to any offers Maruki says means you'd kill off Sumire and make her turn to Kasumi, and you'd end up just... Erasing all the progress you made. This meant distorting everyone's views to make things into the 'ideal' reality that you and everyone wanted, but... Honestly? I think the player wouldn't want that. Also, Akechi was there so he must've been aware at the end. Judging from the photo, he might've been aware based on how he was looking at the screen. It's like he's showing a sign that basically says, “You chose the wrong ending” or even “This isn't right.” Nevertheless, I think this is really interesting and a surprising turn of events for a bad ending. You have outdone yourself, ATLAS. (btw!! An unpopular opinion of mine on "Kasumi" Yoshizawa (the one Sumire was pretending to be when her older sister had originally died)? I really don't like her from the get-go. Sorry, but... I don't get as to how others liked her in a sense- I prefer Sumire better; also I wish they could've changed her persona outfit to something that doesn't... Resolve with being a copy of Joker's. Again, just an unpopular opinion.)

I honestly prefer Sumrie over Kasumi too though I do like Kasumi. I felt the same way about this ending equally as much as you do and I totally agree with your perspective. Even though this distorts reality is making everyone happy, it's not the reality that the phantom thief work so hard to correct. They don't a distorted word to be happy bit accepted reality the way they are and find their own happiness. Man I'm getting some Sonic and the black knight vibe from this because I'm getting the exact meaning from this idea of accepting the word the way it is and live your life to the fullest. Enjoy the life you have even when life goes for the worst. I could be overthinking this but that's the meaning I'm understanding from this.

This ending is so harrowing because if I were given a decision like that, I’d probably end up accepting. That being said, Sumire being condemned to live forever as Kasumi is sickening. If Maruki could just revert Kasumi’s death, it’d be easier. There’s also the implication that Maruki either forces it on Akechi or Akechi is beaten into submission immediately after you agree.
@countjoelcula

Oof yea true. My headcanon is that due to Akechi's wish to decide his own path being incompatible with Maruki's plan, the good doctor decided to instead fulfill Akechi's second-greatest desire; namely for him to have befriended Joker and co. a few years earlier, thus preventing him from going down the dark path of being Shido's hitman. Though judging by his demeanour in the false ending, I'm assuming Maruki also rewrote reality so that much like with the other Thieves, Akechi never experienced the trauma that made him as ruthless as he was; thus his polite demeanour is genuine instead of an act.
@finleymorris04
@finleymorris04 Жыл бұрын
@@countjoelcula I agree, but I think both wishes go together. Akechi wants his own path, and the path he wanted was to be friends. Also about Akechi missing the trauma; this highlights another aspect about what makes the deal so tempting that a lot of people that would reject it miss. People reject it because the change of personalities or relationships is “fake” and overwriting the “real” experiences, however in Maruki’s reality that is either simply false or entirely irrelevant depending on how you see it. Those realities/histories being overwritten would make Maruki’s reality just as authentic, and regardless the characters would never know it. But still, the ending images hammer home that Sumire is completely destroyed and the idea of Kasumi is distorted, and that’s a different issue to altering someone’s personality by altering their history. This wouldn’t be an issue if Maruki just brought Kasumi back and allowed them to fix the problems in their relationship.

I honestly love endings like this because it really opens your mind to the hypothetical question. "Would I be happy living in this kind of reality?" Me personally, I think I could never really accept it. I'm the kind of person that starts to suspect foul play if things go too well, which then leads me to look into matters. If I find out something wasn't of my own merit I feel cheated out of the sense of accomplishment with my actions and beliefs, I challenge myself because I wish to grow from the pain I endure. However if it is a reality that everyone around me accepts then I'd would most likely see myself out through a way that I disagree with on a moral and belief principle. This whole fake reality really does drive the feeling of wrong you get when you know something is going too well. But I can see how some would want such a reality as this, despite my disagreement with it. Though who knows if you've never realized the reality was fake you would be happy... But that just seems wrong to me.

chose a painful truth were you will be hurt, and lose things over reasons outside your control, or live a lie in paradise, where everyone you know is happy, and everyone you love is there for you. if we were given this choice in the real world, i wouldn't be surprised if half the planet would want to live a lie, some people are hurting so much they just want peace, they ache for a happy end, others would refuse, maybe they're behind such wishes and want to move on. i don't know what i would've picked, i believe that one must be hurt and suffer to learn and grow, on the other hand, i'm sick and tired about everything that's going on in the world and just want to live in peace.

Eh, I know I’d choose the lie.I get the whole point of these games is that "Even if life is hard, you must face it and push on.", but the only justification we can really give to living a painful truth being the "best" option is because it’s "right", and living a lie is "wrong". If you can alleviate suffering for not just a few people, but everyone in the world, is it wrong to do so? People justify telling white lies to children to make them happy, so what’s so different about helping everyone, old OR young, be happy? That’s how I view the matter, anyway. If people disagree with me, so be it. We all want to live our own ways. Like I said, there’s no objective "right" way or "wrong" way.

Pokéfan 744 I respect your opinion but you have to understand that it’s not about living a world of lies. It’s not right for Maruki to impose his will onto everybody else just because he thinks it’s right. Everyone’s happiness cannot be satisfied so what should Maruki do if two peoples desires conflict with each other? Does Maruki have the right to judge who’s happiness is more deserving? Maruki in this ending plays god and although he has good intentions he cannot objectively decide who’s desire is more important. Like for example if my desire is to be an MVP in volleyball but someone else also desires the same thing, who gets to be mvp if neither of us can decide based on our own skill? If Maruki picks me to be the mvp it’s unfair for the other person because he was robbed of his opportunity to fight for the mvp spot while I was given the title because Maruki thought I deserved it more. It’s very wrong.

I melted when I saw that picture of Futaba in uniform, and Akechi and joker playing chess together. I love this ending so much but obviously it doesn’t feel right. It would feel like a badly written ending if a persona game finished with “everyone is happy and they lived happily ever after”, I love the true ending because it’s hopeful, happy and grateful. This ending doesn’t have that emotion. as what was intended, the emotions in the true ending feel real where as this ending it feels fake. But I can’t figure out if Akechi and joker do remember everything, or do they know that something isn’t right? Like did joker walk away from maruki after the picture, as the game saying he accepted that reality and that’s him truely embracing it. Or is joker just like, wait I feel like I know that stranger somehow. Like the more I think about it, the more that ending is scary. If Akechi and Joker also lost their memories, and living their dreams not realising it’s fake, then everyone in that reality has their thoughts manipulated by maruki every second. Their thoughts and actions made so they won’t cause pain to anyone or themselves. No one is themselves anymore, their conscious and subconscious is controlled by Maruki. They are all puppets, as if they were a shadow version of themselves from someone else’s cognition... 🤭

The two endings are pretty much this: You forsake the values of the Phantom Thieves in pursuit for a better life instead entrusting that Takuto will hold up his end of the bargain and give such a reality for you which he actually ends up doing. You and your entire group get what they want and live their lives happily alongside those who have died being brought back to life and judging from Takuto's attitude at the end it's likely he just goes on to use reality manipulation for aiding others or just quits entirely on that end...However then the bad is that Sumire is completely dead as much as she wanted to be even prior to the game even introducing her alongside you forsake your ideals as a Phantom Thief and the weight of your actions prior are completely tossed away for this ending...Are you willing to sacrifice your Journey for the best ending possible? I am, Maybe you aren't, That's perfectly fine as both options are viable although one is only Canon! You stick with the values of the Phantom Thieves and forsake the reality manipulation that Takuto is trying to do to give the thieves a better life and go on his way and then stop him and force him to give up, With that anyone you could have saved is now permanently dead (Minus Morgana since he didn't die and Akechi in the True Ending where it's revealed that he actually did live the Shido Encounter due to your actions although purposefully vague) and the wants that everyone wished for will not be reality but this also means that you haven't forsaken your ideals as a Phantom Thief (Ignore the one mementos mission where you do and this entire Third Semester for that point!), Your actions up to that point actually mattered and had weight throughout as you kept your ideals, Sumire will live on and the power of Mementos is no longer going to be abused...Right? No, Scramble exists and is a Sequel to this game so yeaaaaahhhhhh...The Real/True Ending is a happy ending at a big cost but one that must be took if you decide to stick to your Phantom Thief Ideals and want your Journey to have carried purpose or if you simply just want to safeguard Mementos from people who would abuse it no matter who they may be even if that ideal is a completely fruitless goal. Are you willing to sacrifice a chance at the best life possible for the characters you are with for the Ideology of the Phantom Thieves? I'm not, Maybe you are, That's perfectly fine as both options are viable although one is only Canon!

Doesnt this also mean the efforts of the Thieves become meaningless? Like... Kamoshida never committed anything to begin with, which means they never came together for the reasons they did.

The details are awkward and muddled, but it does make sense Especially in the case of Yusuke and Morgana (one goes to a school separate from the rest of the group and Morgana came from the metaverse). As a result it sorta feels like the group all know each each but nobody knows why (or just don't bother thinking about) how they all met in the first place.

@@OriginalGameteer Akechi said that Phantom Thieves actions happen in this universe. So it's likely that Kamoshida and Kaneshiro got their hearts changed and are in jail alongside Shido. Not sure if anyone noticed but the credit song almost sounds similar to futaba's place theme song. That guitar solo. It still creates this happy and sad melody. I guess that's what this ending is Joker seeing everyone is happy but knows it's just a dream, an alternate reality. Crazy stuff.

Really? I don't hear it all that much tbh. All I hear is a slower, more orchestrated version of "Ideal and the Real" aka the song that plays during Maruki's councling. But also, allow me to disagree on the last notion. It's not a dream and not an alternate reality. By accepting the actualisation it has become the sole reality. And besides, calling it a dream would imply you could wake up.

The bad ending doesn’t feel like the bad ending at all, Maruki all he wanted is to make everyone stop suffering and make them happy he really isn’t a bad guy like most villains all he wanted is everyone to be happy because he lose everything but still held on together to make his dream a reality even tho we punch him over and over during the good ending progression

It is indeed a bad ending to the fullest degree. In fact it's possibly the worst ending. Not only is the whole game meaningless because everything you did is erased, but the bonds you built with people are erased or altered so everyone can have their "ideal" happiness. It's a fake. To accept this reality it to cast away your humanity and life. Trauma and pain are as much apart of humanity as death. They define us and build us into who we are. In this ending the characters lives end. Nothing about their situation will change. They will continue to live out this false reality for an enternity.

The part that always throws off this ending for me is Ren in the last picture. He isn’t smiling, like, at *all* . He isn’t happy with this. If he doesn’t remember outright, he knows something is wrong here. Everyone else is happy, but at what cost? They’ve lost all the growth they put effort into and are essentially being forced to deny what made them who they are in the real world. A good example? Morgana. He was never human in the first place. He was a construct created by Igor as the embodiment of humanity’s hope. His whole arc was learning to be secure in himself and his identity as not human. Now? He’s human, sure, but he’s lost all the development that made him who he is. Is he even still Humanity’s hope? Is it distorted now that he is? It essentially boils down to: should you take the easy route and gain what you wanted without having to struggle or should you take the difficult path that lets you learn how to handle hardships and be comfortable with yourself and knit tight personal bonds?

Come little children, I'll take thee away, Into a land of enchantment. Come little children, the time's come to play, Here in my garden of magic. I still remember it like it was yesterday, though it was countless months ago. After he was defeated, not much of our once beautiful city was left. And the ten brave ones that stood up for us all disappeared from public eye. One day, one man, saddened by our daily struggles, proposed to form a new world where all of us would grow strong and happy. But the elders forbade it, for they felt that would divide and shatter the weakened society forever. Nobody knows that we are still here, smiling beneath the sky while remembering our dear father, for we will forever be... his children of the dream. Come, little children, I'll take thee away Into a land of enchantment Come, little children, the time's come to play Here in my garden of shadows Follow, sweet children, I'll show thee the way Through all the pain and the sorrows Weep not, poor children, for life is this way Murdering beauty and passions Hush now, dear children, it must be this way Too weary of life and deceptions Rest now, my children, for soon we'll away Into the calm and the quiet Come, little children, I'll take thee away Into a land of enchantment Come, little children, the time's come to play Here in my garden of shadows

To be honest, I like this ending. Everyone is happy, even if it is not a real reality. In fact, our friends just lost their memories, but they are the still as they were. Well, except for Mona of course and maaaybe Akechi. Although given the last frame, it seems in the end Akechi, like Akiren, knows that this isn't the real reality. And it looks like they both accepted it. Faz, can you make a video where we accept alternate reality 2/2 in conversation with Akechi?~

Yeah, unlike the ending where Akechi kills Joker I REALLY like this ending because as far as "Bad Endings" go, this is extremely creative. @@samuraii150 First of all, I didn't say that I prefer this reality to the real reality. Because... I don't know. I don't know what I would choose if I were the one of characters. Based on what we know about the Maruki world, it doesn't look like the world has stopped evolving or that nothing bad can happen here anymore. Just now there are factors present or absent, that help people live a little better(hah, in this world, even gay marriage is now legal). All people remained the same as they were. Some people just lost particularly painful memories. Even those who have changed, have become what they always wanted and could be, but because of a number of certain circumstances could not become what they wanted(for example, as Ishimaru sensei). It's not like Maruki can and does want to brainwash people and manipulate them. Well... How we were told the game, to 2/03 world would be completely changed, and nothing more drastic Maruki to do couldn't. Now he will be an eternal psychotherapist, observing and helping others if necessary.
