Pnus Mugo Bonsai from Nursery stock. May have cut too much root from this one. Rest assured it will have much TLC. I give it a 50 : 50 chance of survival. Either way I will document it so you will know.
This will be the first in a new play list.
• Mugo Pine Bonsai
June 2020 THE TREE IS STILL ALIVE!!!!!! Do check the playlist for further videos.

The root pruning was aggressive. Last year I lost 1 JWP and 2 Mugo pines when I over pruned their roots. But 2 other Mugo's where I only removed half the base roots and repotted that way survived and thrived. Personally, I would have pruned back the main leader of the tree to the two side branches you left to improve the tape and offer a change of direction in the trunk direction. I think leaving the current leader is too straight and to uniform in taper. But well done. You definitely have more balls than I do! :)

Hi there. I started using Sanicat Pink non clumping last year as the one I used to get from Tesco disappeared from the shelves. It seems very good so far and didn't break down over last winter. I think the important thing is that it must be clay and never ever get clumping. Cheers. Sid.

Hey Sid, I just bought one of these Mugo Pines about 2 hours ago and its already the end of may here in Canada, although spring comes pretty late here (trees have just leafed out, both our apple trees are still blooming) I am worried that repotting it would be risky at this time. The least I want to do is see what the surface roots look like. The candles on it have extended quite a bit on it so im not sure if I should prune back the candles and leave it in its original nursery pot till late summer or should I slip pot it and let the candles become branches?? Even if I do change the pot it will be slip potting so most of the roots will be undisturbed.
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 4 жыл бұрын
Without seeing the tree I would say slip potting is the safest way to go. Patience is key with bonsai. Lots want to show you "instant" bonsai but I hear from those that know that many of those demonstration trees dont last a year after shows. Stay safe
@murtazazaidi95
@murtazazaidi95 4 жыл бұрын
@@SidsTrees Thanks for your reply. Slip potting it is then. Pot Ive chosen seems like its deeper than the one youve used though not nearly as nice. It was actually a storage basket i drilled some holes into. I used a similar one for my Eastern white pine and my burning bush and theyre both doing fine so no reason this wouldn't. I agree with you on that "instant" bonsai thing, im in it for the long run. I generally prefer clip and grow and directional pruning methods rather than wiring and bending for that perfect look.

I have found that some trees you can get away with that much cutting but not Mugo's their roots are to sensitive and would be very very surprised if it lives. At all you should have just reduced the roots and done no trimming and wait till next season to do more. The shock will be to great for this species! You need the fine feeder roots the big ones can be cut most times in you have good base in the root ball. That poor little tree, live and learn I guess. I have been their as well. Good Luck on you bonsai journey.

@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 4 жыл бұрын
@@mikenickerson3433 depends on the tree and the growth. Pines can take up to a couple of years. You may need to remove the wire if it starts to cut in. Wait, and if they "bounce back" wire again. Most deciduous species "set" quicker. Good luck. Stay safe

Far too late in the season candles are far too long and developed u must be around end june/ beg july The soil has to be dry to take it away en unfasten slovely the root ball ! And being very careful with thin roots that are feeding the plant ! The very best moment is when you unpot and see the mass of roots with white turgid tips it means the tree is starting waking up . Normally after repotting and watering adding some old soil for michorryze you give water and leave the plant rest fir two weeks best period is when the weater is not too much sunny and have rain .. .. and Read Naka to learn hiw to !!

Also you're not the first to tell me I did it "all wrong" "the tree will die" "you've killed it" etc. If you check the playlist however you will see it is still alive and thriving. kzfaq.info/sun/PLI0f2VfjK4CsfFLa1BfPqau4oooQLrWP6 As with most things in life there is more than one way to do things. A pine takes sometimes 2 years before wither and die , they are not like leaf trees ! If your survived i am happy for you as at first sight the overall appearence of the pine was quite nice and interesting .. i did not see all your video as .. u made me ferl sick ! i have a penta since 30 years and blacks pines , i know pines quite well i was lucky ... As Micael Persiano said once .. when you cut roots in a pine your heart stop beating ! Take care .. will see your link thanks ! Regards

And dam do you put any organic matter in you your potting soil?? Wouldn't that mean you would have to add Fertilizer to roots that have just been pruned and possibly burn the roots? I'm by no means a expert but that was just a thought I had rolling around in my head.
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 2 жыл бұрын
I could have put it back but without cutting the long roots it would still have had long roots with all the feeder roots at the end the next year so wouldn't have helped. Because I cut them away the tree produced new feeder roots closer to the trunk. It was a risk as I acknowledged in the video. Another reason why I don't like tospend a lot of money on starter material. Stay safe.
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 2 жыл бұрын
There is about 10 percent organic content in my soil mix for pines. Fertiliser doesn't hurt the feeder roots once they get going but I wouldn't add additional feed for 4-6 weeks after a repot at least. This tree is growing quite happily on my benches right now. Stay safe
