This in my opinion would absolutely secure physical media.

With the issues studios have been encountering with quality and master issues. This would take a lot to press consistently and would drive the price up. Just look at Laserdisc mastering/pressing plants at $5 to manufacture in 1978 that's over $20 to master one disc today.

I agree with Don, streaming is here to stay, but for those who don’t want to buy K-Scape we’d love this mass storage format. Uncompressed lossless content on a disc! 😊👍

Does that mean you can put Lords Of The Rings and The Hobbit on one disc. That would be kool. Maybe now they can put 3D movies in 4k.

IMO I would look into physical media over streaming. Coming from an IT background more secure less drops and more important if streaming devices do not go down in prices there another options to go to.

Fully agree. A lot of people hate on physical media, especially if they own a kaleidoscape (which I'm not against), but there are ALOT of pros to owning the actual disc (cost, reliability & resale/loaning to fam or friends).

Don mentioned that the niche crowd might go for physical discs but not the general public. That's the same for kaleidoscape. Kaleidoscape is currently for the uber niche. It's always interesting seeing where things actually go. I never thought I'd see vinyl come back.

I think this tech would be more impactful for industry data storage and archival purposes. Im under the impression that optical media can last longer than hard drives (ive heard the typical hdd can't reliably last beyond 10 years so big tech companies have to renew and migrate data on a regular basis)

If it can push costs down, physical media could have a shot coming back. I don't like paying 30 bucks for a 4k movie. I didn't like paying 30 bucks paying for 3D blu rays. I was happy at the 15- 20 dollar mark.

I'll buy a few specific 4Ks right at release but I usually get them after the price drops. It's still less than kaleidoscape. Kaleidoscape does have alot of benefits & perks but I'll wait for that price to drop also. If they get more users, it will.

I like having a thought like this. Yes, i also think, analog Technologie will last forever, digital is more of a momentary Pick. We use Digital to help us evolve analog tech.

The only use case would be to use it for data storage. Maybe in commercial cinemas like IMAX we can get uncompressed lossless playback. But still not sure if it would be able to read that much data that fast.

I think we may see a return of physical media with the way streaming is going this service to get this movie this service to get that movie and it moving to every movie studio having its own streaming service to subscribe to to get their shows and movies and at that point physical media is way cheaper. This could go the other way and increase the pirating of movies aswell. I perfer to get the disk instead of stream as you can still watch during internet outages.

This is super impressive, but a Petabit (Pb) is 8 times less than a Petabyte (PB), so a PB would be 1‘000‘000 Gigabytes (GB)…..what on earth would I ever want to do, with so much storage?🧐 (though people in the 80s thought that about a 20MB Harddrive😂)

I’m not getting the concept. Is it that you can store a ridiculous amount of movies on a single disc? It is an interesting point about K though. They make their money on putting a premium on storage. So as storage becomes cheaper and cheaper how will it affect them. Besides making it seem more and more like a price gouge it could also lead to high bit rate streaming becoming available. That may still be a pipe dream of mine but the cost of storage has to be a factor in it.

If home users could write to it like a DVR and a home user could read from it fast enough for it to play UHD or above quality movies at an affordable price it might catch on, over and above hard drives, but at this stage of development, that seems pretty unlikely any time soon. But I can see large data centers going for this big time, spinning HD's have a size and energy cost to them, this would cure a lot of those headaches, if the read speed was fast enough.

That’s very impressive-I love having all of Game of Thrones in one disc. Sadly, it will never happen. No tech company or movie studio is investing in physical media anymore since everything now is subscription-based. And soon next-gen codecs and compression tech are going to allow the Apple Store and streamers like Netflix to deliver 4K blu-ray quality, and Kaleidoscape will likely disappear. Let’s hope I’m wrong and GOT on one disc happens.

As long as i can get my dvd´s, blurays and 4K on physical media. I will never stream. In fact. I only watch movies the physical way. I am that old school. Wouldn’t this new high storage make Kelidascape? Klidascape is $8k to 12k. The guy with beard does not know what he is talking about. Unless the cost of the new blu ray player is $5k everyone will switch to this format.

Streaming is here to stay, but not to replace better quality discs. The demand for bandwidth is going up a lot, and streaming is a compressed version , of an already compressed media disc due to storage restraints. A high end music video is around 10 gigs for 3 and a half minutes . That is 4K quality, and it is STILL compressed. What about high FPS movies like Titanic, Avatar, etc? What about frame by frame resolution rather than MPEG encryption? I buy movies because the theater cannot compare to the audio and video quality I get at home. PLus I can watch it when I want, as often as I want. Streaming? Nope. You have to see IF it is available, and what quality. You only need look back at mp3's which were going to "do away with" records and such. Turns out people wanted better audio than even CD quality, and yes, records made a comeback, not because mp3's were superior, but rather that lacked quality and fidelity that purists loved. There is a Remake of Godzilla 1998 that is a remastered and limited 4K movie that is selling very well. People want better, not "watchable" movies.

This would be Awesome. That's a lot of data on a disc. Something like this would secure Disc for real. Streaming will shoot themselves in the foot. Because them gonna Keep finding ways to Charge more money for nothing. Disc is Better because of Digital Codes which u can Keep FOREVER. License Expire for streaming and u lose ur shows & movies. Jus image LotR, The Hobbits, Star Wars, Star Trek, All Marvel & DC movies on one disc. What would be AWEsome is that if u could make ur own Custom library of movies on a disc.If this was to come out in some form. I hope they don't say u hav to Upgrade ur player to use the disc.🙄
