Hey Caleb! A few weeks ago the Sirui 75mm indigogo account had closed-- I rewatched your video on that lens and clicked on your link and was able to still order one at the early bird rate. So Thank You! Wow the flares look really good on the great joy! I'm only shooting RF now-- So i'm curious to find out more about the RF version of this lens. I have the 50mm and 75mm of the Sirui's but now I wish i was collecting the set of the great joy's instead. better flares and 1.8 with a crop-in makes more sense to me. also that minimum focus distance. Love these flares, sorry but Sirui has always bothered me. On the markings: Yusss metric! On the squeeze factor changing at minimum focus: the Sirui also has that. And that starts at 1.6 and goes more to 1.4 at minimum. So yeah the GreatJoy still wins in this regard, esp. with is minimum focus distance.

It makes me all giddy when considering that the EF mount version will work for all cameras except for EF mount cameras :-) At least most of the DSLRs. It would be great if there could have been a "standard" simple mount that these third party lens makers could use and send simple dumb adapters with the lenses for all the popular mounts. So there could be just one SKU. These adapters could be attached with screws to make it a tight fit. Most customers would probably change the mount only once during the first setup so no need for elaborate mechanical designs for easy field swapping. So there would be less need for worry about the mount to use. I would prefer the mft mount now for my gh cameras and the lower price but then I would be out of luck if I buy an S5 in the future. In a way the EF mount and perhaps the PL mount here is that "universal" mount for mirrorless that I dream of. An idea that you have already embraced in one of your previous videos. Very cool lens, would love to have one but I think I 'll hold on and see if the "original" Sirui lenses will start to get even lower on the second hand market. When I can find the 50mm 1.33x for around 300$ or less the piggybank will be pillaged...

Hello Caleb, thanks for all your great videos. I am shooting video outdoors and as soon as the sun comes out, my 90 D does not adjust. I want the aperture to stay open and change the shutter speed. But this Av-Shooting is not possible. I have a variable ND filter, but no assistant who could operate it. It s so annoying. Am I just using the wrong camera and a Panasonic could do that for me (like change the shutter speed to keep exposure equal)?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I feel like the 1.8x to 1.6x squeeze during the focus pull would not be as big of a problem as everyone is making it out to be. For example in FCPX, couldn't you just make your timeline resolution to a custom 2.39:1 pixel ratio for whatever your resolution is, then select all your clips to Fill? Am I missing a reason why everyone is saying each individual shot would need to be adjusted?

It has more to do with the method of focus, synchro focus (the method of focusing, where both anamorphic and spherical lenses focus in tandem). Focusing the anamorphic element itself changes the squeeze factor unfortunately. More info here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gb6TndKEsLjUiYk.html

My biggest issue with these cheaper anamorphic lenses is what you said regarding the squeeze factor changing depending on your range of focus. That's a HUGE ISSUE! If you rack from a close up subject to one far away (short film or something), then your squeeze factor is f**ked. That's such a major issue I just don't get how people can even use this lens or the sirui. I 100% understand wanting an anamorphic lens, I like most want one too, but I'm going to wait until I can afford a vazen or an atlas orion lens. Those are reliable lenses, I've used them before, they work properly. None of this changing squeeze factor bullshit

EF lenses tend to be heavier than their mirrorless counterparts due to the extra space required for the mirror to flip up. So making it this way likely led to a more compact/lightweight design. Think RF Lenses compared to EF equivalents. If you follow the link you'll see the RF/E/L mount equivalent lens has a normal-looking mount and is also cheaper. It's pretty safe to assume the EF was adapted to that design.
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 2 жыл бұрын
They would probably have to completely re-design the lens. This is pretty much a mirrorless lens but they cut out a chunk on the rear so that you could still mount in on EF/PL.

No. It just means you will be constantly adjusting your desqueeze in post (depending on the focus pull and type of shot) - which is a pain in the ass. Sirui has this issue also, and from what I recall using Vazen so did they. It’s why quality anamorphics are so damn expensive. The breathing, ratio and overall quality are not easy to achieve. 😐

Wait, if the squeeze factor changes with focus distance, is it basically impossible (or at least an involved post-production fix) to rack focus in a shot? Does the image just get elongated/squished when pulling to something close? That sounds like a huge downside...
@Holtenstein
@Holtenstein 2 жыл бұрын
This is what they had to fix in the 1950's when they started using anamorphics. It's called the mumps. Actors had contracts stating that they wouldn't be filmed for close-ups with this kind of lens!

The squeeze seems to never be less than 1.6x, so you can still have a full 2.4:1 ratio without cropping, if you're shooting open gate 3:2. But you'd probably have to keyframe the squeeze on each shot if you do a focus pull that is close enough to shift the squeeze.

Z cam e2 f6, Panasonic s1H You would buy this not just for wider field of view but for the anamorphic look in regard to bokeh and the subtle flares. A MUCH better option than the sirui IMO

@@Jared10112 better choice would be the S1 for budget. It can do 5.9K so that's open gate. S1H is hardly budget.

So you knew the answer then already? If you are wanting to shoot anamorphic on a camera body that’s less than 3k. You’re better off going for sirui 1.33x apsc lenses.

It's a cool lens for sure. But King? Not at all. It has the mumps. That's a big problem! Love the size, weight, minimum flares, and the stretch.

Confusing. The lens has a blue teal flare, but the Ring on the body in Amber… WUWT?

How is the compatibility of this lens with the EF mount camera? Based on our current test results, the following cameras are compatible: Zcam-E2 (with built-in filters), Mavo LF, BMPCC6K, BMPCC6K Pro, BMPCC6K URAS Mini Pro, RED Monstro 8K VV, Canon SLR cameras, and Canon EF mount cine cameras, compatible with Canon original EF-RF adapter ring. Speed boosters and adapters with built-in filters or glass elements are not compatible.

I think it would actually work fine. Those cameras don't have mirrors so you shouldn't have any issues.
