Hey Ray Ray. Thanks for doing my trailer tires last month. I work at dorman and I was a quality engineer from 2016 until 2022. When I started the warranty Rate was over 50% and I got it down to less than 15% before I took a higher position in Dorman. They've really turned the focus more toward quality.

I just bought and installed a Dorman coolant reservoir on my 2011 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost and so far that bottle is solid. It got awesome reviews from everyone who bought one and it saved me about $75 compared to the Motorcraft part. I also likes what Dorman did with the heater hose for my truck. Replacing the stupid plastic "Y" pipe with an aluminum pipe. Nice job!

Being an internet armchair mechanic there’s been a lot of brutal episodes/jobs that have spoiled my Zen lately!😂 Living precariously through your troubles and tribulations of these repairs is entertaining in its self, sometimes I’d give away my fortunes ( I have no fortune 😂) for a quick fix and a oil change but that ain’t real life. Ray don’t let the comment section get you down brother, you’ll go crazy over a minority of viewers that you ain’t going to please looking to point out something thing to complain about, when you open yourself/life out for public display there will be jerks yanking your chain. It’s disheartening to know that it’s getting under your skin, Ray..we all love you and your content. Don’t get involved in these internet flame wars, there’s no winners just opinions and like azzholes everybody’s got one. Watching you go through jobs with a joke and a smile and just persevere is remarkable ! 🙂 Most techs would just basket case these projects, but you’re honest and show the mistakes and learn from them. Yes sometimes I feel I’m watching rainman rays little garage of horrors, but that’s your charm, you never know what is coming in the door and it works and is part of my morning routine at work. Don’t change a thing, you just be you and just stop letting trolls in the comment section get you down!😎 Love and peace from the cold north!✌🏼

I hated doing electronics warranty work. The pay was crap for all the effort. But there was part of me which just would not allow me to do a half- axxed minimal repair for warranty. I always looked for other potential problems- mostly bad solder joints (Just love that horrible lead free solder) and repaired them. I had close to zero call back rate (.01 %) and refused to compromise on my work standard and ethic, even if it cost more time and effort. At least I could go home feeling that my work was above standard quality for the industry.

Ray, you didn't look at the instructions that came with the new phaser. The bolt is a torque to yield. The new bolt has to be torqued to 30 lb-ft, then turned an additional 90 degrees. I have a new FoMoCo phaser with instructions in front of me. Confirmed the specs. BTW, I have actually done this job.

Only one critique, Ray: The cam phaser bolt has a Ford Torque Spec. Anything that is not perfect with the installation will be blamed on you for not tightening that bolt to spec. Other than that, well done, Ray!! VERY well done! (Never forget: On a Ford, if it has threads, chances are there is a torque spec for that!!)

The difference in the phaser is the old design vs new. They changed the thickness of the spring and added that stud to hold more tension on the spring. I know the wedge seems sketchy but we changed tons of 3V Mustang cams using those and never had one slip if wedged tightly like you did. The chain guides have a lip to them so it can only move so much. That said the only thing i saw was the phaser bolt install. It is a torque to yield and should be replaced anytime it is removed. It is 30 ft/lbs plus 90 degrees on the bolt. It is hollow to pass oil to the phaser. If over/under torqued they are known to collapse and back out. If this happens, it usually eats the cam and the phaser and sometimes the timing cover and valve cover. I also realize this is warranty work so they may have cheaped on that as well.

Ray I like the longer videos. Looking forward to the exhaust manifold change whenever it comes out. I'll have to do mine at some point but right now it's not making any noise but I can see a crack or two in the manifold. Changing the phasers by themselves is fairly painless. That is in relation to doing the entire timing set. The most aggravating thing for me was getting the power steering pump back into place and the valve cover on the passenger side on and off without having an a/c machine to evacuate the refrigerant. I like the 5.4 other than all the timing problems. decent power and all. I'm considering either putting a 4-BT Cummins in it or removing the current timing setup and doing what I saw a guy on here did a few years go and do a homebrew (insert some random supercar name I can't bother to remember here) valve actuation setup with off the shelf parts. Not decided yet but I may re-power with the Cummins and do the mods with the 5.4 out of the truck. Sadly it's stuff like the timing issues on the 5.4 and other similar things across all manufacturers that have given me a desire not to own anything much newer than I already have. Too many stupid decisions put into vehicles by stupid politicians and the even more dumbass EPA.

Oh the memories of warranty work, bad ones. At least the scrimping is confined to the replacing of items and not the labor. The labor hits were more than I could take. The manufacturers dictated how much they'd pay for a job, not how long it actually took or what's fair. Good to see your reassembly talents in action, as usual they are top notch. Thanks.

Kudos to you Sir. very professional, the way you work, and how you help your costumers is in another level. I live in mexico, i have an old sentra wagon, and have never found a reliable mechanic, they 'fix' something but break another...

I like the longer videos. I have a monitor turned facing the kitchen where I can watch it while cleaning and making coffee in the morning. People that complain about them being too long don't seem to realize the video can be paused or fast forwarded.

I have to do some more maintenance on the BMW. These videos motivate me to get on it. @ timestamp 15:49 I'm guessing that the old Cam Phaser missing the pin is the source of your clicking (moving spring). I too have noticed Doorman's increase in quality. I don't seek them out, but they have definitely come up. When I have been forced to use them, they have come through lately.

Storm smacked the coast of Maine really hard bad flooding caused by an unusually high tide(astronomic high tide) but inland we got 1 or 2 inches of snow. The concern is appreciated ray but we northerners are pretty tough. We'll be ok 👍

It's amazing how differently people's brains work. If I reassembled those engine parts the way you do, I would forget a few things. I guess no matter how you do it, the final recheck is an important step.

Thanks, Ray, for telling us in Montana about Florida damp weather. We are only -32 degress plus wind chill puts it as -45 degrees. Oh, and we only have two feet of blowing snow. I don't think I could handle the bad weather in Florida it must be brutal. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

The pin that you noticed was missing on the old one is the reason it rattles. The pin shears and causes the noise until oil pressure builds. Gotta love a Triton!

the cam phasers on the 5.4s were always loud and ticky like that, thats the way they were designed. one of the service bullitens from ford just told them to ad 5w-50 weight oil to quiet them down if anybody came in complaining about the ticking, the cam phasers adjust timing using oil pressure and using a heavier weight oil quieted them down.
