This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the parish of Hyde in the North West of the Forest (about 2 miles to the East of Fordingbridge & 7 or 8 miles to the North of Ringwood) and explore the surrounding area.
My 5.5 mile (approx) starts at the Church of Holy Ascension in Hyde after which I head North East across the Hyde cricket pitch (where I had parked my car) over some wonderful heathland to Frogham where I check out the Foresters Arms (known as the “Donkey pub”) and Blissford Hill - venue of the annual Frogham Fair Wheelbarrow race!
I then head South to Gorley Common & Gorley Hill - which was once the site of an Iron Age Hill Fort - and drop down to cross Huckles Brook. My walk then takes me past Heywood Sumner House (full of history & now a care home) and up Cuckoo Hill from where I get to enjoy some superb views over Chibden Bottom. I follow the ridge to Robin Hood's Clump for some of the most beautiful scenic views in the New Forest.
After a short rest, I head back down off the ridge and past both Furze Hill & Dorridge Hill before heading back to Gorley Common & the Hyde cricket pitch. At the end of the walk, Logan & I pop in to the Potting Shed Cafe for a “mini breakfast”!
