Join me and my dog, Logan (the Whippet), as we continue with our series of walks in the New Forest. In this episode, we start by exploring the Rufus Stone (where William II is thought to have lost his life) before taking a leisurely stroll through native woodland, meeting a pony or two, before finishing up at the Sir Walter Tyrell Inn.

A nice walk & a short to Dave .I must confess like so many I’ve passed the sign for ‘Rufus Stone ‘ so many years down the A31 , I’ve never made the point of stopping Dave. Now I shall do so on my way back too Weymouth, & try your walk someday….Thank you

Do you know Dave. In spite of living in the area frequently throughout my life, I’ve never visited the Rufus Stone. That present day version looks very clean considering when it was erected. Talking about the size of the ponies. When I lived at Sowley in the late 90s, the was a family of ponies in the area, who were all fairly short legged. Although they moved around over quite a large area, the whole group were nearly always together.

Yes, looking at old photographs, the "protective cladding" around the Rufus Stone appears to have changed over the years. It always amazes me that with all of the New Forest to roam, the ponies very rarely stray from their "haunt / favourite area".

Thanks for the walk which I enjoyed as usual. Tried to follow on my map, but not easy. Notice someone else suggested you put a route map up on screen if possible and agree that would be extremely useful on all the walks. Anyhow, look forward to viewing more walks and then getting out there with my walking group when safe to do so.

Thanks Nigel. Fair point about the route map. This was one of my very early videos & I was still "finding my way" with the presentation (!). More recent videos (and indeed all future ones) now have the route marked on an OS map shown on screen. Thanks for watching.

Corr, that was good! Lovely weather for a stole. I remember learning about the death of Rufus at school, but although I've passed the sign to the stone many times on the A31, I've not visited. I don't have to now! A stroke of luck that pony walking into shot on the tripod take!

Cheers Nigel. Yes....I didn't notice the pony was there until I did the edit later! (PS I managed to do the "history lesson" bit at the start in one take!).

Thank you. I am always looking for new walks for my dog walking group. I am not sure though that I could find the route you took - a map at the end would be good. I enjoyed the bit of history too.

Thanks June. Good point about the map - I will try and see if it is something that I can add. The Rufus Stone Walk starts opposite the Stone, setting off into the trees at right angles to the road, leaving the cottage access on your left. There is a woodland path that drops down (over the tiny ford) passing Malwood Farm on your right. Easy walk through woods to broad clearing at Greys Farm, bear left on to gravelled track that leads past Greys Farm & Langley Cottage. Turn left onto bridleway at cottage called "Woodpeckers" and that will eventually take you out on to the road from Brook back to the Stone (you pass the Sir Walter Tyrell pub on your way). A short walk - maybe 2.5 miles - but OK for dogs (Logan enjoyed it!). Hope that helps.

Holding pen's for when the ponies are rounded up
@DaveFord

I did wonder about that at first Dee-Anne. Then I noticed that the fencing (which looked as though it had only recently been put up) was fully enclosed and there is no actual entrance. I must go back there again to see if it was a "temporary" thing (the fencing didn't look that "substantial") or any signs put to up to explain.

Just catching up on some of your earlier walks...did you find out what the 3 enclosures were for?
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 4 жыл бұрын
The landlord at the pub thought they were temporary fencing (blocking off part of the track) to allow the track to recover from constant pounding by walkers (it certainly was very muddy in parts further down the track). It wasn't solid or strong enough to be any type of "holding pen" & indeed they didn't have any entrances. I have yet to see anything like that elsewhere on the Forest!
