The team discusses the idea that most of the classic records and tones were all made with new gear at that time.

The same thing applies to acoustic guitar players. Players have convinced themselves that vintage guitars are the Holy Grail of acoustic guitar tone, and are blinded to the fact that we are objectively living in a Golden Age of acoustic guitar manufacturing.

Thanks for responding to my comment guys, and in a positive way. You can imagine the heat I take on TGP for that point of view. I've been playing for 40 years and I've played some really great and some not so great guitars from every era of the electric guitar. I think modern guitar makers are killing it. Have a good one!

I only wonder if Clapton was so tired of the headache the next day after playing his Marshall's, that he found that Champ and said I can make music with this little thing.

It’s all because in the 60s and early 70s those guys were writing the book as they went along!!! A beautiful time of guitar architecture!!!, thank you guys 🎸

I read somewhere that all of Springsteen’s butterscotch Esquires used in concert are new recreations of the original. He pulls that out for recording. This may not be true, but it seems improbable that any pro but Willie Nelson has played the same instrument for half a century. And Trigger is constantly undergoing a lot of top notch care. All learned on the web, so … maybe.

The one that stands out is Money For Nothing by Dire Straits. Legendary riff on a ‘59 reissue Les Paul from 1983, through a wah and into an old Marshall. Before recording a mic slipped and was pointing at the ground, but they kept it there because it sounded so heavy. A few weeks later they tried to recreate it at the Power Station with the exact same gear and mics, and couldn’t get close at all. There was something on that faithful day that brought out that amazing sound, and it was never found again. It’s all in the moment fellas!!!!

"I'm done buying gear. I've found the tone" said no guitarist ever.

I am pretty sure that Keith Richards recorded some guitar parts with an acoustic guitar and a tape recorder. Yet I still lust after a Two Rock or an Amplified Nation amp…what’s wrong with us?

I was in high school when Maggie May was released (yes I am old).in the '70s it was called high school for a reason. As Jonathan knows, it's not illegal unless you get caught.

I have a Hendrix Strat MIM. Just for the Vibe. Also a entry level Marshall. Just for the Vibe. This as an absolut beginner. I have no talent, but I feel the Vibe. One Luthier told me once if you get your hands on a MIIM one buy it. My Squier 70s Strat has also this Vibe but sounds completely different. I am not just a lover of vintage I am in the age of even remembering them. A great time it was. Tube Radio, Tube TV. Apollo, Clay a.s.o.. And healthier food, but I still smoke. But this as an addict not because of the Vibe. Almost everyone smoked. I live across the Atlantic in a rich non EU country but loved the the English and American Bands, but preferred English a bit more. But I did not understand the lyrics but felt the Vibe. Good music needs no language knowledge.

We have great amps and very close reissues today but something magical about some amps. Not all old amps are great (like guitars) but some are magic. I've been lucky enough to have owned sevral Holy Grail models, and some were just meh, not that model, just specific amps

Such a good point. I wonder if the electric guitar had came about 50 years before it did, would the rock icons of the 60's and 70's have been seeking 'vintage' gear, the way that many people do now. Were these guys buying new gear because there wasn't much old stuff at that time? I'm finding it hard to illustrate my point. Hopefully what I said makes sense.

Sweet Home Alabama was recorded by Ed King with a new, at the time, stock 1973 Fender Stratocaster through a Fender Twin, according to an Ed King interview on KZfaq done not too long before his passing. It used to be that heavy '70s Fenders and Norlin era Gibsons were not seen as very good, as a whole. Everyone thought the earlier '50s and '60s guitars were much better. Now, people seem to value the '70s Fender and Gibsons more than they should. These days, I would rather have a modern custom shop guitar than an older one.
