I love writing with my N12. I have a Pelikan m200 & a vintage 400nn is currently en route, but for everyday use, I've really been enjoying my assortment of Hongdian, Majohn & Kaigelu pens. Jinhao gets an honorable mention, but I really wish they offered more filling systems, if they came out with a piston filler I would be a happy camper.

As a Pelikan person, I wholeheartedly agree with your conclusion: they just feel so much better, and will probably be usable for generations. But since I wouldn't take my Souveräns to the office, I am quite happy that the current generation of affordable pens exists.

good idea… I took my M600 to the office and dropped it on its butt after missing my pocket. The piston knob works fine, still, but doesn’t “grab” when all the way in, the way it used to. At least it wasn’t my 800. But yes, I do love how many $10-50 pens there are out there now. I can’t get enough Jinhao 82s

Fantastic review as always, Doug. Slightly off topic, but since you mentioned it in your comparison, my 197x Montblanc 149 beats any of my Pelikans I own (m600s, m800s, or my m1000) for sheer joy of writing experience. Slightly stubbish, wet, smooth but with just a tiny bit of feedback. And this pains me to say as a Pelikan lover.

I adore Pelikans without being able to put my finger on why, probably some ineffable gestalt quality; it's the overall writing experience. The feel of the material is certainly part of it.

I agree completely. I think the main reason the M800 is the best pen in m collection is how I am able to write with it. My handwriting gets instantly better when I hold the M800. Is it a combination of the balance and ergonomics with how the nib creates a line? I don't know but I love it.

If you want to buy such a fountain pen, don't look for such Chinese products, but that shouldn't sound derogatory towards Hongdian. Ultimately, the writing feeling and writing behavior determine how good a fountain pen is. What I personally find regrettable is the fact that Pelikan is now owned by an investor from Malaysia.

You were fretting that Doug might conclude the M800 was "maybe not worth the cost differential" Without the superb nib tweaking like yours, an M800 blue stripe just sold second-hand but unused on eBay for US$336. I was severely tempted but painfully chose not to bid. US$250 to US$275 is my limit for this, which is my grail pen. Under no circumstances is the Pelikan M800 and M805 fairly priced at US$650. That is not saying it isn't "worth" it. Of course, it is worth what someone is willing to pay. Andy Warhol's iconic stencil painting of Marilyn Monroe's face sold in May 2023 for US$198 MILLION. It's artistic value is dubious for, at best, US$1000. But this is just me whining because I don't want to pay the going price for the M800 and very likely will never write with one. Objects tagged with trendy, artifical luxury-prices lose their appeal.

Do you have any guesses as to nib swapping to an M or specialised grind (say a Bobby nib)? Do you think it's friction fit or a screw-in housing? I've scoured FPN and Reddit and the various sales platforms, but no one seems to have reviewed this pen in as much detail as you! Thank you for your time!
@InkquiringMinds28 күн бұрын
The nib is friction fit inside the nib collar which unscrews for replacing with other Hongdian nibs in Hongdian nib collars. If you wish to swap in another #6 nib, you'll have to pull the Hongdian nib from the collar and use the Hongdian feed and collar with the new nib.

I imagine the answer is 'no' but i simply MUST ask - are the feed and nib combined in the N12 and able to be swapped with a Pelikan's whole nib unit? I have a pipe dream of being able to put cheaper Pelikan nib units (like their M200) in other pens. Hard to justify a flock as it were on my budget but a 50$ pen+nib is a lot more doable for a Pelikan-like experience. While it technically works in the Skrikks 419 it caused a consistent seeping of the ink out of the nib that made it not worth it for me, it was so messy. Might give this pen a try either way...

No matter how well it may perform, you see it next to the Pelikan and you see a legend and then you see the Hongdian again and you see a legend wannabe. Even the design is just not quite there yet. You see that it is not quite mature to be released as a design. I have one Hongdian and that is the Blak Forest which is a copy of Otto Hutt Black Forest. I did not know it was a copy and if I knew I would not buy it. It is definitely worth the $15 as an end result, but it is also a matter of ethics when you buy a product that is a stolen design.

How is it not stolen? I look at my Hongdian Black Forest and the Otto Hutt Black Forest and other than the emblem on top they look identical. What more do you need to call it a stolen design? @@jasoncharalambides387I was talking about the N12 not being a design stolen from Pelikan. The HD BF vs Otto Hutt 04 issue is debatable as evidenced by the discussion on reddit www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/108d8jl/are_the_hongdian_black_forest_pens_ripoffs_of/ I'd say it is as close a copy as you can get - similar to the Moonman M800 vs the Leonardo Momento Zero. @@InkquiringMinds I did buy a HD Black Forest and it was later that I realized that it looked identical to a pen I did not even know of its existence. I think that it is clear that this is the case I was referring as stolen design. Again, being inspired by someone's work is one thing but copying and selling is another. Where do we draw the line? That's a difficult one. It is a thick fuzzy zone to cross, not a thin crisp black line on white paper. I remember the comment that was once made for a similar situation. It is like pornography. Where do you draw the line? The truth is that when you see it, you know what you see and which side of that line it is. Have a Merry Christmas Doug!
