I’ve been doing tree work now for a little over 10 years, and I love the outlook you have on the crew mentality. Working as a well oiled machine is necessary on a job site. Everyone has a role and they all need to be respected.

Same in construction. Always, always, always look around and be aware of what’s going on around you. Sometimes it’s up, sometimes it’s down, sometimes it’s in front of you and sometimes it’s next to you.

Very helpful voiceovers Buckin, thank you. My mentors always told me that the work the groundworkers are doing is just like the signature of a stump in the woods, it’s what the landowners are going to remember, the order, organization, behavior, and level of respect for property and fellow people is everything. Love this video, a worker that can find a place in any system is an extremely valuable and helpful human.

When you insert yourself into the two man operation, it’s no longer a two man operation. Situations dictate, but to use this video as an example, the third man would/could/should: 1. Manage and untie the butt of the branch. 2. Run a medium size saw to limb any branches that won’t fit the chipper. 3. Pull the rope up for the climber, whenever possible. 4. Manage the climbers climbing line. 5. Install friction devices and use friction in multiple ways to lower branches. 6. Serve as a lookout for other ground men, with his eyes up as much as possible. 7. Fuel a saw, adjust or switch chains and bars. 8. Tie a few knots with confidence. 9. Remove, replace, and mend fences. 10. Back large trucks with trailers into tight spaces. 11. Communicate using hand and arm signals. 12. Operate various types of equipment without damaging lawns and property. 13. Sharpen saws. 14. Grease equipment. 15. Check all equipments engine oil. 16. Direct traffic. 17. Drag branches. 18. Operate a rake efficiently. 19. Hitch a trailer, plug in the lights, attach the breakaway cable, install cotter-pin. 20. Perform a vehicle pre trip inspection. 21. Clean air filters on all equipment. 22. Prime an injector pump. 23. Change chipper knives. 24. Change grinder teeth. 25. Clear a clogged chipper chute. 26. Check tie pressures and add air as needed. 27. Clean dust screens and radiators. 28. Teach others how to do all of these things. If you can do all of these things proficiently and properly, you just may be; The Greatest Ground Guy on the Planet, or at least on your crew some mornings while your boss is out doing estimates. 😂

My friend Ray would always visit a job a day or two later to check on the landowner and see what he might have missed. Checking his work and perhaps only having a rake in hand for a final sweep of the job. He wasn’t looking for anything out of it besides doing his best work.

Buckin', it is so refreshing to hear someone speak highly of the groundsman in tree service. I have been on a crew for 4 months now, and I love it. I will leave the tree crew to return to my "real job" in landscaping and lawn care but will return to the trees next fall, and even some weekends and such all summer. I love tree work. Getting hot, sweaty, and sore in the best way possible. Thanks for all you do for this community, BBR!

G'day Buckin Ian and Hogan, I helped an old mate take some trees down in his yard this week his adult son was in the 40 foot cherry picker going ok with some suggestions from the ground then I dropped them Spotted Gum rock solid to be milled into axe blanks and wedges 👍.PS I'd like to honour the Passing this morning of my uncle John Anderson suddenly age 85 Husband father grandfather great, logger saw miller log truck driver lumber delivery driver. He retired without a single accident then the two drivers that replaced him totalled two trucks in six months so his old boss begged for him to come back until he could find a suitable replacement. Another legend from the giant hardwoods gone to God.

The Honeybees that take out the dead bees from the hive in winter (otherwise the dead bees decompose or worse block the entrance) are as important as the bees that go out for pollen and nectar. Some good nuggets of wisdom here, especially for young people, irrespective of blue or white collar jobs, but especially in the trades, anticipate what your boss or co-workers might need & don't have an attitude. I can guarantee you'll get & keep jobs others lose. & you'll gain respect. Don't look at it like you're making your boss look good (although you are) by doing so. Instead view it as, like Buckin' said, 'workin for yourself' because it makes you look good as well. Probably one of the most important things a parent can teach a kid IMHO.
