An uninterrupted reinforced jogless transition from the neck ribbing to the body of a sweater worked from the top down without breaking the yarn and without knots. Perfect especially for knitting with the yarn on cones - continuous uninterrupted knitting. Total control over the number of stitches - no guess work. Without a jog/completely jogless. Suitable for turtleneck and snug fitting neck opening.
Took me some brainstorming to develop when I worked on one of my sweaters and decided it might be a great idea. I did not want to break the yarn that was on a cone, and I wanted the turtleneck ribbing to be cast-on with a very elastic Italian cast-on method. So the rib had to be worked top down. But without the reinforcement it wouldn’t work - the neck ribbing would stretch and loose shape. Hope you’ll find it helpful.

Thank you for your videos, Irina. I love how the Italian cast on looks and stretches. I am trying to calculate how many stitches to cast on for a mock turtleneck dk raglan sweater using your jogless reinforced transition with a dk yarn (5 st/in). I can't tell how much the stabilizing transition limits the stretch and if I need to use the measurement of my head (22") rather than my neck (14"). What do you advise? Thank you so much.

Hi Margery! This is what I did (for several sweaters): I first swatch to determine what needle sizes to use for the best look of the ribbing. I wash the swatch to confirm that it still looks good, after it dries. Then based on the washed swatch gauge I calculate how many stitches I need for the circumference of the turtleneck at the top. In my case I like that when I pull it up it hugs the face below my ears (or under my nose 😀). Then I compare that circumference with the circumference of the neck opening at the base of the collar. If it’s big enough - good. But for my sweaters I used a bigger needle (0.25-0.5 mm up) for the last ~ 7-10cm. It allowed for a more comfortable opening. Then bind off. Usually the hook size was the same size as the needle size for the body (the body was in stockinette stitch). You can swatch 20 x 20 cm of the ribbing flat, bind off, wash, then check if you need to change the needle size for the last 10 cm, the hook size for binding off, and I would knit maybe 1" or so of the body to make sure that the stitches look good everywhere on the swatch before the big job. Also, the ability to stretch depends on the yarn composition - wool vs cotton, for example. Hook chain bind-off is pretty stable, but if it’s wool it will stretch. To check how much the bound-off edge will "give", I stretch the bound-off edge of the swatch and measure it stretched. I hope this helps. :)

How do you get the transition so stretchy with the crochet hook. It seems that those are pretty stable and inflexible.

It depends on the yarn - I used wool which is bouncy, so even a stable edge has some spring, but with cotton or linen it would be completely inflexible - I would then make sure that my neck opening is big enough for my head to go through. )

This is a great technique but it is not seamless, there is literally a seam in between.

Would you suggest a different name for it? My idea was that it's an uninterrupted knitting in one direction (top down) keeping the neck opening from loosing shape.
