Wow I had no idea it has built in converter. I am deciding between 200-400mm vs. 600mm f4 is II and despite the f4 and beautiful background bokeh in 600mm I think the zoom in-out range of 200-400 will be more suitable. Edit: Bought excellent condition yesterday from MPB. Cannot wait to test it. Thank you for your reviews!

The primes will always be sharper but the versatility of the 200-400 can't be matched

New lens baby! Good find. Iv been tempted too at that price point. It’s the predecessor now to the 100-300 and what ever else Canon release next. The sharpness from that zoom is a feat in itself. Enjoy!

Neat lens! did not realize it has the built in converter. I purchased a used 500mm f4 L IS USM a few months ago to use with my canon 7D mark ii with amazing sharp results. and now i have an R5 so i sometimes use the 1.4X to get same affective focal length without using the in body 1.6X crop. Canon L series lenses are awesome,well worth the money ( used that is ), thanks for the review.

Not sure why , I found combined 70-200 and 200-400 + 1.4x will solve many of the general shooting range. It's amazing , not heavy , about 3.6kg compared to crazy 400 2.8L series

Have they actually done any upgrades on this lens since release? I note they haven't released a mkii version and now never will, but its getting on a bit now, being an 11 year old design. I'd love to be able to replace my 100-400ii with one, but for what I shoot the cost, even used, isn't viable and I need the lightweight of the 100-400 ii. The 200-400 would be awesome though.

Nah its the same lens as it was when launched, Still works very well though if not abit heavy

Thx for review , my dilemma is 500f4is mk1 or 200-400f4. Quality of 500 vs zoom options in 200-400. If you have to buy only one from them what you will buy ? Regards Dariusz

The 200-400 is becoming my go to atm, Some more testing is needed and then I'll do a video comparing it to the primes

Isn't the 200-400 considerably more expensive than the 500f4 Mk I? I've seen those going for around three grand. Of course, I'm sure the 200-400 would focus a lot faster than a twenty year old lens. Image quality would likely be very good either way, with a slight nod to the newer lens, but insignificant in the real world I would think. I would go for the lower price and the reach, if reach is something you need.

Have you tried to mount an additional 1,4 converter on the 200-400? Does it work?

I've nit tried it but it can be used with further adaptors

How about the imag e quality compared with 400mm old prime lenses?

Where is Canon's version of Nikon's $1700.00 180-600 5.6-6.3? That's a lens I would buy in a heartbeat. In order to get 600mm in a Canon lens you either have to spend $16,000.00 or settle for a fixed f11! Somehow Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Sigma and Tamron can all manage sub-$2,000.00 600mm lenses that you can actually shoot in other than bright sunlight.
