New Record Dealer At The Antique Mall: Are The Records Any Good?

Chris from Rekkid Talk was pleased to find a new record vendor with several boxes of albums in an antique mall that is usually not great for finding teh vinylz. Did I remain pleased once I looked at the new stock?
All the writing is on outer sleeves, not the covers.

That stinks when they are oblivious how to grade. At my local antique mall, there was a vendor selling School's Out by Alice Cooper, and wanted like $40 for it. They didn't have any grading on them. I pulled it out - utter trash. Probably not even playable, all beat up. Another vendor just down the row from them, had three copies of the same album, $14 each, in VG++ condition. Wake up people, at least pull the records out and look at them before trying to sell them. I'm betting these vendors are grading the cover, and never look at the record. :)

Hi Chris!!! as usual you really have to check those record very carefully, most of them seems to be misleading gradings and turns out to be utter thrash...... Nice to see you added that Krokus best record so far. Cheers and be well

Ha, I knew at least you would be happy about that. I had several Krokus tapes as a teen, then got rid of them. I think "Headhunter" is enough for me.

Do you ever form psychological profiles of the sellers in these antique malls? They aren't all completely crazy. I like that this new seller writes the pricing information on the sleeves. Not having to worry about damage caused by price stickers is a huge win. Plus, the descriptions on the sleeves help protect the seller from theft. His record grading may leave plenty to be desired, but at least he's not an online seller. Sellers putting out trashed and moldy records is a pet peeve. Do they ever sell them? It's hard to blame them if they do. Inconsistently, I'm also happy that antique mall vendors have a reputation for putting out scratched and over-priced records. It keeps the honey holes a secret. (Sadly, my favorite local antique mall recently shuttered due to rising rents.) Happy hunting, Jacob

I didn't mind the info written on the outer sleeves, because as you said they avoided price stickers directly on the jacket and this gives them protection against price tag swappers. I do wish the grading had been accurate. I find most sellers with desirable records at fair prices sell most of them quickly, and it is the titles very few want and/or the grossly overpriced that sit around forever.

I did go through these boxes pretty well and I have a feeling those same boxes will sit in that mall for the next few years with no new stock coming in.

For a newer collector there was some good albums Prices didn’t appear to be crazy like I have seen in other antique stores.

I feel like every antique mall is annoying in some kind of way. Bad prices, selection, grading. I've certainly found cool stuff stuff, and it looks like you're having some luck here. I would be so annoyed by the fat marker on the outer sleeves that, I would probably lose patience and give up.

The grading was a joke, about 1 of 10 records were actually in the marked condition. Of course, many of those records would have been long gone if they were in better shape.

So what does that seller do? Pick up rekkids at thrift stores, jazz 'em up with plastic sleeve covers, over grade them, and hope unaware buyers actually spend their money on them? You have more patience than I do.

The writing on the outer sleeves bugs me less than putting price stickers directly on the jacket, plus they are shitty sleeves that I'm going to replace.
