New RX8 + Power steering diagnostics and rack replacement !

In this video I cleaned and tested all the wirings , connectors and modules for power steering failure , Usually on these RX8's it is the 2 connectors under the air box tray that are the culprits most of the time causing intermediate power steering failure , in my case it was a faulty steering rack that i replaced.
Steering rack part # FE01-32-110D , FE0132110D
EPS Module part # F151-67880, F15167880

Did you solder the harness wires from the top point under the airbox tray? Also you soldered each one individually right

Yes that is correct , They get soldered individually.

Hi, I'm having issues with my steering angle sensor, the diagnostic machine brought up a C1306 code which is 'steering wheel continuous angle-no center memory found during DTC initialization' Do you think the neutral positioning tool can fix this?

Do you still have electric steering or has it shut down ? Did you try turning the wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right , thats how you reset the center angle usually but your case could be more than that.

My power steering very suddenly dies. I did all the diagnostics, checked all the voltages, open and short circuits, even replaced EPS module. No luck. I have error code C1099. What code did you have Mu? I know this was a loooong time ago.

honestly been a very long time to remember the code , its possible your rack needs replacement.

Hi my 2004 rx8 has been having an issue where the ABS and DSC comes on and the steering will feel tight and after driving it and stopping At a store or something come back and go to drive it and I lose power the engine light comes on and I can only go like 10 mph and it slowly builds up to about 40 as im trying to get off the road. The lights in the console start beeping and on occasion the air with stop coming out of the vents but you still hear the blower and all of a sudden the air will come back. Am I having a power steering module problem with something else?? If I disconnect the battery the car goes back to normal for a bit but then all happens again tried to scan but get linking error any help would be appreciated

claybaby003 its hard to tell if you have multiple electrical issues in general or so. Best way is to get a scanner and pull the codes to give you some leads.

My power steering went and I have just replaced my rack and pinion and it feels like my power steering is back (the light is off now) it is not as light as it was before though. Also when taking a bend the steering wheel doesnt centre itself after the bend now. For example if I go around a round about I could literally take my hands off the wheel and the car will keep going round and round and round till I correct it. Have I missed a step? Or forgot to do something?

Usually you have to reset/recalibrate the steering wheel module using a scanner that has that feature after replacing the rack.

If i remember correctly most splines have a notch/teeth thahts slightly wider , line that up with the other side and put some grease to help it slide in.

Did your power steering shudder in amd out with the light on? My shudders occasionally but no light comes on. Maybe loose battery terminals (which they are)?

It is very similar symptoms , Good chance it is the connections under the tray , put some dielectric grease on all the connections and see if that fixes it for now.

@@MuLife that's what I did to mine. I greased them but they still go out when it rains. I think I need to re wrap my harnesses. Or maybe bypass the harness. How do you determine if its the torque sensor or the rack power? Only multimeter test?

@@Kamal-sj7it If the cleaning and dielectric grease trick does not do it then its most likely the module or the torque sensor thats in the rack. I would suggest you try soldering the connectors directly and see how that works.

Thank you for the support , i was using Autel scanner. yes it did initialize the steering position sensor.

I figured out my issue null position value was outside allowed range so it was not possible to set it.

There are alignment marks on the top of the link potentiometer that contains the steering shaft and on the shaft to line them up to neutral.

I need help I just turned on my 2004 Mazda rx8 it’s been sitting for 3 or 2 years and it turned on right away. But the steering wheel light was on it was stiff but I drove it around the block and it was stiff but when I was parked it wasn’t stiff any one llore but came back again. What could it be?

Did the power steering light come on ? if so , Check the connectors and clean them.

Its the serpentine belt or one of the pullys.

I installed a almost newrack and pinion... then that solved the problem but after driving it for awhile and parking it the light came on and the steering wheel became stiff and so I drove it again and it just started going back and forth( working and not working) so I cleaned the connectors but still not working u think I need to reset the system or???

barbozahector5 with ignition on , turn all the way left then all the way right then center the steering wheel , if that still doesnt make it work then i suggest you cut the 2 common connectors under air tray box and solder them. I had exact sypmtoms with my other rx8 and thats how i solved it. The connectors sometimes dont make contact and thats why it goes on and off.

Hi. Was it a brand new steering rack replacement or refurb unit? I assume it fixed your issue? Mine turns normal to left but to right is harder to do. It's not the wiring harness or mechanical part at fault. Have been told it's the PS rack but expensive issue to resolve. Hmm. Any input would be appreciated.

Mine was a used one that i pulled off a junkyard. You might be having faulty/intermittent connection on the big connector i talk about in the video.

Hello there! Any tips will help me. I have the similar issue with the steering, the difference is that I clean the connectors below the air filter boxlike you did at 10:50 Min and the light in the dash went off, suddenly, in a normal drive, I felt like a "hit" in the steering wheel and the light came on again, plus the steering was not soft no more. I have no idea what can it be, do you thing that I need to change the rack because just cleaning the plugs the light goes off and also, disconnecting the battery will reset, What you guys think????

David Vallejos Hello , if cleaning the connectors under the box make the light dash go away then 90% the connectors are failing , i had the exact problem with my other rx8 , i ended up cutting the connectors and directly soldering the wires , never had problems again. 👍🏻

David Vallejos or you can just replace the power steering harness if you dont want to solder.

Great!!! I will try the cheapest option that is just soldering the wires together, if the issue returns, I will definitely replace the Power Steering harness. I will look for both option of course. Thanks so much for the tips.

David Vallejos also clean the connector on the torque sensor and the main power harness on the rack. Let me know

Yeap, I did that already, however, I noticed that the issues was solved just unplugging the connectors below the air filter box, so, somehow, i think that the problem may be the steering harness in some point, i am looking for the steering harness online to purchase it and replace everything, even though i can cut the connectors and directly soldering the wires, i will check to replace the whole thing for sure. Prevention

Cant remember , but it was cleared after initializing the rack after replacement.

I had the same issue after I replace my battery. It was working fine after I replaced my battery. I lost power steering and got the code B1342 I try to reset it with my scanner and nothing then I install a power steering module and did not fix it. Then I got a steering rack from the junkyard and that did the trick.

Hi guy rx8 hard steering do this turn on ign key do not start engine and then pump your brake peddle 20 times fast and look at your oil pressure gage while pumping you will see it moving it helps steering then start engine turn left and then right and straight.
