New Styling Tricks To Hide A Tummy | The Style Insider
I regularly get asked about styling tips to minimise a tummy and so today I decided to share a few more tips on how to do it with what I call illusion dressing. In a nutshell, illusion dressing is simply using clever styling to create the illusion of something different - in this case a smaller stomach. Anyway, if you carry a little extra weight around your middle and you'd like to look a little slimmer and trimmer - without having to diet - then I'm sure you'll find some of these tips and tricks really helpful.
Thanks so much for watching.

I completely agree with you on wrap dresses! They are not flattering on anyone who doesn’t have a svelte figure. I don’t understand why they are always recommended to women with tummies.
@TColoradoF
@TColoradoF 2 жыл бұрын
The one thing that kind of feels out of place is the idea that a tummy means a lack of waist definition. Us curvier girls and short-waisted sisters may have a tummy and a clearly defined waist. I think wrap dresses do help in that case. The high-tie dresses could be good too - as long as they don’t shorten the waist too much and create unbalanced proportions between the top and bottom halves.

As for wrap dresses, I gravitate toward cotton or linen wrap dresses with an a-line skirt that is, as you say Leonie, figure skimming rather than figure hugging. Maybe the fabric is as important as the style.

I have a very large stomach. I agree and have integrated the tips you’ve stated. In addition, I choose tops with a peplum. The structure of them is perfect for folks with smaller shoulders/bust and a larger lower abdomen. I’m only 5’2” tall so I stay away from maxi dresses. They really make me look larger than I really am. Have a great day!

Structured clothing, not tight clothing almost always create a slimmer, more attractive silhouette. We have to consider multiple factors, such as material and weight of the fabric, garment cut, position of the waistline, embellishments and detailing, etc. For example, some peplum tops make me appear very inappropriately voluptuous and some instantly snatches me down a couple of sizes. This is something I love about being a woman (self-identify as...) and fashion. We can try so many options and rethink something if it doesn't work for us. Keeps life fun when it comes to dressing... I love a good challenge!

This is so great! And I am tickle pink that you are actually providing the example by demonstrating them yourself. Getting ready to take a vacay to Savannah, Ga for a family reunion and then spend some time in Atlanta, GA visiting family and friends. I so much trying to figure out what to pack since it hot and humid there verses it still on the cool side here. You provided some pretty great tips, and I will be using some of them for thinking what I should pack. This was fresh! Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

Love all these tips!! I’ve been guilty of trying the oversized blazers, I’m 5 feet tall and it just ate me up and was not flattering. Instead I got a longer blazer that hits me below my widest part, and I always wear something fitted with a belt under. 👌👌💃🏻

Thank you so much for your lovely videos; your content is consistently honest, well-thought-out, and interesting. I truly enjoy watching a content sharer, who is in my age group. Your ideas and insights are relevant and current to me and I can assume, to many women as well regardless of age. I appreciate and agree with you on the wrap dress (still love you, Ms. Von Furstenberg) as not always being the best choice for a more rounded body shape, including a larger bust. There often is not enough fabric to go around the waist and bust areas and adding a camisole takes away from the whole look. If I am looking for a wrap dress or top, I make sure to check how the fabric drapes and comes together at the ties, as well as how the armholes fit. Many designers are cutting costs by cutting armholes and shoulders much narrower than before and seam allowances... there aren't much to make alterations with.
@Thestyleinsider.
@Thestyleinsider. 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a very good point about armholes and shoulders are definitely narrower these days - it’s so frustrating 😔

These are very good tips, so many of them are spot on. Loved the subtle shoulder pad idea, and the cropped blazer defiantly helps me. The one trip that doesn't work for my straight up and down with a bulge in the middle body are the elastic waist pants. They add volume where I don't want it and like a of women built like me, they make my flat bottom look saggy. I get a droopy draws look. lol
@Thestyleinsider.
@Thestyleinsider. 2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh yes they can be tricky in that sense - what pants do you find the most flattering Dana?
@danamatsukawa4762
@danamatsukawa4762 2 жыл бұрын
@@Thestyleinsider. Brands like Spanx and NYDJ Keep the saggy bottom look away while giving enough stretch in waist without adding bulk. In other brands, I am always on the lookout the larger waisted styles with some stretch in the waist band. A mid rise is better fitting for me. I have on several occasions lowered the crotch of a mid rise pant to make them a high rise and they fit great that way. Wearing woven pants with no stretch is too binding while sitting for a person with a thicker waist. Thanks for asking.
@bluewaters3100

If you want to help that saggy bottom there is a really easy exercise program that helped me. It is called Backwards Walking and you can find it on You Tube. I walk backwards for ten minutes a day whie I am doing my morning front wards walk. I had terrible knee pain and could not even sleep at night. Within days I noticed my knees were better. It exercises parts of your muscles ll the way from hips all the way to your feet that you nomally do not use. I am almost 70 and it really changed my body!!!

Great tips. I’m so glad you mentioned that wrap dresses aren’t the best, they’re always recommended by stylists, but they are awful on fuller torsos. I have both a thicker, undefined waist and a large bust, and they just never have enough fabric to cover me, no matter how much I size up. You’re the only one who has given effective suggestions based on what really works; all those super-skinny, 20-year old self-declared “stylists” who on YT are just guessing, and they’re wrong. It’s not a matter of weight gain, every woman (and man) thickens around the middle by about age 50, the body just stores more fat there as we age. Elastic waists are critical, I just can’t get a reasonable fit in anything else, a garment with a fitted waist will be 8 or more inches too big for my always-slim hips. Great job, L!

It was SO good to hear you say "stay away from wrap style dresses". Almost all fashion channels suggest that the wrap style suits Everyone and I kept trying to find one that suited me...... I never did!!! I'm no longer in search of the elusive wrap dress, finally. I have a straight up and down (boyish) figure with a big tummy. I'm only 5ft 3" so it's not easy to shop for dresses and prefer to wear separates. Any other tips would be welcome ☺️

No shoulder pads def won’t work if you have a shorter neck. Long scarves worn open are a great option and longer pendants to draw the eye down the body and great an illusion of length. Have you tried that before?

What about if you already have broad shoulders. I’ve tried the tuck it doesn’t look good I still see my tummy. I’ve tried to only buy tops that land just below the tummy or a longer straight up and down thin tunic. Adding a thin 3rd layer helps too. It’s very difficult to hide a bigger tummy
@Thestyleinsider.
@Thestyleinsider. 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I think the key is realising you won’t hide it but you can take the emphasis away from that area. If you can it helps to stand quite a way back from the mirror when trying small tuck as the distance helps to be a little more subjective as opposed to standing up close to the mirror. I hope that makes sense?

I have started only buying v neck shirts. I had a mini tummy tuck, after four surgeries on my abdomen. Now all my fat I up high right under m breasts. I used to have a flat stomach. But I’m getting older and after so many surgeries my stomach muscles are shot. So I’m learning to dress for the body I have now. I’m not happy with it. But I’m dealing with it by changing the way I dress.

I disagree about the oversized blazers. If you pair it with skinny jeans, a body con dress, a mini bodycon, which can be ruched for extra illusion dressing, etc. It can give a contrast to the sizing making you look smaller underneath the blazer. Of course, you do have to take height and proportions into account. Really the key to dressing for your shape is wearing clothes that fit properly: neither too loose nor too tight. For example, I see a lot of "influencers" complaining about camel toe (pardon the expression). This could be solved by sizing up or looking at different lengths for the torso. A wrap dress can work to hide the tummy if it is the correct size and has some flow on top and bottom to build a V-taper. I would encourage everyone to ignore having to size up or down. Especially as women, hormones (as well as diet and exercise, sleep, etc.) are really going to impact our sizes and where we hold water. If I have to size up, I do. If I don't feel comfortable at that size, I eat cleaner, do more cardio, make sure I'm consistent in my weight training, etc.

I am not into embracing parts of my body I am not happy with, this information is helpful and welcomed. I am probably past my sell by date but love fashion and dress to keep my confidence in full swing, I prefer to keep my rolly bits under cover, I don't want my belly noticed before my outfit or me. Though I live in Florida but from London U.K. I realise that I am thinking more old school and though not disapproving of the freedom to enjoy and embrace your body, it is not for someone so set in their ways.

I wear those straight sheath or t-shirt dresses loose at home for comfort, but when I go out in them, I add a belt. Often a belt “matching” the color of the dress is best, because there is no or little color contrast to attract the eye to a less-defined waist, but they add shape. I still like wearing contrasting belts, too, it depends on the dress. I don’t think those trendy wide, tiered dresses ever work, and they’re not very sophisticated for adult women, either.

Stretch-waist pants/trousers encourage weight gain and look old, it's a no from me. Same with stretchy dresses (knit, jersey): be careful as you could easily put on weight because they still feel comfy if you gain a few pounds, and it's a slippery slope, soon you will only be able to wear oversize/stretchy clothes.

Can you please make a video talking about the difference between cropped, capri and petal pusher pants? I really don't understand why cropped can look good but I think capri and petal pusher are atrocious.
@Thestyleinsider.
@Thestyleinsider. 2 жыл бұрын
Capri are generally a little tapered and finish at your ankle (the thinnest part of your leg) whereas cropped often fall mid calf which can be really unflattering 👍🏼

cropped pants go to the ankle and capris go to mid calf....capris are outdated and not flattering, but cropped pants that hit right around ankle or just above are good

Why we should hide them? 😅 I think it’s really sad that our society force us to hide part of our bodies because we are beautiful we way we are. And it is totally okay that bodies change and parts of our body become softer or different with the time. I have a lot of friends who are so ashamed of the body after illness, surgeries, birth and I think we should normalise to show our bodies with all these so-called flaws

Society doesn't "force" you to hide your body.. if you're happy showing off a belly that looks like a jelly donut go for it, but don't make others feel bad if they don't want to advertise theirs. Don't shame women for not showing more jelly donut, and women shouldn't shame you for showing your jelly donut. It goes both ways.

@@NatalieDiViesti I don’t know whether you know this to being a person without thin privilege but society forces people without thin privilege since centuries to hide their bodies by curve hiding clothes. It’s not about individual struggles but it is about society and which signals we give that we say that somebody needs to hide things. It’s the same with scars or acne or cellulite: Society says it is the flaw, why ? Because old white men had decided that they don’t like it. Why are nipples of women banned from social media but nipples of men are ok? Because once upon a time old white man decided this. And I can go on and on and on. Yes it is individual decision whether you feel comfortable in your body or not. But you don’t have the opinion of how you like your body just buy your own because you don’t live in a cage without any contact to the outer world. Do you have the relationship to your beauty and your body because of society beauty standards. And so every narrative we are giving out in the word become part of society. This is why fat acceptance movement started in the 60s because they had the aim to normalise big bodies to normalise every body and every so-called flaw. And I think that the wording of this video is really problematic and really old fashioned

Girl no offense, but I don’t think you know anything about having a tummy. You keep talking about waist, but you can have a clearly defined waist & also tummy. A tummy is not about being wide from left to right, it’s about being wide from the front. As a person with a tummy from fat & inflammatory digestive issues, I can tell you that for example tucked shirts make me look twice as fat as loose untucked ones.

It shouldn’t be a new thing 🙈 it should be Normal. I am in the age when A lot of my friends became mothers and I have sent this screenshot of this video in a group with my friends on WhatsApp and everybody said: they are so sad because this is the thing we had our entire life to hide a body and to be afraid of getting bigger/softer aso 🙈 I don’t know whether this is European or German thing but this is the typical Gen X and boomer advice “ please hide your curves, nobody wants to see your belly”
