New VS Old two tone sirens on fire engines in Merseyside 🚒

A new 2021 fire engine and an older 2012 fire engine responding with two tone sirens and lights in Merseyside, UK. The newest fire engine has very different sounding two tone sirens compared with the older two tone air horns - which do you prefer? Comment below!
Both fire appliances are with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. The newest one is part of a batch of four built by Emergency One and are based at Crosby (Featured), Belle Vale, Kensington and Heswall Fire Stations.

Love how Merseyside fire brigade use their two tone horns a lot still And about which one I prefer, I personally prefer the older ones as they sound a little more classic but both are very nice

Watching classic episodes of London's Burning when they used the Dennis RS appliances, with their distinctive two tone horns gave you that scent of nostalgia, I suppose brigades have had to move with the times, but nothing ever beats that classic sound 🙂

Second one is better. Love the old style. Still anything is better than noting. Can’t beat the two tone horn. It’s effective!

The new ones sound a lot like the german Martin horns. Very similar. I like them for that matter. However, the older ones are the classic british Twos and as such they suit the british rigs much better in my mind.

Agreed - the pitch is similar to the Martinshorn, but it sounds like a two horn. The 4-horn has a different sound (which is typical for German vehicles).

Back in the mists of time Bromborough (Merseyside) fire station for a short period had 3 Dennis SS's on the run. I was at Bebington rail station when all 3 turned out on a shout. As they came under the raiway bridge the leading hand on the first pump hit the second set of two tones the noise was unbelievable. It certainly worked, the cars in the way shot off in all directions.

Exactly what I was thinking. The new thing isn't bad but seems to be an electronic replication of something between a UK two tone and a Martinhorn. Its OK, but you can't beat compressed air jobs for impact.

The new one sounds like they sound in germany and switzerland. But i prefer the older, cause it sounds like the uk two tone. Im from swizerland, so i know the new one and it's specially for me to hear the old one🙂

I'd like to see all British emergency vehicles go back to classic two tones, either pneumatic or electronic. Yankee wailers have no place in Europe.

Think you'll find the new one is the German made European ones, the Norfolk USAR vehicles made by MAN have both these and the American style wailers. The older ones are the British standard, which are sadly dying out. My father used to drive fire engines, the older ones still had a bell as a back up, but he always said the two tones had more effect.

- in answer to your question, I prefer the older ones just out of preference. But I love the fact Merseyside has several different types of two tones across different batches of pumps. 🙂

Old style where mechanical 2 tones (air driven) the new versions are through the Siren system so are electronic generated

The “old” style 2nd-interval horns are still in common use by French fire brigades.

Except it's too slow and lacks adequate sense of urgency compared to British ones.

The older two tones sound better than the new ones. The old one has a stronger sense of urgency, and it's unique to the British Isles. The new one has a more generic European sound rather than uniquely British. And unlike the genuine German Martin horns, it sounds weak and cheap. However, I'd still pick both of them over those yankee wailers.

2 tone horns bring back memories of granada police cars, Fire engines, and ambulance From the 60s and 70s And their loud you can hear them coming, not like some of the electronic yelps on todays emergency vehicles you cant hear them unless their behind You. 2 tone every time.. Mee maw.. Mee maww..

Why not? Fire stations are there for engagement purposes too. Charity car washes, fire safety visits for schoolchildren... and not to mention the fact some are staffed by the community through retained firefighters.

It's to indicate that this building also has community facilities. 'Community fire stations' have meeting rooms, safe havens and other facilities for local groups and people.

I'm an old fan of the old school two tones but can't stand the modern European style ones. No thanks. Modern whaler sirens are much better for Efad requirements.
