Until the US passed the Pure Food And Drug Act of 1906, later strengthened in 1936, it was totally legal to sell any combination of ingredients with any claim of efficacy, call it medicine and never disclose what was actually in the product.
Much of this "patent medicine" either did nothing at all and relied on the placebo effect. Some of these products really were effective but the ingredients themselves were pretty alarming: alcohol, opiates, cocaine and even radium.
US law has done much to prevent this from continuing without necessarily endangering the customer but there are still a myriad of nonsense products on the market that capitalize on these methods: homeopathics, cold remedies, etc.
The unscrupulous methods used by those olde tyme vendors are still used today, not just for cure-alls but also to sell a lot of other products - many of them targeted towards to the gun community.
We discuss this and more in this episode of InRangeTV.

War story from my Drill Sargent in 1970. At a fire base in Nam, he and his buddies were fending off an attack, using their M-16's on full auto. He said they dipped the bolts in GI Motor Oil. The 16's "ran without a fault---but smoked like hell" So, maybe use 1970's era GI Motor Oil to get all that carbon out--better than canola???

Ballistol is legitimatly a "Wizard-Oil": You can clean your gun with it, you can fix a squaky door with it, you can treat injuries with it, you can treat a sore throat with it (mixed with water), if you digest it (mixed with water) it helps with stomach problems. I havn`t tried cooking with it but Ballistol doesn`t exactly taste good so that might not be an option anyways.

Ian is right. Germany was using synthetic lubricants in their engine works in WWII, but their gun oil was supplied by KleverFabrik (makers of the commercial Ballistol.) As you probably know, Ballistol emulsifies when wet, which is why their rifles began gumming up in sub zero temps. It wasn't the cold weather itself that was the problem: it was the oil getting wet, which caused suspended solidification, which then froze up. This led to the Wermacht issuing graphite dry lube, which was supplied by Graphit Kropfmühl.

While serving in a military big no-no was running your weapon "wet" because we still use natural oil for lubrication, some strange, reddish, oil imported from Africa, I have heard that is extracted from some kind of tree, and rifles would produce a cloud of smoke while oil have been burning out. Which is potentially deadly since that cloud could reveal position of the unit to the enemy, so, anyone who would do it would clean all of the guns of the entire unit when we would get back from the range. So, yes, that is the oil burning, not the carbon leaving a gun. As for the freezing of synthetic oils, after the training I always had a can of Ballistol with me, and my weapon, M76, never jammed and it sometimes get really cold here, down to -20C° (-4F°). I also hunt, during the winter I used semi-auto shotgun, gas-operated, and never had a malfunction using Ballistol.

Pretty funny, because: Ballistol was devoleoped as gun oil AND medicine for the emperors army. They put herbs in it to "prevent infection". Even sun burn and frost bite, as they claimed...
@RockandrollNegro
@RockandrollNegro 6 жыл бұрын
Radovan, what army where you in that used this type of oil? I didn't know it was popular outside of Africa. It is called Rougoil, (Red Oil) and it comes from the Congo. It was manufactured for the French army, but I didn't think anyone still used it. It is made from Alkanet, flax oil and pine oil. We do not use it on guns anymore (except for wood staining on stocks) because it wasn't a very good oil, and because Ballistol is so easy to use. Ballistol is popular in Africa, but less as a weapon lube and more for a medicine. (I suspect that its use there is a holdover from German Afrikacorps occupation, or from the German population of South Africa.) Ballistol is actually synonymous with 'gun oil' here in the Congo, and there was a big problem in the eighties when we started getting gun oils from other countries like Browning oil and WD 40. You see, many home remedies call for gun oil as a cure. If you have stomach parasites like worms (which is very common due to the water quality) and you go to a doctor, he will give you Ballistol to drink to kill the infection. So people would see worms in their stool, and then go buy gun oil that wasn't Ballistol, and drink it and die. An old man drank an entire bottle of gun oil that was made from ammonia and he died a horrible death. So yes, I can attest to the authenticity of reporting that states Ballistol is safe to ingest and effective against infection. Many of us also use it on our dogs and cats for fleas and fur problems.

I use mobile one 5w30 synthetic for my semi auto rifles and pistols...kinda expensive for motor oil but it stays nice and viscous down to very low temps (pour point is -53c).... canola oil, on the other hand freezes at 14f, but it does have a fairly high smoke point (400f) and it tastes way better. For my bolt guns I use a touch of Lucas Oil assembly grease on the lugs and camming surfaces of the bolt. all in all about 12 dollars worth of lubes that will last basically forever.

Only a few minutes in so forgive me if you cover this but there was one blog that took a bunch of flash suppressors and tested them on the same AR-15 and found that most didn't work much better than a cheap stock A2 birdcage and in one or two cases were worse. An independent testing body for gun parts, modifications and accessories would be a good thing, it'd keep companies on their toes and consumers informed.

Two quick things. First, opinions about the grease vs oil concept. I work in a heavy industrial environment manufacturing and almost all equipment is greased very little oil used. I myself use just a small amount on my AR on the bearing points on the bolt carrier since this is the only contact points from my observation (could be wrong just what I see). Other than metal corrosion inhibiting is there any benefit to oiling the whole carrier group? Second I'm pledging to your Patron because I honestly believe you two put the best content out there. I saw only 402 are pledging I hope more follow.

ARs are actually designed so that they can be run completely dry. Many people complain about the AR "shitting where it eats but that's a crucial part of the design that enables ARs to be run dry. The carbon in the action acts as dry lubricant. I think people greatly underestimate the genius that Eugene Stoner put into that gun. I think the most genius part is that the bolt functions as a gas piston (yes ARs are actually piston driven where the gas tube acts simply as a long gas port to deliver the gas to the expansion chamber in the bolt carrier where the gas pushes the bolt and carrier in opposite directions and the heavier carrier takes the bolt with it rearward) the gas rings on an AR are essential for the gun to function because the back side of the bolt is the piston. This design is why ARs have that straight back recoil and are quite easy shooting guns.

Castor bean oil is used in 2-stroke motorcycle and kart racing engines due to it's extremely high film strength and ability to deal with high temps. It smells great too! The downside of castor oil is that it doesn't mix well with gasoline and when burned (in an engine) it leaves behind gummy deposits and tough varnish buildup. Those issues probably wouldn't occur in a firearm. Maybe we should all be using Maxima Castor 927 on some firearms.

During the Vietnam war the Vietcong were cleaning their AKs with a dirty rag and diesel. They did just fine. I put some f my older ARs aside and used sunflower oil or 0W30 motor oil. Again, no malfunctions or perceived increased wear. If I am bound for combat in arctic regions where the temps are consistently below -20F I would consider a dry lubricant or an oil specially tested by the armed forces for those conditions. Otherwise, it seems to me That those claims are like snake oil of old. As always, great work guys.

Funny you should mention SAE and gun oil, as I use 10w-40 in my AR, have been for over 5 years, and like any good oil it works well for lubricating moving parts, even when subjected to high heat. I had a bad experience with RemOil when I got my rifle, new in box, fired 20 round dry, took it home and scrubbed it thoroughly, lubed it with RemOil only to come back to it 2 months later trying to fire it but it was sticky and malfunctioning. Used motor oil ever since and the BCG has been wet to the touch for over three months, through 5 shooting sessions.

I'm sold on synthetic motor oil for the reasons it has been developed. Your gun won't reach the cyclic rate of a reciprocating internal combustion engine. I've heard that one well known company starts with methane, CH4, to make its synthetic motor oil. That just has to be the best starting point to make synthetic oil.

One Doomed Spacemarine I used to be a rapeseed breeder. I used to analyse 30000 different oil samples a year, looking for better oil properties. Also I used to run my diesel truck on it.

I like guns, I also like cast iron cookware. That smoking of fireclean is the oil "smoking" (off gassing/boiling off higher level distillates). You see this when seasoning cast iron cookware, it leaves behind a layer of polymerized oils and carbon that protect the cast iron and provided a non stick coating, great for an egg not sticking but not exactly something you want happening to the lubricating oil in your complex machine, it's the same thing as oil "gumming up". All oils will polymerize ("gum up""sludge") at a certain temp, vegetable and animal based oils do so at lower temps than petroleum, synthetic, or highly refined vegetable/animal (which are actually used commonly in industry) oils. Just look up the smoke point of your favorite motor oil. Oil is a tool, and as I've been taught, use the right tool for the job.

We only use rape seed oil for cooking. It's one of the most common vegetable oils in the UK. they grow a lot of it around North Yorkshire, huge golden fields of flowers in the early summer.

In case you were wondering the german armed forces used Ballistol from 1905-1945. ballistol.com/ After using it to clean and lubricate guns, oil the stocks, keep leather supple turns out it also works as an insect repellent, protects engines from salt in Winter and is being used for eczema by some. Universal oil indeed!

I personally use standard generic (usually outers) gun oil, or light machine oil/sewing machine oil. (both on hand for the machine shop and my leather sewing machine) I can't tell any difference between them..... Now my experience is with bolt actions and lever actions, but I always heard that the hardened steel on hardened steel in them doesn't actually need lubrication? My understanding was that the oil is pretty much just to prevent rust. Now I oil my guns, but I usually just wipe an oiled patch over the parts, then wipe it back off with a dry patch. I'm not sure if it's technically right, but it's what I learned to do, and I've never had an issue.

I don't think you'd ever see a problem from wiping the oil away or not oiling with how most people use bolt guns and lever guns, but hardened steel on hardened steel will still wear. I always oil them as I would any semiauto just to better preserve them. And it helps even more with rust

My car actually does that. The DPF checks some parameters (speed, time duration at that speed) to determine if the car is on the highway. If it thinks the car is on the highway, it will start burning off trapped Diesel pollutants from the catalytic converter. It's literally smoking itself clean :)
