I have social anxiety, so I totally get feeling socially awkward all the time... I do too, especially if have to go to an event or a birthday where I'm not going to know anyone. However, I went to a 21st on the weekend (it was my boyfriend's family friend) and although I had a massive freak out the day before (borderline panic attack thinking about all the worst case scenarios) it actually turned out being so fun! That's the thing that sucks about anxiety, it's worrying about things that haven't even happened it, that may or may not happen but our minds (at least my mind) gets me into a spiral about it. My therapist has advised me to try and focus on the here and now and encouraged me that if something does happen, you will know what to do and how to deal with it in the moment it's happening (which I do know 99.9% of the time). But sometimes it can feel so annoying when people are like "just worry about it in the moment, don't spend all this time dwelling on it" because it's like I can't control it, I can't just turn these thoughts off and I can't just turn down the volume. Sometimes my thoughts get so loud that it just feels so overwhelming and I know they're all negative and I know they're not true. But in that moment of feeling them/thinking about them it literally feels like I am sitting inside a hurricane, I can't see or hear anything else, it's just these thoughts going on around me. But I want to encourage you that anxiety, or thoughts in general just come in waves, you'll think them, feel them, maybe even have a good cry because of them, but then that wave will eventually be over. It won't last forever. Don't let a single moment or "wave" rob you of experiences, fun times and memories you will carry with you for the rest of your life. It's okay to feel anxious, but you have to ride the wave; know the horizon is just on the other side, that there are calm seas ahead and you WILL get through it. Whatever life throws at you, whatever could happen, you are stronger than you think and more capable than you believe.
