Goodbye option paralysis, hello whole new can of worms
Welcome to the show - Mick here, hello! The top line of this show is me wanting to put together a more simple pedalboard, after years of relative complexity. We explain the reason for doing that in the intro section, but what then unfolds is a kind of pinball machine of thoughts and issues. For which I should apologise…
Having watched the show back prior to upload, it dawned on me that the sketchy general narrative and incessant technical terminology will be annoying and alienating to anyone who doesn’t know me and Dan very well. But… It is what it is, and it happened as it happened so this is undoubtedly a show for the TPS faithful.
In any case… I will do a mercifully short follow-up show in the next week or two to explain what happened next, and show the final choices along with a signal path diagram and all that. Watching the show back has cemented a few choices.
I also want to say that listening back, many of the tones in this show just had waaaaay too much gain and flub. It sounded massive and exciting in the room, but in hindsight the loss of articulation, definition and harmonic interest is pretty much the exact opposite of what I’m actually going for… especially with the new/old ES-345 which feels somewhat desecrated by all that mess. It really deserves better, and again, that helps cement a few choices.
Aaaaand, we also had a serious earth problem, hence all the buzz. We’re trying to track that down, but it does rather highlight the issues arising from just chucking a few pedals on a board with no switcher and expecting it all to play nice at 105dB! Not today old friend.
So with apologies for all the apologies, I’ll say a big thank you for sticking with it, and also to Dan for indulging me. Sometimes doing shows with no preparation ends up in an interesting journey with fun discoveries. Today it was a bit of a mess. Such is life, and we move on.
One final thank you. To Thorpy, Dan Coggins and Rob Francis for all being involved in me being able to acquire this AMAZING 1965 Gibson ES-345. Holy mama.

Guys do not apologize for the long vids. You go through a lot with timestamps and labels to make it easy to skip through if your crazy. But watching you make those decisions helps us understand and hone in our our gear and taste even more. It's high quality stuff, thanks for all you do. Loved that 345. Loved the final board

I don't quite grasp what you were apologizing for. This show, as far as I comprehend it, is all about finding the right tone, experimenting with gear. At times, you explain things; sometimes, you show things. Occasionally, you delve into exploration, and we get to watch. And sometimes, we're just the fly on the wall while you're on that never-ending quest for that little extra. That is wonderful, that is, why i follow this channel. Thank you for your awesome work.

Dan, great that everything is well now! Mick, I just love the way your playing lightened up more and more as the sound was there with the desitions on pedals. And the new quitar, it light up the playing for the both of you, best thing that can happen and it really excited me as well while sound was just something else. A couple of months ago, I stripped right back to amplifier and guitar. The back to basics thing works. It allows a reset, and a reevaluation. A simple board makes sense, especially for a gig, but even for home practice. Focus on the playing, not on buttons and knobs. Love it. Also, that 345 is a thing of beauty. Well done.

Thanks guys. Possibly my favourite show. Absolutely no need to apologise. I loved getting involved. Maybe it wasn't as slick as you intended, or the sound as you envisaged, (not least the hum, rf or ground, which is annoying with the improved recording equipment), but nevertheless, I enjoyed every little bit. I loved the fact that you were repeating riffs when comparing settings, switches, routings and options on various pedals and combinations thereof. This really helps us. Sometimes when demonstrating the kind of pedals that I would be interested in, it's like you've already played them so much yourself, you seem to be getting bored. Here though, it was obvious this was the first time and indulgence was lovely to see and most welcome. We could hear what you were hearing. Especially loving the rationale of just playing, not letting distractions inhibit the wonderous and ethereal, (yes even when totally dry guitars are magical - just think of all those wonderfully different shades that you can achieve whilst playing acoustic guitars), process of making music. When those enhancement tools are in play, wow. Options are many, but they should ideally support what's already going on. Sure, a fully immersive delay almost controls you and trusting your gear is necessary sometimes and I still have my reservations about too many choices. Many PA guys I speak get a bit worried when a guitarist turns up with more kit than the drummer. When one arrives with guitar and amp, or guitar and box, they get excited that they'll be a lot less issues during set-up.

For me, anything to encourage the relationship between the band and the sound guys or other performers, is beneficial. No one want the hear a grown man cry because there's no room on stage for all this kit or if they need a certain threshold for everything to work 'properly' because the tone won't be right below 91db ..... but the in house the decibel meter turns red at 90, meaning everyone needs to turn down or the fuse cuts out! I love it when things are straightforward and you have to play, exposed without a crutch. It's a tiny bit like when I turn up to group cycling rides, on my cheap steel bike without all the latest paraphernalia. I'm not deliberately trying to look cool, nor do I act pretentious with a massive smug smile. Well, I do look and act like a cock most of the time, so I have no right...but I do enjoy beating the other modern, lightweight gear crazy, techno sensor laden, born again, full lycra clad cyclists, up hills. It's a similar story as arriving to gigs, one journey from car with guitar, amp and lead, all set to play in minutes, with one plug socket required, having time to help pack stuff away, grab drinks for the crew, running cables etc until we're ready to tune and sound check. Simples!!

Great episode! Great minds think alike. I consolidated my pedalboard based on our current set list. And lo and behold 5 pedals is all I need. My gigs are all in mono so that helped with my decision making. Dan stay well and cheers for an awesome recovery.

No apologies needed, this is why we are here, awesome episode! Thank you! The 345 was a slice of heaven. Things that I took away from this, based on the limited YT audio. The Tube Driver sounded great on its own, but not on this board. The Juggler V3 sounds amazing. I agree with Dan that the Evermore is an always on pedal. My personal preference was the Page over the 808, it just sounded a little warmer to me with the Juggler. On the wet side I really liked the Megabyte, but I preferred the Delay Llama, there was just something about it I liked better. Also, I would really love to hear Dan’s old CE1 through this rig.

Brilliant. This felt like a classic TPS episode. Of the many possible comments, here are two. First, I was looking away when the Delay Llama came on and my head literally snapped back to the screen. What's that?! Second, which wasn't the point of the episode at all, was that when the 345 came out, both of you allowed yourselves to swim in it. It wasn't comparing micro-tweaks to a pedal's EQ or something. It was yielding to the inspiration of that (yes, new) guitar. You both allowed the inspiration to take the reins. So whatever the source, a new guitar, pedal, amp or combination, your playing was inspired and inspiring. Cheers, guys.

Love this episode, really cool to see the thought process and simplifying. I’m a big fan of a good simple setup and while I sometimes let things get out of hand and go bigger, it’s never long before I downsize again. Fuzz, couple overdrives, delay and modulation can usually get it done.

I just watched the video where Jack brought his amps to the show where Dan's two tiered board .. I just wanted to say thank you for all that effort. I was introduced to The Golden, The G3 and many other things that expanded my knowledge a great deal. So again, thank you so much! I just play through a like new Mesa single rectifier, a couple nice pedals for sustain and verb, going through the effects loop. 6L6s and 12ax7s. Not even on a stage, but playing along with records like George Harrison's All Things Must Pass..the outtakes portion, which I enjoy playing along with. Either that or Pat Matheny 's "Group" record with Jaco on it.

I appreciate the direction you're going here. I just recently put my giant pedal board that resembles the console of the Starship enterprise on the back burner for now and have gone to a smaller board with a dual drive, boost, one wobble pedal, one delay and a whammy ricochet and find that I'm making more music rather than just sitting and twiddling with knobs

I was 7 minutes into this video and already so pumped. I’ve been missing, a bit, the thoughts and musings of Mick and Dan as you nerd out on pedals, but more importantly, how you’re thinking about them working together in a rig. It was Friday. It was a long week, and this is exactly what I needed. Happy 2024. Looking forward to all the TPS it brings.

It’s funny. I used to be a one amp simple board player. But then I got addicted to this show. Now I run a wet dry rig with more gain stages than i can handle. Keeley comp, tumnus, bonsai, KoT, carpe diem. And that’s all before the wet dry split. Thanks a lot guys. Lol.

This was a great show. I'm working on building a pedal board and it's tough to make decisions about which pedals are useful to me. Thank you Dan, may you continue to heal. I had a thing removed from my head too. My dad had the same. He called them potatoes. ( we were farmers) All the best

Thanks guys. Dan, I hope you are well, some sublime playing on Mick's 345. I enjoyed it Mick, the getting back to basics idea is pertinent to me. My board has caused some issues over the last month or so and I have been seriously thinking about reducing down, almost exactly as you said. You played some lovely stuff too. Finally, that 345, what a beautiful tone. Congrats, you must be like a dog with two tails.

Listened to this on tinpot earlier buds during the commute, then on closed-back noise cancelling headphones. Finally on the living room TV. The recorded sound quality is remarkable - well batted Mr Taylor. Very much looking forward to hearing the first band session of the year - it’s going to be very interesting to hear all the ‘new’ non-digital hardware in that scenario. You go from strength to strength, bravo.

Oh man. That 345 would be the death of anyone. I can now see why Dan was so overwhelmed on Mondays show. The board is epic, loved the video. Please don't apologiese for these sorts of videos, they're fab! To me, as a viewer who really started loving the show in COVID, these are CLASSIC TPS episodes that experience the minutiae of why you guys choose what. Much love!

Looking forward to this one, ive been downsizing my own pedalboard recently and trying to see what i can get out of just s few pedals and my guitar's controls but the feeling of needing another fuzz or drive on the board is hard to ignore 😂
