A number of you already guessed the nature of my big New Years announcement. Yes, after 32 years in this English Tudor house (the fairytale) we are moving! Share the bittersweet emotions of one door closing and the excitement of a new door…many doors…opening. Of course, I want to share the process of starting a new garden, decorating a new home, and discovering a new neighborhood right along with me. Follow along as I make blunders, poor decisions, and hopefully a lot of wise ones as well.
Welcome to my storybook English cottage.

This video helped me so much. My husband of 55 yrs died 6 months ago after a long illness. Have lived here 46 yrs, 7 acres, many garden beds, high maintenance situation, and I am mid 70s. My kids and grandkids also live 2000+ miles away. My husband and I did many improvements and planted trees, plants, etc. So many memories! To move or stay has been a huge struggle for me so I am taking time to decide what to do. This really helps me focus. Thank you for sharing.

I’m not a fan of open floor plans and so much white. I loved your other home, it was so cozy and inviting. Your garden was what I tried to achieve in mine but never quite accomplished the look! But I’m definitely going to keep watching your channel. Looking forward to seeing how you decorate your new space and garden. Congratulations on your new home! Best of everything to you in 2023!

There are times that letting go of a good thing is necessary to achieve something better! I am 62 and have moved from several homes and gardens that I put my heart and soul into. It has always ended being a blessing! My garden now is a smaller scale but gives me the ability to enjoy it without being a slave to my garden! I want to experience new adventures and not be shackled to my home and garden! My heart is empathetic for you. I am confident this will be the best decision for you , Hubs ,(and Stewart’s lighting)! I am so excited to be a part of this adventure and your upcoming videos! Also, a great closet for your clothes thrifting and daily outfits that I love! Be blessed! 2023 is going to be amazing!

I didn't think I would need a box of tissues as I heard your news - but I felt the pain and joy of the bittersweet decision it is/was. (My husband and myself are 72 and 68 and I think this really hit home.) Johnny's reading and love of the family home steeped in memories was beautiful. I hope you can frame it somewhere in your new home to remind you of the beautiful family you and hubs have created and where you came from. Your new home is just outstanding and one can easily see why you and your family love it. Each room held a surprise but when you got to the Great Room - I think we all gasped like your daughter-in-law did. Linda, you are a brave woman for sharing this news and a very wise woman knowing that it was time to make a change for yourself and hubs. I couldn't be happier for you as you create the space to fit your lifestyle and future plans for entertaining. Last, but not least, Stewart's support does not go unnoticed and just think - he gets more... light!! ❤🌻🌳

There are no coincidences in life and hearing you give us the reasons why you decided to move really hit home. This year I lost my dad and a big decision was whether to sell my childhood home. I have struggled and questioned whether my decision to sell is the right one. But when you said, “I want a less complicated life so I can live a bigger life” I know my decision to sell is the right one. You put into words what my heart was feeling. Thank you Linda.

Linda every time we’ve moved I’ve thought of it as an adventure. Over 59 years of marriage we’ve moved 13 times. We lived in our last home 17 years and we built that house. As we got older our son suggested we needed to move closer to him. We are in a small ranch now but we have a big yard and I’ve had so much fun watching your videos and creating a beautiful space. So I am excited to see what your future holds. You are a delight and you and Stewart just make my life so joyful. Happy New Year!

Congratulations Linda. You hinted at this move earlier this year. I downsized five year ago to a cozy cape. Although I am still adjusting, having less house, land and, expense is liberating. My small city lot has zero landscaping and barely any grass in 2018. This is the year that I fine tune and fully enjoy the fruits of my labor

I'm not gonna lie, I shed a little tear when you announced you were moving. I love your old house so much! But I completely understand your reasoning for it, and you certainly found yourself an adorable new cottage. I'm excited to see all that you will do with it both inside and out. You'll definitely be able to apply a fresh perspective since it's such a different space, although it still has a lot of classic details that go along with your style, I think. I wish you and hubs lots of luck in this new chapter, and I'm excited to follow along on your journey.💗🌱

I must say I had a good cry, especially motivated by your son’s heartfelt and eloquent words. I have always wanted a two-story house with French doors and fireplaces, all wrapped up with memories. Your tours transported and inspired me to create and express my individuality in my house. My walls have soaked up good memories for my children..BUT, I can also relate to this stage in life. Our children are grown and do not live in our small town. We have three grandchildren. While our house is large enough for us, when they all come home...it is way too small. I am 68 and my husband is 69...life is full of changes and we are constantly contemplating so many decisions...retirement, our business that we have spent 43 years building...so much of our identity is wrapped up in the life we have built. I love your new house. I admire your bravery. You have given me a lot to think about.

Linda, while it will be sad to say goodbye to your beautiful home and gardens, I completely understand why you’re moving. My husband and I just moved from New Mexico to Eufaula Oklahoma. It was so hard to leave the home where our children grew up, and our grandchildren were welcomed as well as the gardens I created and tended. Our reasons for the move were almost exactly the same as yours. It’s been 6 months since the move and I couldn’t be happier. I wish you much happiness and many Blessings in your new home.

Even though I knew it was to happen, because I saw a video after this, it made me cry. I'm EXCITED to see the change, but, will miss the old. Johnny's talk was beautiful.. loved it. So on I go watching, feeling excitement and sadness. More on the excitement. I am almost 72 and about 9 years ago we moved to a smaller home and a one level. My grandparents home was filled to the hilt, when they passed. And, like you, we had quite the chore cleaning it out before sale. We knew in our upper 60's that we needed a one level (husband hip issues) and with that we purged.... asking children first if they wanted anything. I lost my junior acre yard that I also did all myself. I have a small backyard and front yard, but, I love it and can keep up with it. It was sadness for me the first couple years until I could see things happening with my planting. In our old neighborhood, it was changing. this neighborhood has a lot of one levels so many, many retirees are around us. And, they are lovely. I know you will make new friend and have new adventures with your move and I hope I am there to watch. New home is lovely.. can't wait to watch it fill up with furniture and look like your beautiful decorated home. Congratulations to you and your family. love, hugs, prayers.

Hi Linda. I love your fairytale house, but I feel you’ve made the right decision and you are very responsible and considerate parent. My husband is trying to manage his aging parents that live in a house that is too big for them and with way too many things in it. It is very stressful for him and his siblings and a source of many arguments because my in laws refuse to compromise and accept they can’t maintain a large cluttered home anymore. The maintenance of taking care of them in their large home eats away at precious time from everyone else that just wants to live their lives, raise their kids all while trying to maintain their own households. I wish you and hubs many memories in your new cottage.

Your toast had me in tears ❤️ I'm in the middle of a career change. This entire past year I've ridden the rollercoaster of emotions - grief, doubt, anger, inspiration, and excitement. In some ways it's been like losing a close loved one. Things like houses and careers become part of our identity, and sometimes life throws you for a major loop that sets you to questioning everything. The bottom line becomes: what do you want for your life? If the house or the job doesn't serve anymore, then yes, it's time to go. Easier said than done, though 🤪 I'm right there with you, Linda, and am so glad you found your next home!

I think you are making a good decision . I am 92 and made many decisions to modify my home in 2004. Ripped out bathrooms back to studs to make handicap accessible, 3 ft doors instead of the old narrow doors., handrails at all steps in yard. We are sure enjoying the convenience now. Our house was already one story. I can't count the number of my friends who have fallen on steps and in baths inside their homes, leading to broken hips, legs, and hospitalation and nursing homes. Your new home is beautiful and light and spacious. Can't wait to see how you decorate it. Look forward to seeing what you do with the yard, too. I have been in my house for 71 years, built in 1888, we've made many alterations.

how very exciting ... bittersweet for sure leaving all those memories, but you will always carry them in your heart and in the heart's of your children. When you know it's time to go, you know and even though it's hard you will see, in the near future, it was the right decision. Time to let a new family move in and create their version of home. After 35 years, we moved over 2 years ago and I have never looked back. Congrats !!!!

Bravo!! Brave girl. The new home is perfect for the next season of your lives!! Perfect!! We moved from New York State to my 5 generation family farmhouse (3,000 sq ft) in Michigan when we were 60 (retired early). We've never looked back - and actually after 10 years we are considering our next move to a smaller place :)

When I saw you standing in the empty living room, my heart sank. I knew it was coming eventually, but this still hit me. Johnny's words , had my hand on my chest, and tears in my eyes. Nothing will ever feel like the home you grew up in. Especially when your boys were blessed to be born and raised here. But I realize, as we get older, a one story is the most sensible home. The cottage is gorgeous.... The brick exterior and diamond pane windows gives the charm I associate with you. So although I will forever miss your old home, I will look forward to seeing you make this yours. I already loved your wood bookcases in the great room . I can't wait to join you on the journey .

This is just what I needed to see to confirm that I am not alone in making the decision to move into a more manageable home. We’ll go north from NY to NH to be near one of our sons and leaving this house will be a challenge in many ways. Thank you again for sharing your personal journey as it is helpful and reassuring to so many including myself. Your son’s sentiments were so touching that I must admit made me shed a few tears. I am looking forward to seeing more of your transition and creations in your new home. Congratulations!🥰

It was meant for me to see this video…. My husband and I have lived in the same house for some 35 years now. In fact, we both grew up just down the road from our home. It was a fabulous home and community to raise our two children in; such wonderful memories here! Both children are now grown, live hours away and have families of their own. Like you, our community is changing….many of our friends have moved away; most of our families have as well. Now in our 60’s, we feel it’s time to make a move ourselves. The decision, or I should say indecision, has been gut wrenching….how could we leave the community we grew up in, that we raised our children in and how could we leave the friends that are still here….yet, we feel it is time. Our son would love for us to move close to him and his family; so for now, that is the plan….remember the indecision?? We continue to pray for guidance!

I am so excited for you! We are at the point where are youngest is finishing college. Our house and yard we perfect for our family of four, but now that we are going to be empty nesters....I find myself, as you described, spending all of my time cleaning and keeping up with this good size house and gardens....which I love. I long for smaller space, my husband isn't ready.

I love all your wisdom !!! Yes! after 34 yrs., of course you have to question if it is the right thing to do. All your reasons are valid and well thought out. Many of those reasons were the same for my move from an older home that I lived in for many years (25). Thank you for reminding me that I did the right thing too. It is funny how we are happy about the new possibilities but it kinda gets ya ...it is only natural. Older homes are a LOT of upkeep and a lot of figuring out how to get around odd spaces. As we get older we do need easier. How fun it will be to configure your new garden...and we will be right with you!!! Your son wrote a beautiful letter. You may be leaving the old home but you are not leaving your memories...they are forever in your heart. CONGRATS!!!! The new home is Beautiful!!!!

So happy for y'all! My husband and I have been toying with the same decision, we've lived here 31yrs and haven't quite found the other home (we may build). We've lived in a 1930's shotgun house that we have remodeled and added on to and remodeled some more until it's more of a Cape Cod-ish style that I love. Lots of light (I have that same requirement as you and not because I have a Stuart), and perfect (for me) but needing/wanting a different configuration in the second half of life. It's difficult to decide. But I do thank you for your channel that I've come across in the past few years to help me with our outdoor garden ideas!!! Between you and Garden Answer, I'm gradually becoming a gardener!

I can totally relate to all you’ve gone through to affirm your move! My hubby and I moved from Oregon to Idaho just over 2 years ago, joining our kids as they made the decision that Boise would be their new home and they asked us to come be with them! Turns out we arrived before them! Leaving Portland Or. was already on our horizon but it has taken us awhile to know we have made the right choice. Aging is a huge consideration! The home we bought with the idea that we might have our kids living with us turned out to be a much bigger home than we planned so we may have another house in our future as we plan to age in place !
