jazzmanjoe100 Well have only a few LPS stashed with my brother in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. One of them is "Chicago And All That Jazz" one of the final coming together of the olde Chicagoans: Condon, Teagarden, Bud Powell, Pee Wee Russell, Bob Haggard, Gene Krupa, Joe Sullivan!!! Some of those tracks can now be retrieved on uTube. "After You're Gone" and "Wolverine Blues" are just a few of timeless versions of this Jass!!

Excellent musicians these all are, without exception. I thought this was all top quality, and never did I have any complaints during this excellent program !!! For me, the hands-down highlights were Ken Peplowski's solo feature, with trio, on "China Boy" and his solo on "Riverboat Shuffle." I had heard of him as a tenor saxist in the last big band Benny Goodman led for his final televised special for PBS in November, 1985, and I enjoyed Ken P. 's playing then, and many times since, since I had someone convert my treasured old VHS tape to DVD. But here, this version of "China Boy" is a big surprise, because instead of a Bixian treatment, we get a tribute to Benny!!!! I put all my expectations aside and never made any comparisons with Benny Goodman while I listened--not once. I was able to enjoy if for what it is, which is the one of the biggest kinds of musical ''kicks'' a person can have. One can listen to certain jazz tunes and certain famous jazz solos again and again, but there is no way to describe my ecstasy watching Peplowski's flying in action. As a classical clarinetist myself, I really appreciate and admire the digital dexterity and breath control that requires. It is fortunate for the sake of his superb clarinet playing that, by the time of this concert, Ken P. didn't have to contend with the long shadow cast by Benny Goodman. Thank goodness for occasions lide this where he was able tod shine as a clarinetist. Obviously he would not be featured on clarinet in any ensemble with Benny at the helm. I am always gratified to see modern-day musicians not only committed to d in playing traditional jazz. I am also deeply admiring of the fact that they can still find fresh and novel things to say on tunes like these that have been played innumerable times. By far this is one of the most musical groups, and one of the most faithful to the spirit of the great Bix. This is also one of the freshest-sounding, as they do not sound as if they are self-consciously trying to duplicate the original recordings, Thank you for a not only greatly enjoyable but also memorable video. This has been my best look ever at the long-obsolete C-melody saxophone, and also one of the best views I have ever had of the similarly scarce bass saxophone.

Yes, this is a wonderful performance in my opinion too.. One I will be playing the rest of my life. What separates the so-so musicians in my opinion from the "greats" when this style of music is played with all its counter-melodies is when everyone doesn't "step" on the others' melody line. The late stuff Eddie Condon played with his group exemplified this professionalism in playing. Hope many realize for themselves that this is a memorable performance.....

Thank you for such virtuoso playing and DAMN you for reminding me that I got a lot more to do, even after 50 years of playing around UK, EU and once in USA. These guys are the best band I have ever heard. I used to see them on Long Island in the 1990s and they played a variety of songs. This really updates some of the Bix Beiderbecke material for modern audiences. The players are all top notch and they really capture the spirit of the music as it was played on those early 78 rpm records. Thanks for posting this video.

glad to inform you this bit of sadness (parents not playing recordings of Bix) is disputed strongly in the Jean Pierre Lion biography. He quotes closer sources to the effect these were Bix's collection, mostly of classical recordings by Debussy, Stravinsky and others.

How could anyone describe any of the music here as "inappropriate" or " over energetic" just because it opened the concert with a blast? It's not like these guys were going to run out of steam on the second number - they kept up the pace throughout! I would suggest not much careful listening and a little hostility crept in to this critique! It was, in fact a truly wonderful and enjoyable concert! JazzmanJoe deserves special credit for the display of restraint in his "apology".
