Norteños have a policy of no red on red. Meaning Norteños don’t set trip on one another. However sureños from southern Cali don’t have that policy in the streets. They set trip on each other. Remember in So Cal. There are no norteño hoods. Now there are south siders in parts of Nor Cal. But they are referred to as upstaters or plásticos (fakes). Since they claim Northern Cali hoods. Plásticos is used by both Norteños and sureños from Los Angeles area. There are various reasons why there are south siders in Northern Cali. One is the the movie American Me, another sureños is more mainstream (it’s what is depicted on tv, movies etc.) another reason is because norteños for a time would call young Mexicans nationals scraps. So in turn many of those youngsters who were being picked on for just being from Mexico but not Mexican-American began to create sureño gangs in Northern Cali. Other ways would be some LA sureños would move to northern Cali and start sur clicks. I’m from Salinas and let me tell that Salinas is dangerous place. Especially for young Chicano and innocent bystander. The city is overwhelmingly a Norteño city.
