The Mets were a very good team in the 80s. They had amazing players.

Remember watching this whole 3-game series on my old childhood B&W 13" TV (I was 10). The next night, Mike Torrez inadvertently beaned Dickie Thon, from which it took Thon years to recover.

i remeber this series was on wor-tv and i saw thon get hit in the eye evem thogh thon made it back he was nowhere near the same thon was on verge of being better than ozzie smith because thon was going to hit around 20 homers but thon deserves lots of credit for making it back from a really violent eye injury

I have nothing against Rafael Santana, but I wish the Mets had kept Jose Oquendo. Great fielder who learned to play other positions, too with St. Louis.
@rustykuntz942 жыл бұрын
Oquendo was very young (19/20) in his 2 years with the Mets in 83 & 84. I think cause they had 2 other shortstops in Santana & Gardenhire and both were light hitting Jose was expendable. Also they ended up acquiring Howard Johnson before the 85 season who played 3rd and short. I know what you mean however as Oquendo became a real Jack of all trades player w St Louis for a decade starting in 85.

@ 3:02 the first Ralph-ism! Shame what happened to Thon the next night. Big difference in the graphic font look from what was used for home game broadcasts that year. Ralph with the nautical weather terms. By '84, 'Fat' Jack Fisher really lived up to that moniker. In '84 MLB tried to have non-dome northern teams open on the road in domes or less volatile weather areas to reduce the threat of cold/snow etc. before 4/10 with a few exceptions. It made sense, but with the Yanks rough start Steinbrenner made so much noise condemning it the scheduling pattern was abandoned in '85. Ralph could give Yogi a run for his money when it came to faux pa's malapropisms etc.. @ 1:27:07 McCarver makes a good point about catching technique. Jones lasted till the end of July. Country Joe doesn't look overstuffed in the homeplate equipment as he does now.

I don't notice a Ralph-ism where you mentioned, Wiedep. What was it? I listened over and over, and the only thing I noticed was that Kiner said a pitcher's earned run average and left out the decimal point. But HERE'S the Ralph-ism that I noticed--- it's right as he's reading the sponsors at the beginning. Listen, starting at the 2:47 mark, and what he says about Ivory Soap!
