@@johnfischer_2 lol I was thinking the same! My thoughts were why would you get a grilled cheese out of all the American diner foods BUT it's not as common of a food for them so I completely understand wanting to try the actual American version in a diner.

That was driving me nuts, watching the three of them eat it with a knife and fork. Then Denz picked it up and I was like, "You GO Denzie!" Every diner is unique in their offerings, it seems and that's the wonder of eating in them. They all have the "usual," good burgers and shakes, and the cook can always get your eggs just how you like them, but then they have their own quirky dishes that are just so good!

@amyscrazybeautifullife3569 lol to be fair, a well-made grilled cheese can be spectacular... delicious perfectly toasted bread (not wonderbread), a perfect blend of cheeses in abundance, just the right amount of salted quality butter. It can knock your socks off and actually be worth the price.

I love the idea of you guys making a diner. You don’t need a load of dishes on the menu just the ones you do great and the people will keep coming back. That’s why diners last here in America and the new generations take over for the older ones. Atlanta already has a love for cooking and you have the memorabilia to decorate the locations. 🇺🇸 🤍 🇳🇿

As a long time New York diner and deli breakfast cook, the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had were at a place where we cubed the potatoes, then cooked them most of the way through with finely diced red and green bell peppers, onions, olive oil, salt, pepper and a LOT of Spanish paprika. Then once everything was pretty cooked we would mix them all together in a giant bowl to make sure every piece of potato was coated in all those amazing flavors and then put them in a large covered bin to marinate and soak in all that flavor overnight in the refrigerator. the next day we would just cook them to order on the flat top grill and they were out of this world amazing.

Historically each immigrant group in NY would usually specialize in a specific business/field and the Greeks were/are BIG in diners. they’re unfortunately beginning to go the way of the dinosaur post covid, but growing up after goin out really late at night after drinking with friends in the city a 24/7 diner was ALWAYS the move if not dollar pizza. I’m glad you all did your due diligence got the true experience. If you ever come back, you should try getting out to Queens and Brooklyn it has a lot more of the old school NY vibe relative to Manhattan and the food is some of the best in the city.

In 1992, I drove from Auckland to Wellington. Took the Picton ferry to Nelson. Then down to Christ Church for a flight to Sydney. My take on New Zealand at that time was: I found it very provincial and reminded me of the 1950s. It was very comfortable and relaxed. Very provincial. That was my first exposure to a NZ cooked breakfast. There were no choices. Just a cooked breakfast.

Such a joy to see this. We took a family vacation to NYC in 2019 and this reminded me of my lunch at a classic delicatessen eating a Reuben sandwich. I have to say food in NYC is among the best anywhere in the US.

I've too have wanted to open a diner but that only does breakfast and lunch, and I also want to deliver breakfast the way restaurants do dinner. I've woken up in the morning so many times wishing someone would just deliver a hot breakfast to my door. I've also thought about a food truck for breakfast that I could park in various places close to neighborhoods where people could walk up and get a hot breakfast. Watching you all has fired up my motivation. I think I'll go make breakfast. 😃

We used to live across the street from a Perkos Coffee Shop that served breakfast all day. On special days like my birthday or Mother's Day,, my husband would call our orders in and then walk across the street to pick up eggs Benedict, biscuits and gravy; waffles or whatever instead of trying to cook since I'm the cook and he get freshly baked cinnamon rolls or blueberry crepes for his birthday. It's so nice when someone else cooks for your birthday.😊

I don't think that's true, Nadine....we drink coffee a million different ways! Whether you call them pancakes, hotcakes or griddlecakes depends a lot on what part of the country you're from. With those potatoes in that last dish, my guess is that they par-boil them in a seasoned water for that "Marinated" flavor, and then deep fry or pan fry them to finish.

Yeah, I thought that was strange when she said that. The only people I know who take their coffee black are people in the military/veterans. My dad was in the navy and said that he learned to drink black coffee because the creamer wasn’t good. Though, I’m sure it may have been improved since when he served.

Most people I know drink coffee black, once in a while some creamer or condensed milk but that's more of a dessert. When I drank coffee I also preferred it black ☕️ I've only ever had a couple of friends or co-workers that go for coffee mixes which is fine, coffee is delicious no matter what!

Diners were always family businesses, often featuring family recipes, lots of home-style foods. Today's diners are an institution, "ordinary" family foods done up right. Our local diner is "the" local hangout - everybody goes there, and if you've been there in the past year, the staff remembers you and how you like your pastrami sandwich.
