For Courtney, a little background on this particular show, This was the 60th anniversary show of the Blue Devils organization, hence all the references to diamonds. The recorded vocal at the beginning ("Ladies and gentlemen, the corps on the field" and the end "Concord Blue Devils" is a recording of the late Jerry Seawright -- director of the corps from it's inception until the end of the 1983 season -- announcing the corps at it's very first competition after adding bugles around 1970. They'd been a drum and bell corps prior to that. You're looking at the end result of maybe half a million man hours of work, and yes, it IS fun. A HELL of a lot of work, but fun!

This is the content I came for. I was hoping someone would give a nod to the history. All of the little Easter eggs from previous shows and BD history, along with the (not so) subtle nod to corps evolution with the show name and Butterflies everywhere. I really wish the multi-can didn't cut away from the guard cocoons.🤣

Just some background info on this video: Whoever gets first place at World Championships does an encore performance of their show after scores are announced just for fun. This was the encore. That's why this one is so laid back, we're messing around and the stands are so empty. Most people leave after scores are announced. If you want to see the "normal" version of the show performed seriously and precisely, search "Blue Devils 2017" Or "Blue Devils 2017 Finals". You might not find Finals footage, but you'll find other performances from the tour that year. Glad you liked it!

It's magical. Having been a member of the Madison Scouts in 1994 I can attest to how difficult it is to do this. The rehearsal, the tour, the constant rush to get tit the next show, unpack, warm up, perform, pack up, get on the bus, and hit the road again.... it's Hard. Capital H. And that doesn't even speak to the difficulty of the shows themselves. They're in a whole other galaxy by comparison to anything similar. The crowd reactions are one thing. Seeing the entire audience leap to ther feet and cheer makes it worth it there and then. But it's reactions like this one - coming to DCI "cold", with no knowledge of the activity or what it is about and being left actually speechless, that underlines what DCI is. It's joy. Joy to be human, joy to be here and now, at this place and time. Joy to perform, joy to watch, joy to share. It's joy. Thank you, Courtney, for starting my day with such a great example of what it's all about.

So this activity of the marching performing arts is called Drum Corps International (DCI), marching music major league! Yes participants in various organizations come from all over the world to push their musical journey while traveling all over the U.S.A, Canada, etc during summer months competing at adjudicated events that conclude at the Drum Corps International World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana (Lucas Oil Stadium home of the NFL Indianapolis Colts). Members from each corps range from ages 14-21 (22 depending on birthday). DCI is divided into 2 divisions World Class which is the video you watched of the very accomplished Blue Devils also primarily a division with more college performers and Open Class which has more high school performers. These participants work extremely hard too perfect their show day-night with an average of 16-18 hrs day busting their butts outside no matter the weather but the work is soooooo worth it when you see the crowds reaction while feeling like a rock star performing with your brothers & sisters on the field. DCI teaches each of its participants so many incredible values about life, music, character, integrity, compassion, empathy, fight/drive, accountability, etc. More importantly, shine a bright light on some of the most amazing musical talents this planet has too offer! I am an extremely proud 9-year veteran of DCI which saved my life from suicide when I was a young teen. That is how much this activity means to me, I'm living proof of how the activity can turn your life around!

Soooo glad you've finally discovered Drum Corps. And as impressive as it is to see these corps online or on KZfaq, nothing compares to seeing it live. You will feel the sound wash over you. Seriously, if you ever visit the states, endeavor to seek out a stadium hosting a show. My first was the semifinals and finals in 2002 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. It was life changing. The season starts in June and ends in early August. I go usually to the Eastern Classic in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Every corps performs over 2 days. The Finals have been held lately at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. See it live. You'll never go back!

There were a number of callbacks in the show...the solo guys in the very beginning were playing clips from earlier winning programs. The marching at the very beginning...how many people notices that their HEELS hit the yard lines, not the toes? VERY old school. And i can tell you that when they added the Pegasus Wings closer to the end of the season, all us 80s alums freaked out (maybe the 07 alums as well). I remember actually yelling 'WE HAVE WINGS!" the first time I saw it and could not really explain to my wife the significance. Those kinds of callbacks always get me, whether it's the Ode to Joy quote at the end of 07 BD, the Send in the Clowns quote from the end of 17 Santa Clara Vanguard, the Conquest stabc every year from Boston Crusaders, etc. You have to love it when a corps honors it's history in performance.

I was lujcky enough to be trained by some of the staff of the Concord Blue Devils. This is months and months of work that these kids put into a 14 minute show. They are the elite of the elite, and this event is what determines is the World Champion. You witnessed a bunch of bandmates 21 years or younger, fulfilling a dream in musical performance. Prior to this event, there is a long lead up of practice to get the show ready, then months of travel and competing to determine what needs tweaking. Finals week determines who goes onto the last night of Finals. That moment when you started clutching your heart, is exactly what this art is meant to do. These kids spend sometimes 16+ hours a day perfecting their show for the audience. They are perfectionists, and fianls week almost always involves last minute changes to get more flare and energy into the end of the show. My wife and I were lucky enough to attend the DCI Finals in Pasadena, California, back in 2007. The Blue Devils won, and I ran into so many old friends from my Community College Band as they were getting to do their encore performance. It is a magical experience, indeed. I hope you get to go some day, and I'd love to see your reaction.

Definitely look up more Drum Corps International videos. And YES, it's even more amazing sitting in the stands watching a competition. And LOUD!!! These competitions last all day long, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a lot of videos from the past. DCI got started in the mid-1970s, if I'm remembering right. By the time I got into high school marching band in the early 1980s, DCI competitions were already a really big deal for "band people." Glad to see you enjoyed the video!

Courtney, welcome to an activity called Drum & Bugle Corps. This has existed in the US and Canada for many decades. I am a Blue Devil, but not one that you watched. I marched with the Concord Blue Devils for four of my teen years, 1974 - 1977. I am now 62. This activity existed for many decades even before I did this. The Blue Devils have won more Drum Corps International Championships than any other corps. You stated that you would like to attend a competition like this, and you can, but not this year. DCI has shut down all drum corps activity during 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic. For future years you can find the calendar for DCI shows on the DCI web page dci.org, and select the schedule & tickets tab. I strongly suggest you attend the international championship which is held in Indianapolis in mid August. This is the stadium you saw in the above video. You can also obtain a great many videos of past championships, and can even find many of them online. If you have any questions, please PM me, and I will be happy to assist.

I've watched a few of your reactions now, but since this is the first time you saw DCI I'll put this here. I would venture a guess to say about 60% of us who were band geeks have it in our heads that we join marching band as a precursor to join a professional band. For brass and drumline, DCI is like the gold standard of Competitive Marching. They used to set a block of time aside on Public Channels to show them, but I haven't seen them shown lately. I was mainly a Trumpet player, and had it in my head to join DCI (particularly the Blue Devils) when I was like 19-20. I ended up joining the military instead at 19 and it all fell through. I ended up in the Navy Band for a year while going through training, and still hold DCI skills in high regard. I'm glad you are so into this, it's a long standing tradition in America to have Drum and Bugle Corps. Congrats on your good tastes :) I have seen one DCI band live (Blue Devils) and performed in multiple marching band competitions from middle school to college and it is a completely overwhelming experience to have the wall of sound (The Wall) hit you when you are just 100 ft away. It goes through your whole body when brass wails and drums kick. But in my opinion, the best feeling comes from when everyone cuts off a note at the same time and you get that echo/reverb that bounces off the stadium.

I usually don't comment on videos, but I was very impressed with how perceptive you were about what you were seeing. So glad that someone from outside the activity can recognize and appreciate it for what it is. There are currently 45 of these groups active within the sanctioning body Drum Corps International (DCI). Shows are held all across the US and Canada each summer with the World Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana in early August every year. Unfortunately this summer's tour has been cancelled but keep your eyes out for the 2021 tour. This is currently my favorite show of all time because it's a love letter to the activity and a celebration of how it has developed over the last several decades. Glad you enjoyed it!

Hey Courtney. So glad you discovered and actually enjoyed this. I'm from Maryland and live in Christchurch now. I used to do this activity way back when. I played snare drum and tenor drums. My ex is from Christchurch and never heard of drum corps until we met. I took her to DCI Finals in Denver in 2004. It was her first live performance. She was absolutely blown away by it. You need to experience this LIVE. There are no videos that really bring you the total experience......if you have the opportunity, definitely go to a world championship!

Might’ve been mentioned before, but also the most of the people right on the sideline cheering on the drum corps are staff members that taught and built lifelong bond with the members pouring their hearts out that year. With the exception of dci media staff, judges on the sideline where they’re stationed, and some official, that’s the corps volunteers and staff clapping 3 feet from them and what a feeling that must be.

I never competed at this level or anything, just did marching & concert band in high school. But it was also the time when I was the MOST fit of my entire life. I remember years ago watching a short documentary around the drum corp marching competitions and part of it was about some people pushing to get it considered an actual sport like any other for school credits and the like. So they had one of the drummers (because could really do it with anyone using any of the other instruments) wear sort of a portable stress test kit: mask measuring breathing and oxygen usage, heart monitor, etc. The results were around the same as those of a competition marathon runner. Only he wasn't just running in a straight line so to speak. Remembering and performing the choreography and music on top of the physical workout... Mad respect for everyone who's ever done this!

Courtney, as you may know, I'm from Rockford, IL--home of the Phantom Regiment; their style has always been classical. The Blue Devils, however, have always been jazz. Just as a sidelight, their home base is Concord, CA, which is in the San Francisco area. Yes, it is Drum Corps Int'l., but 95% is corps from the US, and a few from Canada.

I have had the privilege of attending such competition as a spectator. I was in band,(high school), and our conductor wanted to encourage us to see the possibilities of what our band could become. I was awe-struck, to say the least. Our Conductor told us that one Drum Corp. spent $250,000 for the program. They were in High-School. and not from a rich town. They are being graded for show, musicality, originality, technical prowess of the material, footwork, technique, sync of drumsticks, flag core, parade. Some are over 2 days long. This group the Blue Devils is the creme de la creme and is extremely difficult to get in. I have heard that they only accept 50 each yr. They just got their youngest member at 16 and your out after your 25th birthday. It's the Marines of Drum Corps. "The Few, The Proud, The Blue Devils"
