This is one aspect of working in police/emergency services that many don't realize. You work a set roster of days on and off, and many public holidays just happen to fall on days you're rostered on. No such thing as an "extra day off for a public holiday" in this line of work. Admittedly though I've been fortunate enough to score overtime shifts when a day off coincides with a public holiday. Such shifts attract quad time pay rates which comes in handy.
@newzealandpolice
@newzealandpolice 5 жыл бұрын
Quad time? Far out I remember those aussie penalty rates fondly, we don't get anything like that but extra operational deployments, even those in the same location as your general area, do come with meals provided so there is that. - Constable Hurn.
@doncoleman4938
@doncoleman4938 5 жыл бұрын
@@newzealandpolice Be nice if ANZPAA could push for the same penalty rates and entitlements for NZP members! Sadly though, I think it's beyond their scope. "Specials" as we call them, were often offered to senior connies and sergeants first. Took me a while to start scoring the odd one. Take care out there, even if on Oscar tango!

Hi Lucy, you wouldn't be the first nurse to change uniforms! There are options to work more flexible hours for officers. I know a few people who have done it in short term because they've had a new baby or are a national representative athlete and are going to extra training or on a tour. It isn't really done so you can have a second job too. On a personal note, It's really encouraging to see your passion for helping people. Policing (and nursing) are stressful jobs at times and going from one to the other would probably burn you out really quickly. I'd encourage you to ask about doing a ride along at your local station or even apply and do the scope shifts so you can make a decision if you wanted to swap over. - Constable Hurn.

GamicGaming Constable Hurn posted excellent advice. I spent 10 years with police and 21 as a paramedic in Australia, and occasionally worked on the recruiting team when on light duties. The written tests are what really narrow the field in prospective applicants. If there's one but of advice I can offer it's to remember to not just be good, but be BETTER than the next applicant. If you make to interview stage that basically means you've shown the selection team that you're a hot contender. After the tests, practice interview skills with friends and family. Best wishes with your application, and bear in mind that even some of the best police officers didn't get in on their first application.

I'm in the same boat as you, getting my full soon and then once my run time has come down and I'm better at the jump I'll be applying. I did a pre police course at EIT and I found it was a little helpful but there wasnt enough focus on the selection process for me. I have been been seeing a tutor for 6 months now to give me the confidence to go in there and pass. I would recommend having a Google and see what options are in your area tutoring wise. I study any opportunity I can! Good luck, I hope you're successful :)

Hello from West Virginia in the USA...Absolutely love the show! Been watching since the very first one. Are your law enforcement officers allowed to carry a firearm on duty? If not, do you have any sort of special unit that handles those calls when deadly lethal force is absolutely necessary? I've watched law enforcement vids from other countries and have noticed that not very many carry a duty weapon. Our police officers here in America carry but the only time I have seen them not carry is when they are off duty. Also, Do you police the whole district that your station covers or do you only cover so far then another department takes over? Sorry if it sounds stupid..For example, In the states..Our cities and towns have what we call city police departments then outside of that jurisdiction the sheriff's department in that county or parish(Louisiana calls their counties parishes..not sure why) takes over then the state police will cover that entire state. Do you have anything like that there or how does your law enforcement work in that sense so everything is covered? Keep up the great work and be safe out there! Thanks!
@newzealandpolice
@newzealandpolice 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad, glad you're enjoying this slice of New Zealand! We carry on-duty when we feel it's necessary for the job we're at. There are also specialist units similar to SWAT who are on call. We're a national service, there is only one department here and it's us! Which makes us a much larger service than many even in the US. In terms of practical boots on the ground; we split ourselves into areas and patrol our patch. although we jump across our theoretical borders often to help another area out with bigger jobs. Hope that clears things up. - Constable HURN.

@newzealandpolice
@newzealandpolice 5 жыл бұрын
Officers might, or might not it's really up to them. Acting off duty is also up to them, if you see something the first point is to call the police, on duty staff can deal with it but if you really need to step in (I've done it before) then having your ID is handy. Equally it's important to get a break from work and carrying it all the time can be unhealthy. - Constable Hurn.

Regarding that religious group yes there may be freedom of religion in NZ, but there are also regulations against excessive noise such as the Resource Management Act (1991). Also there is the Auckland Council Public Safety and Nuisance bylaw that prohibits creating "a nuisance through the use or playing of any instrument (musical or otherwise), any type of public address system or any type of amplified sound system, or from making any excessive sound or noise". That person who was annoyed should have made a complaint to the council about excessive noise.

@@blaziken4116Oh, OK. There are ADR rules on vehicle noises. More often than not, police who pull over a car that's too loud will also have other non compliance issues and safety breaches. It's easy to spot a proper enthusiasts car than a car that's had money poured into making it look and sound good but neglected with keeping it roadworthy. I love the sound of a macho V8, but just shake my head in disbelief at muppets who put loud exhausts on a 6 or even worse a 4. One reason there are such rules is because most don't like loud cars, just as most don't like hearing loud opera music, bagpipes, rap music. Personally I reckon playing Justin Bieber music should be an offence!!! Haha.

@@blaziken4116 Well you have to understand that while not everybody agrees with the laws, we have to obey them or suffer the consequences. Maybe lobby your local member of parliament to get it changed. They're the ones who make the rules. Police just enforce them. You didn't get targeted because you're a P plater. You got a traffic infringement notice for having a non compliant car. Simple as that. Being a new driver, I gather your VZ isn't a V8. Noisy V6 cars just sound like annoying tinny V8 wannabes. If I was going to spend decent money on an older car, I'd probably choose something a little exotic or with wow factor. The VZ were a good car in their day (we had them at work), but they were essentially just a vanilla boring family/company car and as common as anything.
