New Zealand take on England in the series deciding 3rd ODI at Eden Park in Auckland during the 1990/91 summer of cricket in New Zealand. A thrilling run chase that came down to the wire!

Those days people did not worry about batters strike rates. A score of 230 to 250 used to provide good contests because of the sporting nature of the pitches back then.

Also, quality bowling, bigger boundaries and bats that tested your physical power.

Great uploaded, thanks. I came here for the Robin Smith cut shot. I've remembered that shot for 31 years, it even sounded different. Possibly the hardest hit cricket ball ever in NZ. Awesome stuff.

Thanks! This was the first game of cricket I went to, an amazing first game to go to! I'd forgotten about Ian Smith's 50. That was fun to watch again!

I saw him play that shot several times in England, including Edgbaston 1992 I think.

@@ajs41 yes quite iconic. I've heard ravings of a cut shot he played against Merv Hiughes in the '93 Ashes too, I might try and track it down sometime. Smith was good to watch, nicknamed the Judge.

@@pat1589 In 1993 we were at Headingley on day 3 I think, when Border and Waugh batted almost the whole day. It was one of the most depressing days for an England fan I can remember. I was 14 at the time, and it was my first visit to Headingley. So we didn't see Smith bat that year regrettably.

Richard Reid was a man before his time! :) A big hitting opener that could have achieved great things with Greatbatch but sadly he never arrived on the international scene. NZ trying to do things before the science of big bitting openers was really understood.

Funny you should mention Richard Reid, I will be uploading a highlights video of him shortly. Keep an eye out for that! His batting style and aviators certainly caught my attention as a kid!

The one day game was born in England 1973 but in world series 1978 in Australia coloured clothing came along than it got better years later in 1992 .

This match is typical of a NZ ODI performance in the 1990's. Top order folds up and is dismissed cheaply, leaving the middle order to rescue the innings to get the total to at least something that is respectable, the opposition gets off to a great run chase, before it falters in the last few overs, with a 'heroic' performance by our bowlers.

Haha all helped by a low and slow pitch. Good times and great memories!

what a wonderful batting order NZ had: Wright, Crowe, Greatbatch, Jones, Rutherford, Smith, and Cairns> and they played together for a decade ... stability! and LOOK at England - Atherton, Stewart, Gower, Gatting, Gooch, Robin Smith, Lamb- all went on to be the CAPTAINs except Smith

Love Reid's sunglasses. Was this Small's last international match?
@pixeltees2 жыл бұрын
Haha me too! Used to love him and Crowe opening the batting for NZ or Wellington. Good question, I just looked it up now, Small played ODIs until Aug 1992.
