I was in grade 5 those days. India might fail to make semis in that world cup, but India lost very close matches against England, Australiya and South Africa. Also match against Sri Lanka was abandaned due to rain. Had luck was in Indias side, India could well reach semi finals.

Sidhu was completely out of form during the entire 1991-92 season. India spent the entire season in Australia, Sidhu averaged barely 20 against the quality pace of McDermott/Hughes/Whitney/Reid. It's a different thing he might've turned out to be better than Shastri as an opener in this tournament. But in all, BCCI made blunders in selection. In fact, many even say that although Kapil Dev was approaching the end of his career, he should've been retained as captain for this World Cup owing to his superior leadership experience in big tournaments.

@@AnkitSingh-pz2ju worst selection ever, shastri was carrying injury knee was in bad shape,players were tired as there was no break from Aussie series and World Cup, atleast 2 week break should have been there, and the duck worth Lewis in the rain affected match against Aussies where they reduced 17 ball and only one run, we lost that match by 1 run , good old memories winning against Pak in 1992 wc was the only pleasent moment

​@@abhoyableBCCI management was in turmoil for most of the 90s. It just kept experimenting rather than team building exercises. Board members were more interested in vendetta and ego politics. Azhar's appointment as captain wasn't because he was loved by everyone, it's just coz post the 1987 WC they came to a stand: ANYBODY RATHER THAN KAPIL. The musical chair started with Vengasarkar, over to Srikant and finally to azhar. Then there were nuts like Prabhakar who were more interested in causing infighting and in their quest were supported by scheming executives like Jaywant Lele and Ajit Wadekar. Bishen Bedi as manager of the team was more interested in commenting on other team players than look in his own backyard. Jadeja, Kambli, Sidhu. These guys were typical subcontinent bullies who couldn't do anything outside Asia. Not entirely their fault, they should've been sent to play in English County Cricket for exposure to variety of conditions, but it wasn't to be so. As far as this WC is concerned, Shastri was the true villain. And he did it just coz he wasn't appointed permanent captain.

Surprisingly, an ageing Kapil Dev performed far better than his younger colleagues like Shastri, Prabhakar, Srinath and Manjrekar.
