Zipp sent Si a pair of their latest carbon road bike wheels for him to take a look at in social isolation. They're the latest offering from the American company and depart from their previous models as Zipp have expanded their 'real world' aerodynamic testing which means that the wheels are a claimed 10 watts faster at 40kph. How have they done this? We take a look at all of the details about the new wheels...

Need a Rim brake version. But I have to wonder if the rimset is compromised for climbing. Take a long climb for instance with more then 600+m elevation gain, an what is the resulting change in pressure if you run at max tyre pressure?

@CyberdyneSystemsSkynet 4 жыл бұрын
Everything sold to consumers is marketing. The dimples are legit but the speed you have to be going/gains they would impart is lower than marginal. Just like with these the lower weight and shape is BS, they're actually just saying they use a less rigid layup to save cost because most people can't generate enough power to flex a wheel anyways.

Can’t use Conti GP5000 on those, because they require hooked rims. And I never understood the 28mm wide trend. It’s less aerodynamic and 25mm on latex tubes or tubeless has a very low rolling resistance and amazing comfort at the right pressures.
@Jeppelelle
@Jeppelelle 4 жыл бұрын
Less aerodynamic maybe is true but 28mm has less rolling resistance than 25mm & 28mm. 28mm GP5000 has as lower rolling resistance at 100psi than 25mm has at 120psi. So 28mm is faster & can be more comfortable than 25mm

The "hockless invention" sound more like marketing, than real improvement to me. Listened to a podcast with Conti's product-manager for road-bike tires lately and he didn't seem so happy about hookless. Resume more or less was: rim-manufactureres like hookless as it's easier to produce hookless carbon rims, since the design isn't so complex, but it's very challenging to keep the tire safely on a hookless rim with the hight pressures you ride on road-bikes.

I can see the benefit for larger tires running low pressures but I am still not convinced by hookless for road use. Limited to tubeless only tyres and can’t run them at a greater pressure than 73 psi??? I would rather have the security of a hook so my tire doesn’t blow off thanks over a minor weight saving/aero gain. It seems like manufacturers are moving to hookless to save money in manufacturing costs.
@gcn
@gcn 4 жыл бұрын
All fair concerns, but 73psi is more than adequate for a 28mm tyre so hopefully that along with the wheels being disc specific should mean that there is no danger of a tyre blowout.

You hear a lot from the manufacturers about rolling resistance gains on wider tyres due to lower pressures from bumps in the road getting absorbed, but never about the energy lost that would be propelling you forward on high pressure tyres that is lost in downward compression of the softer tyre during the downward pedal stroke. I’m no expert but common sense tells me that needs factoring in the comparisons

@@Digi20 Do you say rim brake rims cannot be hookles?
@lannym
@lannym 4 жыл бұрын
@@jkk916 Here's the thing. I know people say cars and motorcycle rims are hookless, so there's no reason a bike rim can't be. BUT, those applications run much lower tire pressure, and the tires have crazy stiff beads Mountain bike rims, similar situation. Wide rim, wide tire, low pressure, hookless works. Now, road cycling, you're dealing with much higher pressures, and comparitively narrow rims. When you see the 73psi max on these rims, it's because tire retention goes to hell at about 80psi. That's the number that ETRTO uses as a max before a rim must have a hooked design. So, if you're going to limit the psi to 80 or below, the rim needs to be pretty wide, at which point rim brakes (and sometimes rim brake frames and forks) start to have clearance issues. So, you could make it, but there's not many applications for it.....

Hi GCN, did you have any tyre/frame clearance issues with the 303s running 28 c tyres on that canyon aeroad?

I’m confused...are they comparing these to the Zipp 303 FC tubeless? Or the Zipp FC non-tubeless wheels? I run the Zipp 303 FC TL wheels and they are fantastic with GP5K 28mm tires. If was in the market I’d consider the new wheels for sure. Would rather straight pull spokes though. Sad they changed the logo, the old logo is a classic.

so if you use tube inside, what's best the tire pressure should be, let's say for 50kg rider?
@cjprimrose
@cjprimrose 4 жыл бұрын
"Tubeless only" printed on the rim. What do you do if you do get a puncture that the sealant fails to seal? That has only happened to me once and is why I still carry a tube just in case.
@gcn
@gcn 4 жыл бұрын
So it's for tubeless tyres only, you can still run them with a tube, it's just that non tubeless tyres won't mount safely on the rims

External rim width is 27mm, yet Zipp say it is optimized for 28mm. I assume Zipp has now abandoned the 105% rule along with the dimples. Marketing guys must be really really busy. Hambini called it.

basically you must be tubeless otherwise you will have the weight penalty of the tubeless ready tyres plus the inner tubes, so around 200g more per tyre, that's crazy

I'm not understanding how a tyre can stay on a from WITHOUT a hook/lip and it's disc only, not that it matters to me as I'm not gonna shell out for a disc-bike when I'm happy with OLD-FASHIONED callipers, but if you ride disc I'm sure you may get execited about these..

I find the performance gain claim interesting on two fronts. 1. You would need to complete the same test for the 303 Firecrest that they are now using. Is this where the 10w @ 40km/h comes from in comparison to the 303s? 2. What is the comparison between these two tests for the 303 Firecrest? All testing requires a benchmark, and I think the cynical view of marketing bs is formed by the lack of transparency between the two test and the two products. Would love GCN to challenge Zipp on these questions to prove their own independence
