I’ve test driven both and the Telluride is a much smoother ride and quieter and it’s less expensive with a whole list of safety features.

But it's cheap Fake Brake AWD system sucks. Why oh why didn't Hyundai use Dynamax like they have done for many years on many vehicles or their own HTRAC? Because Hyundai got greedy that's why and now the Telluride will NOT be my next ride.

I think the explorer all around is a much better suv. Live the power out of the base engine. The telluride has like no torque for the size of it, I definitely felt that.

B ! I dislike the screen. But a lot of brands are doing that now a days. Other than that, my fathers new ST isn’t flawed at all, it well built and has non of those issues.

I have both. At first the Kia was cool because it mimicked a Range Rover but the Explorer has been more durable and the acceleration on the freeway is helpful.

Thats what you get when one vehicle is produced at a union facility while the other is produced at a non-union facility in Georgia. One of the main reasons that GM fought the UAW a few months back, foreign companies are able to produce vehicle with the same or better quality in the Southern states with much lower logistics and labor cost.

Robert Jones The new RWD Explorer is already a better vehicle than the Telluride. Perhaps the interior isn’t as plush, but in every other metric the Explorer a far superior vehicle.

Since Ford sells so many Explorers, they do not have to offer many features for an overpriced SUV, but this will be changing in the future. The Kia Telluride is the right winner.

A new first year model is usually not a good choice to buy but I'd prefer the Telluride over the Explorer because of better built quality, exterior/interior design & value for money Great comparison review

If you want performance, get the explorer. However for luxury and bang-for-your-buck, the Kia wins hands down. The only reason why the Ford will remain number one is because they have many police sales. But other than that I wouldnt be suprised if the Kia outsells the pilot and highlander.

having driven back to back, telluride clearly is a better performer all around. ford just really felt outdated already. telluride felt firmer, quieter, and just felt much more upscale.

That was mostly isolated to the eco-box vehicles like the Focus. You'll find this transmission in the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade, Corvette, Mustage, and the Expedition. This transmission was a joint GM and Ford product. Being that this transition is going to be in just about every GM and Ford product, this transmission was built to last.

The Explorer with its new rear drive chassis rides, handles and out accelerates the Kia. It's tubo 4 has more power as well. It Tows more weight and does it easier due to rear drive. Sync 3 is also far superior. In a few years the KIA will be a rattle trap. I have a few friends who tried KIAs and thats what happens. An Explorer with 100k miles will still be a tight rattle free chassis. KIA needs a 100k warranty. You get what you pay for. The KIA tries to lull buyers with its lower price over the quality of a rear drive chassis and far better engineering.

Not in my experience. But KIA needs a long warranty that's why they offer it. I drive a lot and except for maintenance every car needs I spend no money on repairs. My explorer sport will out accelerate, out handle, out stop, and out tow any KIA suv. At 50k miles it is still tight as a drum. not a rattle to be found. There is a reason the Explorer is and has been the top selling SUV in this size class. It is simply the better SUV and now the new 2020 takes a giant leap forward to rear drive based. Its standard engine if more powerful than anything KIA has and you can step up to the ST with 400 HP. Its also the fastest and best handling police car there is. I don't see the Police buying any KIA's

The Kia is objectively mechanically inferior in almost every respect. The only way the Telluride is “better in every way” is if you rank a vehicle on intangibles like an ignoramus and don’t actually know anything about automobiles.

The Explorer appears more streamlined, even though it's in a less favorable color than the KIA. The KIA does have some nice interior appointments, but it's the best they have while Explorer still has 2 steps to go. The KIA offers only one engine choice at 291 HP, that may be fine if you drive alone. Put 3-4 passengers and gear in it and you may not be too happy. The Explorer has 4 choices all the way to 400 HP. My money is on the Explorer.

After debating on which SUV to get, I got the Explorer platinum, I don't mind spending a few thousand dollars more to get what you really like, a way better looking vehicles than the Kia, lots of technology and a lot more power than the Kia, thanks to a 3.0 liter twin turbo engine, couldn't have made a better decision.

One more for the Kia Telluride, it has rear exit assist that acts with the blind spot sensor to keep the doors closed if it detects an on coming vehicle, cycle or sort of danger.

I test drove the Telluride and I do like it a lot. But the things I didn't like was... 1: You need to go all the way to the SX just to get memory seats. 2: The suede headliner is a fingure print magnet. 3: The automatic starter can only be used through their app, which is also a paid service to have. ( I think it's about $200 a year.) 4: No all weather floor mat option. 5: They're to tough to buy, you need to put a order in which can be 2-4 months out plus put none refundable money down. 6: Dealers are trying to sell for over the sticker price. ( I personally had a dealer tell me the he was going to charge me $10k more just because of supply and demand, which just made me walk away.) So, if this list was factored in I believe the Ford would be the winner over the Telluride. ( Plus, just personal preference but I think the Ford's exterior profile is way better than the Telluride and I'm not a fan of Ford's.)

Good comparison between the two SUVs that are high on my list. The problem with the Kia is that you can’t find an SX AWD anywhere near where I live. There are plenty EX FWDs, but they lack all the features that I want.

The Explorer is a casket on wheels. They haven’t fixed the carbon monoxide issue since 2014. People are crashing, cops are going off the highways & crashing. Reason why I went with the Telluride.

They also gave the Ford a full point for having that useless storage space underneath that generic Ipad and the unusual (but "efficient"?) wireless charging location where hard braking could cause your phone to fly off of it as well as half a point for having a very slightly better sound system. Yup, these things are what really matter...

This shows just how much car segments have been standardized across brands. Both look impressive yet have incredibly similar feature content. The biggest difference to me though is price. The Telluride is underpriced while the Explorer is overpriced.

Drove explorer, kia and hundai. Kia is best bang for buck. I personally love the explorer exterior design....and love the range rover style too but just personal preference....kia and hyundai are cool looking too. I made the mistake of driving the explorer platinum....3 liter twin turbo is addictive, and expensive but overall ride, quality of interior, all the nice additional features, I went with the explorer platinum. Have had it 4 months, 2500 miles, excellent off roading and is true 4wd, not awd (not hard core off-roading but pretty rough/muddy, rutty), nice ride BUT the power....Love it, super fun to drive, and 10 speed works very well for me. If you have a tight budget Kia very slightly edges Hyundai and of course ford but for pricier tons of fun, the platinum or st, although the st is a stiffer suspension, harder ride. And it's hard to really compare the internals, quality, etc, so just performance and looks can be deceiving....we'll see at 100k miles. Still love my platinum and enjoy driving it every day!! Nice comparison guys...well done.

Seen them both. Drove them both. Ford explorer ST trim is my first choice. But 62k for an Explorer with historically bad Ford leasing...no thanks. That being said the Kia is killing the market right now based on overall value it can't be beat othan than by the palisade which is a more luxurious version of itself. Currently waiting for the palisade to be sold at less than msrp instead of up to 5k markups I've seen at the moment.

Different strokes for different folks. The Telluride is designed for (and built in) the North American market where buyers find a "rugged" luxury vibe especially appealing. The Palisade is designed for international markets where "ruggedness" is trumped by a more pure luxury vibe.

FYI all new Kia key fobs are designed with the buttons on the side to reduce false signals with keys in pocket & the 120V outlet in the Kia is a child safety outlet!

Smoothness and quietness are very important for me and from the your video and audio it seems like the Kia is smoother and quieter under acceleration and driving. Also the interior color choices is important.

Telluride vs Explorer? More like Durango vs Explorer. The Telluride/Palisade are leaders in the FWD crossovers, but the Explorer only has one competitor, the Durango. Considering the Durango is now going on 8 years, its kinda sad how well the two compare.

Well, since the primary advantage of a RWD platform is its greater suitability for towing, the fact that the Durango's tow rating is more than 2000 lbs greater than the Explorer has to count for something. Even the Nissan Pathfinder can tow 6000 lbs vs the measly 5300 lbs of the Explorer.

@@stephenhendricks103 the Explorer can tow 5000 (hybrid) 5300 (2.3) and 5600 (3.0). I think it has to do with the frame design being so much lighter. The durango can tow 8400lbs max which is just shy of 3k more than then Explorer, but the Durango is longer and drastically heavier, as well as having a much more powerful engine under the hood

Stephen Hendricks Lol, RWD chassis offers superior driving dynamics/weight distribution, superior serviceability and greater greater component durability. Suitability for towing is the least of the RWD advantages, just ask Mercedes and BMW.

I have the Telluride, and I totally agree about adding remote start to the key fob. Now I’m too cheap to pay for the Uvo subscription, but when you buy the vehicle you get like a year for free. Since I work in the basement of a large hospital, the cool thing about the app is you can remote start from anywhere. Good review, and not disagreeing with the outcome since I haven't driven these. I do think your points calc for price messes everything up, however, since depending on your budget $3k might be negligible to you at this price point. In your measure that's the single most important factor, which really isn't how people choose a car.

Unfortunately, other than simply mentioning the existence of various safety features reviewers don't compare their actual performance. In my experience KIA's has among the best lane keeping assistance and doesn't "ping pong" from one side to the other. Likewise for the KIA/Hyundai adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

@@stephenhendricks103 Yea I agree - I've asked Alex on Autos this a few times and he said they were looking into how to normalize this testing and have a common framework. I have a feeling every single reviewer will HAVE to start including this beginning next year because the function of these features are going to be huge differentiators. If the Kia can damn near drive itself during a road trip but my 2019 Pacifica still needs my hands on the wheel because it's ping-ponging, I might reconsider which family vehicle to buy (if I had known that) for example.

Subscribed! Great job! I am actually looking to buy one of these two vehicles. I'm choosing between the Telluride EX and the Explorer XLT. Do all Telluride models have "lane watch" (per Honda)? I currently have a 2016 Pilot with Lane Watch and that is an amazingly helpful feature to have. I hate that Honda has discontinued it on Pilots.

The Explorer with its rear drive modern chassis and much more advanced engine and drive train kills the Kia. It will leave it in the dust and around curves as well. Its a far more advanced vehicle

I have never had a repair on any of my 6 explorers or my 2 Edges which have been run as much as 195k miles. Just normal maintenance. However both my friends with their KIA's have. Not mention one other where it was a rattle trap at 50k miles.

@@ginsure I've heard different, but I'm sure most cars will last you as long as you keep up with scheduled maintenance. Your friends may not have been as responsible as they could've been with their maintenance, you never know🤷🏾‍♂️. However, there's a reason JD Power ranked Kia the 7th most reliable car brands out of 31 ahead of almost every single American made car and Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. Losing to Porsche, Buick, Ram and Lexus in 2019

Mention that both have lane centering in addition to lane keep assist that will steer for you on well marked roads. This feature is glossed over on most reviews but will change your entire driving experience. I’d like to see a reviewer compare the ACC and lane centering between these models.

I work at a Ford/Kia dealership and I have compared the two systems. The Ford lane assist is part of their lane centering.The Explorer doesn't ping/pong you within your lane anymore, but it does make a lot more corrections to try to keep it centered and you can definitely feel it trying to where as the Telluride doesn't make a lot of corrections because it does a lot better job at keeping the vehicle center so you don't even notice that it's working. What both of them will do is deactivate the system as soon as the line on either side of the vehicle disappear (exit/merge lane) but will turn back on within seconds as soon as it starts seeing the markings.

the 2.3 L 4 cylinder is going to have turbo problems and when they do it's going to feel like a slug. The V6 doesn't have power but it gets up and goes and is a great engine. This is the first time seeing the Telluride and I'm amazed by the features and the comfort it offers for the over 7k less than the Ford. I've been seeing people talk about how Kias are getting better over the last 10 years, not sure if that's the case haha. Great video though :)

Lets see you forgot the telluride has acoustic glass to cancel out sound and you also have lights in cabin that you can change colors and that the telluride have 6 different drive modes. I test drove a telluride and im hooked

I've been considering these to replace my 2001 Yukon - I'm a buy and hold kind of buyer. You can track prices on Cargurus and it's very interesting. Here in So Cal the dealers want to rip your head off. Not even a unit to test drive. I like it - but not that much. Especially as a first year model. But in due time, maybe. I'm also waiting on the 2021 GM SUVs that should be coming out early next year.

I just can't get over how much the Telluride looks like Great Value Tahoe. If I were goimg for the Twins, I'd pick the Hyundai, but the Explorer is tough to beat considering it's pedigree, strong engines, and RWD drivetrain. FWD is cheaper to produce so the Kia should be cheaper.

"....strong engines"? You think a four cylinder engine from a 3500 lb base Mustang is an appropriate power plant for a vehicle that approaches two and a half tons when loaded with fuel, passengers, and gear? As for the RWD drive train, that's supposed to be a benefit for towing. The Dodge Durango, for example, has a tow rating of 8700 lbs. The Explorer's rating is only 300 lbs more than the 5000 lb rating of the Telluride...or the Sorento.

@@stephenhendricks103yet it makes more power and torque than the V6 in the Telluride and has better economy. As for RWD, it's more than just for towing capability. The driving dynamics are just better on the RWD platform. The Explorer drives like a smaller vehicle and is more agile; something they didn't give the Explorer enough credit for in the video.

@@tri3pleagent There's no question that forced induction from a turbocharged engine and appropriate gearing can produce excellent performance. The issue is the relative durability of such a configuration compared to a larger naturally aspirated V6.

@@tri3pleagent Well, of course for a larger engine with a broader power band fewer transmission gears (and fewer potential potential problems) are necessary. Sorry, but the laws of physics haven't been repealed. More moving parts moving faster, propelling more weight means more heat and more stress. And more stress means less durability. It might give you "no hesitation" and I'm sure Ford is grateful that you wouldn't be considering the laws of physics.

Depends on local dealers. My KIA dealer doesn't add a "market adjustment" sticker to any vehicle. The downside is the long, long waiting list for a top trim SX model. But that's hardly the fault of either the dealer or KIA. It's called the law of supply and demand.

Stephen Hendricks - I suspect that isn’t SoCal. The mark-ups here are across the board, though I believe the amount is dependent on the trim. CarGurus is showing 135 in stock within 50 miles, so supply is there if people are willing to pay the mark-up.

So many seem to only care about price that they missed one very important thing that someone recently put me onto. Many faulted older Ford Ecoboost engines because they only had direct injection as KIA/Hyundai do with their one 291HP engine, while Ford offers 4 options with the smallest producing more HP than Hyundai only engine. Ford has since added port injection to their 2nd generation engines making them more reliable and cleaner.

The Explorer is totally growing on me. That being said I would vuy the Kia because of the price. I hink the Explorer is OVERPRICED. You own the road in explorer. I had a Toyota Yaris for 10 yrs and merging onto the parkway, no one would get over for you which resulted in near misses and anxiety driving it for me. First time I test drove a Ford Explorer on the parkway the huge truck moved over well before I needed to merge, after that I said sold!

The Ford quality, looks and power is hands down, the winner. I am not going to pinch pennies and buy a buyer's remorse car, such as the Kia. Just spend the extra money and buy a car you'll be much happier with. Plus you can put a tuner on the Explorer and get a ton more torque in under 15 minutes of programming.

Guys when you compare 4 cylinders with turbo vs 6 cylinders, you are like comparing chicken sh..t with chicken salad. On the long run classical 6 cylinders are much more reliable.

You'll never get the stated fuel economy out of a turbo engine, unless you purposely avoid engaging the turbo, which is not easy, especially in such a heavy vehicle. On the other hand, it is fairly simple to exceed the stated fuel economy in a regularly aspirated engine if you want to.
