News of the death of Peter Jones

Peter Jones collapsed during his commentary of the 1990 Boat Race on 31 March 1990. Two days later he died. This report comes from BBC Radio 2's Sports Desk on Monday 2 April 1990. The presenter is Jon Champion and there's a tribute from Cliff Morgan

As a young boy, Peter Jones’ description of events brought football alive, European nights were special. Thank you Peter.

Peter Jones and Bryon Butler commentating on major football games on the radio was a memorable part of my childhood. RIP to both.

Peter Jones delivered the most beautiful, and heartbreaking, description of an event in April 1989 that can never be forgotten and that changed English football forever. One of the greatest radio broadcasts ever made in my view. RIP, PJ.

Sue Hedges his son Stuart Jones was Times football correspondent for a long time. He died of cancer aged 62 in 2013

On the sad day we lost John Motson, I will always remember Peter Jones and that velvet voice commentating on those European nights with my beloved Liverpool although his commentary on the 83 cup final (Smith must score and he hasn’t scored) will always be his best for me).

It’s a different era. The gravitas, the understatement, the restraint forged in the steel of whatever made you British. His epilogue at Hillsboro, immortalised as “ and the sun shines now” and reproduced here is stunning. It takes a special kind of person, not least a special commentator to capture lightning in a bottle like he did. But he did, and left the world a little better for it.

My brother had a Bbc cassette of Arsenal matches over the years. One commentary from that cassette was the 1979 FA cup Final between Arsenal & Manchester United, what a voice. His grasp of English and his descriptive brilliance was nothing I have ever heard before and I do not think I will hear again.

I uploaded a copy of the FA Cup Final in 1979. Admittedly it's from a BBC World Service shortwave recording so the quality is far from pristine. I have a pristine copy of the whole game along with may of Peters commentaries.. He was the greatest football comentator ever as Arlot and Mcgilvrey were to Cricket and Peter Bromley and GV Wynne Jones were to Racing and Rugby and Des Lyneham was to Boxing ... What we have now are pale in comparison. RIP Peter Jones.

Very sad, a part of my childhood listening to Peter do the commentary on the great European Cup nights in the 70’s & 80’s on crackly medium wave reception on Radio 2

The commentators used to be Maurice Edelston and Peter Jones, then Bryon Butler. I can remember those radio commentaries on European nights involving Tottenham, trying to hear their voices in packed stadiums as they described the games. I fell in love with radio. 50+ years later I still prefer radio coverage of football to television. Many thanks Peter! RIP

Thanks for posting this clip. Peter Jones was a great commentator. I still remember his commentary on the 1979 FA Cup Final (3 goals in the last 5 minutes...) as if it was broadcast yesterday.

Sadly radio commentators not as well known as TV commentators, but he would have been wasted on TV. Like John Arlott, he made the pictures better on radio...
