This was a clip for the HBO show the newsroom. This clip featured what happened to me when I was booed at the GOP debate in Iraq. This was very powerful... and humbling.

Capt. Hill, I am a USAF Veteran. I served for 11 years between Vietnam and Desert Storm. I never served in combat. I am not gay. The amount of respect I have for you, sir, cannot be measured by mere words. The way the show worked is they took the major news stories from like 6 months earlier and then built an episode arc around the events that happened. Obviously some of the larger plot threads like Genoa were totally made up but a lot of those clips are real things.

As a libertarian, I imagine we wouldn't see eye to eye on a great many subjects. But that doesn't mean I don't respect what you stand for. We are all trying to make the world a better place in our own way as viewed through our own optics. That said, ANY liberal or conservative who has the rationale to look at an unjust situation and make the appropriate logical decision, even if it means crossing traditional party lines, and not give into bandwagon sensationalism earns my respect. I feel if more people can come to this conclusion, we might finally start to heal as a nation and put the United back in United States. Be well.
@nigelft
@nigelft 3 жыл бұрын
@@SirV3nt Well said ... In this, the most divisive times I have ever known since my birth in the 70's, both here, in the UK, and there, in the US, in the time of a once-in-a-century pandemic, that the moderates on either side sees that there are more things that unite each other, and divide ... I am not saying we should all hold hands, and sing round a campfire ... but, rather than fire cheap shots, nor worry about statues (which can be fussed over later ...), with literally thousands dying, and many more infected, this is wartime, abet against a microscopic enemy. Given human lives are literally on the line, then the same attitude of 1939 to 1945 should prevail: suspend the usual political sniping, until this pandemic is over with. In fact, give the frontline soldiers, both the medical staff treating patients; and the many microbiologists either in diagnostic labs, or the ones working on the vaccine, every single penny in both wages, and material (especially equipment ...), to do their damn job. You can take $1 -$2 Billion off of the US DoD budget (a drop in the bucket, since they themselves reported that the last, internal, audit they did, they couldn't account for $1.something _Trillion_ ... ) ... Heck, the US Army spend $2+ Billion on a camouflage uniform (the ACU), which the DoD had to retire, due to being Unfit for Purpose ... and that isn't including what the USN spent on theirs ... Call me crazy, but if many branches of the US Military spent an insane amount of money on uniforms which service members complained about, especially those whom wore them in combat environments, to their detriment, then the least the DoD can do is pay the same money back on such absolute waste, when the money is truly needed elsewhere ... ... but that is just me ...

Thank you, sir for your service and sacrifices. I was raised to respect all servicemembers & emergency responders. Unfortunately, as a lily-white baptist raised in the Bible Belt, I was also steeped in vicious racism, homophobia, & gender discrimination. Ethnic & homophobic slurs were de rigueur at dinner tables, church functions, & school, from children *and* adults, including those designated as "role models & authority figures." Thankfully, growing up in that toxic stew of ignorance & brazen hatred cloaked in unconvincing sanctimony & misplaced reverence for "tradition" had the opposite effect on me. I became a vociferous reader & religious skeptic. I moved away in my early twenties & relished each new experience. That was over 20 years ago. I continue to thank every uniformed person I encounter. My ideas about bravery & honor have changed greatly. You, sir, are a brave & honorable person. If either of my children possess a _fraction_ of your character, I'll consider myself an effective mother. With gratitude & respect, Rebecca Baggett

Captain Hill - I am not in the military and I am straight. However, if I was on the stage during that debate, I would have lambasted those audience members who booed you and made sure they felt like s***. Thank you so much for your service. I can't measure how much respect and admiration I have for you. Godspeed!!

Thank you for your service sir. I did not realize this clip was posted by the actual soldier that was booed that evening. The bravery you showed that evening may even eclipse the bravery you showed by being a part of our armed services.

Capt. Hill, thank you for your service and bravery ON and off the battlefield! It is people like you whom just by being brave enough to be who you are and by holding a simple mirror up to the rest of us and asking for us to SEE who we are as a collective…this is how we change for the better. It seems so simple, but it can be the hardest thing to do…because most of the time the last thing most people want to do is look at themselves, ESPECIALLY their own self projective hate and ugliness…..Thank you for your bravery!

Finding out this was real is heartbreaking it shouldn't matter your sexual orientation, regardless of who you choose to love you're still human and deserve to be treated as such. Love is love is love. Thank you so much for your service, this nation owes you a debt that we will never be able to repay. I hope you find love and happiness, you deserve it so much.

Captain Hill, thanks for what you did for us all. I am transgender and have served in my state's law enforcement for nearly 20 years. I have never officially come out and been open about who I am, though a handful of trusted people know the real me. I have personal reasons for not being entirely open, but I hope I can muster the same courage you displayed in this video. I trust all is well with you...good evening, and good luck with your future!!

I get very suspicious of politicians when they start honoring military personnel to get brownie points. I get very uncomfortable when politicians start saying that they're doing something "for the children."

I understand that Republicans don't like us (the LGBTI community) and I also understood that they hated that DOMA had been stopped but I didn't understand their booing of a soldier in Iraq. I agree with the young reporter at the end of this clip and wondered why none of them tried to stop it. Sure probably all of them would have liked to boo right along with them but they were on the campain trail. Politics would surely have deemed it prudent to at least make them stop. Glad you're back safe!

Captain Hill, I support you. As a fellow combat veteran, it boils my blood to find out that you were treated that way. Not once did it matter the sexual orientation of the men serving with me, in or out of combat. Fighting men only care about the ability to fight and watch each other's backs. I know there are some idiots who are still bigots. But for the most part, we fight as one cohesive unit. We don't care about race, religion, creed, or sexuality. We only care about bringing our brothers home. I salute you sir. Semper Fi

Back then, I thought this was one of the worst examples of public collective willful ignorance, this country of ours had seen in a good like while. All these years later I wish it was. Hopefully you're still serving Cpt. Hill. We need strength like yours. P.S. My Big Brother, SSgt. Raymond T. Morgan told me to tell you, "We are still with you, Brother.

That moment of the debate showed the true nature of those candidates and everything you need to know about their character. It also highlighted EXACTLY why none of them are real leaders or even caring human beings. The fact that they would not stand up and defend a volunteer serving in the military for even a moment after pandering to their bases to "Support the Troops" shows how little disregard they truly have for standing up for what's right as opposed to not jeopardizing potential votes.
