Demond was clearly NOT the right person to do this interview. Rob Reiner or Sally Struthers should’ve been the ones to be interviewed. Demond didn’t know Norman well enough to do an intelligent, informative tribute to him. U know the interview wasn’t gonna go well when he beefed at the beginning that his guest appearance on “All in Family” wasn’t shown in the feed. This was bout Norman’s TV legacy not Mr. Wilson’s career, opinions or military service.

I found Desmond to sound bitter despite the successful career he has enjoyed as an actor in a highly competitive field of talented actors. His negative, post Vietnam experience certainly painful and deserves acknowledgment. But Norman Lears' shows allowed us (Black people) to say it like it is out loud on TV. "Step Toe and Son" wasn't written about a. Black man, but transitioned beautifully on "Sanford and Son" , because doors were opened by successful Lear productions. We need those kind of sitcoms today!

Firstly his name is Demond, not Desmond. Secondly, black veterans of the Vietnam era were subjected to the harsh racism of the country at that time. I’m sure with whatever traumatic things he may have seen over there, along with the disparities of being a black veteran had it effects on him. As being a combat vet myself, I could only imagine the stress and pain he probably suffered as a man of his age now. From what I gathered, Norman wasn’t as hands on with some of his shows as perceived. I would be “bitter” too, if someone was credited with having a hand in my success, even though he was slightly present. Mr Demond Wilson earned his stripes and should be celebrated as an TV icon

Remember, at this time African Americans were not allowed to produce their own series or shows. Even the great Flip Wilson. Redd Foxx was the talent along with Demond who emphasized our culture realistically. Demond played the "straight brother" to offset the brashness of Redd to perfection.

You can be truthful without being arrogant mixed with a little narcissism! I understand that he was at one time a good actor, but his arrogance is probably why he didn't have the career that he could have had. Condescending attitudes don't take you very far! This wasn't an interview about Vietnam, theatre, the draft, or his personal life. All that the host is saying is true, but that’s only one side of the coin. During his tenure on Good Times, actor John Amos openly clashed with the writers of the show, due to the scripts' lack of authenticity in portraying the African-American experience. This led to his dismissal by executive producer Norman Lear at the end of season 3 in 1976. Esther Rolle was also given resistance and a hard time in backing John Amos and almost decided to leave the cast because Norman Lear was taking an uncompromising position regarding their concerns. They’re not going to speak about that.

When Wilson said Lear had nothing to do with Sanford and Son, the interviewer could’ve pivoted and asked him what he thought about his one role in All in Family-pulling a gun on Archie. It was a powerful scene in which he and Cleavon Little were smart guys who were robbing homes because of their circumstances not because they were bad guys. Little’s character recognizes that Edith is a pure spirit and returns her jewelry to her before they leave. Did Wilson agree with the sentiments expressed in that scene?
