For such an intricate background and art, the gameplay seems surprisingly boring. :/ Too much luck involved.

$250-$1500 for a game with deep rules flaws. Not surprised it was cancelled. Metal coins, metal dice, plastic or resin minis, pre painted or not, pvc cards, plastic game board, hard cover rule book. The game with everything except game. They managed to condense 5 minutes of action into a mere hour.

This game has everything … everything that is considered bad game design: Roll for move/actions, no meaningful decisions, fiddly rules, randomness over randomness and loosing turns.

explain why roll for move is "bad"
@johanneskrenner8908
@johanneskrenner8908 6 жыл бұрын
Rolling a die for movement or the amount of actions is widely considered bad, because a die is a really good randomizer. You can get 4 times the same die-roll easily. But how do you think a game will play out if one player has 5 or 6 consecutive high/low rolls? Also, the spread of a normal D6 is large. If you roll a 1 you get half of someone who rolls a 2, but somebody with a 6 will get 6x more. I wouldn't want to play a card-game where you get 2 cards and your opponent 12. But I think the most important part is: Why? Why randomize player agency?

There is an option to take 5 overall damage in order to get 6 action points for that turn regardless of your die roll. I had to do that a lot when I demoed this at Origins and hurting myself almost as much as my opponent did because I kept rolling 1s and wouldn't have been able to do anything otherwise.

As I watched this, the d6 for action points was my #1 issue. Too unbalancing. The homebrew fix I would apply is one D6 is rolled and both players have that many. This way it randomizes the capacity of actions you can take in one turn, which will likely affect what you try to do in that turn. But my second issue is that I felt like there was no healing. Once damaged, the negatives just seem to build. One good run against you and you are behind and now your SDS is reducing your ability to compete, which compounds the losses. I would have liked to see a unique attack form for each Motivator and a unique movement proabably with a cost of 3 or 4 to limit its use. The Turnarounds also seemed too random. If you're loosing, and you draw one that hurts you... it isn't a turnaround. They should have been structured as a negative to the leader or a bonus to the losing player. This way ever card is in fact a TURNAROUND of whose ahead. Two simple fixes that I think would improve the game tremendously.

Comments here are harsh. No Robo Rally fans? No Tales of the Arabian Nights fans? Random is fun, just gotta learn to laugh it off. The production is beautiful. The relaunch has affordable options and needs support.

I just went through the intros in a row, and I've noticed that she seems more and more ummm... relaxed as I progress through them. In the first 2 she sounded like an advertisement, but since then it's noticable how she slowly gets used to this, I'm posting it on this one, as I haven't watched this one yet, and also because I feel that further progress won't be as noticeable.

Another example of a "style over substance" game. Randomness in every step. Both players could just roll a handful of dice each, sum up and compare. Would've make it much faster and equally boring. Sorry, wouldn't play that "game" once. Still loved watching Becca and Gaurav presenting it :D

I would have loved to back this game, the visuals are great. But the gameplay is just wildly random. It is like playing chess with dice to say what piece moves where. Beautiful chessboard, but Not really going to enjoy it once novelty runs out. The gameplay is fixable. D6 for action points--one roll for both players this turn, but only the roller puts the coin on their turnaround rack. The Turnaround cards need to be designed to CAUSE turnarounds. Right now it is just more random good or bad with no purpose other than stacking random on random. They should be called Luck cards. Turnaround cards either hit the leader with a negative or the current loser with a bonus. Simple fix that will help balance the game--which means keeping both players viable to win. Gaurav was losing the entire game with little to no recovery. I see comments about totally random games are fun. No, they often aren't. Just roll dice and add them up. First to 100 wins. Having fun yet? I think each Motivator should have a special attack and move. They would have a high action cost to limit their use. Maybe 3 or 4 each. The big fat guys can charge forward forcing the opponent back. A more lithe figure can flip over an opponent, or use a column or obstacle to swing around it--maybe that can be a landing kick attack. The card would have a darwing show the movement or how the attack must be setup and execute square-wise. This way there is a reason to like playing one mini over another. Then add the two drawn powers--I don't recall the name of the one-use cards that they get two of. Those things would improve the gameplay for me. I'd also consider using a D8 for action points to allow more "action" each round. That might mean altering costs on an action or two. The grapple was useful, but the few action points just led to grapple-liberated-grapple-liberated-grapple-liberated, it was too repetitive. I'd like to see a sort of dice economy per turn. Like you get to use 1 of each d4 through d12 for your actions. You can choose 1 or two dice per action. But so can your opponent. This way I'm expending them like energy and deciding how much I want to stack to make this action a success or that action. Something like that to give the player more control for strategy. You can always have simpler rules for new players that swap strategy for randomness. But, for a lot of gamers, and that is who is going to back this... it needs better designed gameplay.

This is why Graphical Designers don't make good Game Designers. The Artwork is great ,the miniatures are fine but the part of the game shown is just - bad. It is slow, random, needlessly complex and success slides heavily from the first hit onward. The amount of dice, tables and specific rules used reeks of early 90s design in all the bad ways. When your game needs a spreadsheet and about every common form of dice plus a specific 'direction dice' - you are either writing a game for a TINY segment of excel Fanatic Die collectors or you have failed.

Wow this game was incredibly painful to watch, and not in a way appropriate to an arena brawler; this episode showed exactly why too many random elements just do not make for good gameplay as Guarav never had enough action points, his only turning point was a negative effect (and actually should have been *more* negative since it should have kept going each turn till he succeeded), plus his only special card was wasted. It was a real exhibition for bad game design, and it's such a shame, as a few minor tweaks could make this game so much more playable; e.g- giving characters a fixed AP pool each turn, maybe have leg injuries reduce it, plus add some more ways to spend AP to boost SPS, then remove the weird random fire moving mechanic (it should just stay put, or have a chance to spread into adjacent squares). Too much randomness just makes for a bad game, sorry.

To much randomness and spikey game mechanics. Miniatures seem okay, but game design is needlessly complex and plagued with linear strategy due to luck making strategy almost just a flow chart.
