It's hard to explain how great JT was. It doesn't always show up in the highlights but he had an energy about him that could change the game. As a Queenslander whenever we were up shits Creek and needed something out of nothing the team could always depend on Thurston to create something special.

The thing that doesn't get mentioned in the comments, but is what made him so popular is after each kick for goal he would collect the kicking tee and hand it to the ball boys and after each game he'd hand his headgear to a kid in the crowd as he was leaving the field and sign autographs for the fans for up to an hour after a game so I've read. JT got a lot from the game, but gave more back through these simple gestures

JT was the Captain of the North Queensland Cowboys and helped get the team to their first and only so far Grand Final Win. He learnt from a former player of The Cowboys Josh Hannay, whom was their kicker to practice practice practice every kicking scenario on field. He would be the last person to leave training because he would be there until he was satisfied with this kicking game ready for games. Then he passed a lot of his wisdom on to the next captain when he retired in 2017 Michael Morgan. He always put 110% into every game he played. He helped QLD win 8 State of Origin Series in a row. Now he is assistant coach of the QLD team with Billy Slater is the Head Coach.

JT was first-class in every skillset physics allowed him to be good at. Goal kicking? Not the best ever, but you wouldn't be able to see the gap with your eyes. Short kicking in general play? Pin-point. Long kicking? Radar guided. Play-reading? Like he was psychic. Line-running? Dude could fit through holes that'd make cats balk. Passing? On the chest. Dummy passing? Dude dummied to no-one and fooled the defense once lol. Team behind? Pulls a rabbit out his butt and grows an extra limb to make things happen.

The best story I have of Thurston's toughness was when NSW decided to run their "Bruise Brothers" Paul Gallen and Greg Bird. It wasn't a secret as the team telegraphed it in the Sydney Papers saying Thurston was a weakness they could exploit. Gallen who weighed in at 117kg and Bird at 103kg ran the ball at every opportunity (which was often) at Thurston who weighed only 89kg. Their idea to eventually run over the top of him failed as Thurston kept knocking them down and then he destroyed NSW in attack. 😊 They didn't try that tactic again.

Your comparison of Thurstons kicking and Brady’s passing is so accurate. Having a kicker that can the ball on the dot like that with someone who can jump and catch on the wing/centre is a cheat code in the NRL. Queensland did it in State of Origin for the best part of a decade with guys like Thurston kicking to guys like Greg Inglis (someone you should absolutely check out if you haven’t already, literally the most action packed highlights you can find).

That last goal kick is one of my favourites in State of Origin history. Down 1-0 in a 3 game series, with the scores tied inside 3 minutes to play, AND away from home, he slots it right down the middle. That ended up being his last ever State of Origin match, he played most of that game with a busted shoulder.

JT was absolutely brilliant - I was never gonna cheer for him in that Maroon jumper, but when his club team - nth qld Cowboys made the grand final, I was cheering for his success so hard, because he deserves it so much. Not only is he a great player, but he is a top bloke, that gives back so much to his community and he has the best sense of humour- his laugh along will make your day, 😊

Jonathan kicked the winning goal after the final siren in his club team the "Northern Queensland Cowboys" grand final win. We won the Grand final because of his kick, he can handle pressure, that was our clubs first winning final. It was extra special because the Cowboys home town Townsville is a regional much small city, were as the team we beat is also from the same state but is the capital of Queensland, so much much bigger, millions of people instead of a couple of hundred thousand, they liked to call us their little brother in the relationship, but when we won it was the first time their team the Brisbane Broncos have ever lost a grand final since their club started 20 years before the Cowboys.

Hi Dar. I love JT and I was so happy for him when he and his North Queensland Cowboys won the NRL premiership. I was doing pizza delivery at the time and I was following the game on the radio. Right at the time when JT was going to kick the winning goal I stopped my car at a launderette and I saw the kick on the television there, but I was still working. LOL And the kick was good. 👍 The player that jumped up high and caught the kick pass was Israel Falou. He was recruited to play AFL for the GWS Giants and even though he was a novelty you could see that he has potential to play a variety of sports because of his athletic ability. He ended up playing Rugby Union for New South Wales and Australia. Funny thing that he represented Queensland in Rugby League but that's why they call that "State of Origin". And fun fact, that he and Greg Inglis are cousins. Also Israel Falou is married to Maria Falou who was a champion Netball player for New Zealand. She's a physical specimen too. I wonder what their children are going to be. Unfortunately he's a bit of a dick. He's a religious person who is very conservative and preachy and he has been a douche on social media. But he was a great athlete and achieved a lot in three sports. Yes I am counting playing in the AFL alone as an achievement. ✅🇦🇺 And I think he took some marks in matches. 👍😀

You should definitely add the great Darren Lockyer to your research list. Lockyer holds a unique record: he is the only player to ever win the Golden Boot award (best player in the world) after having captained his club (Brisbane Broncos), his state (Queensland) and his country (Australia) to victories in all major competitions in a single year (2006). A quiet and unassuming man off the field, he was an icon of leadership on it.

Thurston spent most of his career playing for an underdog team, North Queensland’s Cowboys. He was the heart and sole of that team and eventually after years of trying, after years of being one of the best players in the competition, he carried the Cowboys to a premiership. Kinda like if Lebron had never left Detroit and won his first championship with them.

The best to ever play imo, what’s crazy is this is all his Origin highlights only. Origin is a series of 3 games a year (best of 3), QLD borns best players vs NSW borns best players (state v state). It’s considered the hardest and toughest arena to play in by all the players and would easily be named the biggest and best games of the year by the fans, biggest rivalry in all of League 👌🏼

Thurston played more than 10 years in one of the most stacked rugby league teams probably of all time and still stood a head above almost all the others. He also lifted one of the worst teams in the NRL into champions and fairly consistent finals contenders. To really understand what makes him great you'd need to watch an analysis of how he influences a play/down. There's a good one here by a guy who used to coach the opposition team (the real time play was in this highlight video): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grucetqQp7y4oWg.html Nothing is by accident for players like him. Except interceptions 😏
