Dave was right, it was 43 Troy Polamalu again. Five plays of Troy's so far here. You should definitely do a Polamalu highlights vid. The guy was a GOAT legend. He played safety, a position we saw a lot of in this footage. There are two safetys on the field (Fress Safety and Strong Safety), who will play deep on pass plays, and will come up as run support when needed (hence why Troy was always up and jumping the line in this vid). They see a lot of action, and a Troy vid would give you a chance to see all the work a safety is expected to do, by one of the best to do it.

Ya safeties have to be the most versatile defensive players on the field imo. They have to fulfill every role depending on the situation. Short pass defense, long pass defense, linebacker support, d-line support, they’re the jack of all trades of the defense. Takes a really talented player to do either role well.

Troy Polamalu, the long-haired guy, was also featured in the previous video ("Where did he come from?") jumping over the center and doing a full backflip. That was a penalty, but his famous move that you keep seeing here is guessing what the quarterback's snap count is and timing it perfectly to get in the backfield before he can be blocked.

Trying to explain Troy to people who didn't get to see him play is weird for me. It's like he came out of nowhere and was one of the best defensive players in the league and then just disappeared a few years later. But during his run he was on a different level

Yep, and people don't realize how risky what he's doing is. If he's wrong, the encroachment penalty is painful. High risk high reward move.

Wrong, it wasn't Troy in the last video. That was Mike Mitchell, number 23. Troy wouldn't have done that when the game was over and the other team was just kneeling the clock out. Troy had a brain. Go to 10:10 of that previous vid. Amazing how many upvotes a factually incorrect comment can get. Goes to show why this world is doomed.

When Bill Belichick said the play made by Ed Reed was the greatest play he's ever seen by a free safety, he wasn't joking around. Ed was being humble in that moment but coming from Bill, that's about the highest praise you can get.

43 is Troy Polamalu for the Steelers. He was one of the greatest defensive players of all time and was a 1st ballot Hall of Famer

Damn right that was Troy Polamalu with the long hair. That man's hair was like a cape. He was probably the greatest defensive player ever in the NFL. His play instincts are legendary. He could read any play. More than often when the Steelers needed a defensive play, he was the guy to do it. He would gamble, but anyone who has played will tell you its a gamble everytime but for him 60 to 70% of the time he was right.

Troy Polamalu was a beast. Such a great player. Just a reminder guys. Oct 9th. NY Giants vs GB Packers in London. Tottenham Hotspur stadium. P.S. It wasn't Polamalu in the other video. That was #23. I think that was Mike Mitchell back then. The announcer says it was a Troy Polamalu type play.

8:50 keep in mind that, at the time, Donald Jones (the receiver) was 180 lb. The guy who hit him was Vince Wilfork who was roughly 425 lb. at the time and unblocked. Jones fractured ribs and had whiplash from the hit.

What makes the Polamalu plays on here so great is that he's not supposed to be so close to the line (well he can but not topical). He actually plays for in the backfield. That's why these plays are so great

Troy Polamalu was one of the greatest players in NFL history. I'm not a Steelers fan, but I would watch Steelers games just to see him do his thing. He was involved in almost every single play. Almost every tackle, you'd see those perfect strands of hair waving in the wind.

A bunch of people have said it already, but I'll agree, you guys should watch a Troy Palomalu highlight compilation. Dave was right when he asked if the guy with the hair was the same one from the earlier play. He's a legend. Just had a sense beyond anyone else on the field. Very few guys ever at that level.

Troy Polamalu was such an animal. Off the field. He is the most meek and mild individual full of humility. Almost the complete opposite of nearly all NFL phenoms if we're being honest

You guys should react to Deestroying's videos. They have 1 on 1 matchups between receivers and defensive backs. You can see what goes into route running and how hard it is to cover some of these top receivers. Plus you will love the trash talking they do. It gives you a close up look of kind of what its like on the field.

Polamalu was one of those guys who affected plays either really well or very poorly. It was either he made a great play or he'd get burned badly.

Polamalu has done that time after time after time lol coaches on other teams hated him because he was always straight to the ball quick no matter what and pretty much unstoppable. Has some of the best interceptions in NFL history, actually his "The finger tip interception" is known as being the greatest interception. That's why he's known as one of the greatest free safties in NFL history. By far the greatest IMO also haha

The Troy Palamao (sp?) (Steelers #43), jumping, you guys nailed it. There is a perfect example of Lawrence Taylor doing that and the QB did not snap the ball, so he flies over the top and lands on the QB and the ball is still not snapped - It was a penalty but had to be hard for the QB to just sit there and take it. Another bit to that is the Off. Linemen cannot move. If they even flinch it could be called a "False Start. They want to protect the QB but are completely helpless to that move. It's a gamble. Steelers #43 Troy Palamawhatever is retired.

Watching Bill Belichick talk football, on the ‘NFL Top 100’ show, is one of the most interesting watches for an avid football fan… Love or hate him, there’s no denying that he’s a wealth of football knowledge unlike any other… In his, now infamous, press briefings, he comes off so dry, and sullen…, but get him talking about history, and great players/plays, and he will entertain like no one else can. In that clip of him extolling the greatness of Ed Reed, is just a magic moment. Best part of the video…

@16:48 actually he was the punt returner n back to receive the punt. So he had to see it’s a fake then react to it n come up n make that play. N he’s actually a receiver himself.

Dave was correct in saying the first play and the play where he jumped over the offensive line to make the tackle were the same guy. Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Born in Garden Grove, CA where I live. Troy is a human highlight reel all by himself.

In my mind a lot of these are like when I played soccer, you don’t wait for the ball if it’s passed to you, you move to the ball & win it. A little different in football but the defense knows the pass is coming & step out in front of the offense to win the ball

Imagine the number of games you have to had played (from grade school - to university - to pros) to be able to recognize and capitalize on a defensive advantage, which is in addition to, stopping a professional offense. Similar to the NBA bottom row difference video - guys like former Pittsburg Steeler Troy Polamalu are just on another level.

Obviously, American Football, like Rugby, has it's basis in Association Football. That is why we call it soccer over here, cause to distinguish between Rugby Football and Association Football, people started saying Ruggers and the far more popular Soccers. I just like that it all started in the 5th Century, with Saxon Warriors, kicking severed heads at trees. You guys should check out Legion of boom highlights. They were the Seattle Seahawks defense from about 2012 to 2015ish. The 2013 defense was arguably the best defense in history and were a lot of fun to watch.

No doubt it’s been suggested, but all you newbie NFL watchers should be watching “Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Detroit Lions” on HBO. Every year interesting, but this one’s been a great watch with Detroit’s entertaining coaches (and rookie “talent shows”). ✌️🏈

good video the problem is with this type of video is that unless your a big nfl fan and understand the defense and offense aspect in depth with plays and forations and what the job of the individual player is during that play itself then you wont realize "woah that was insane that he read it like that" these smart well versed and studied athleetes that made that read and made the play.

That's funny--come to the effing ball! That is what coaches in all sports say--I played basketball and that was rule 1 when a pass is to you---same in American football--come back to the ball--don't wait for it.

"Read him like a book" defense plays is why good quarterbacks look off their intended receivers as long as possible and change the snap count so the defense doesn't play based on the cues the offense is giving them. When the QB changes the snap count on a random play...or goes for a "hard count" of yelling what the defense thinks is the snap word...the defensive line might jump offsides thinking the ball is being snapped, and the offense gets an easy five yards on a penalty. The downside is that there are times that the offensive players can be just as confused as the defense, and get called for a false start when they weren't paying attention in the huddle as to what the snap count or word was going to be.
