We design around 1 Liter per minute per channel but our target flow rate is half that.

Yes. The Nursery and Finishing run off of the same reservoir but the propagation system is on a separate tank.

We are not in a hot area so do not require chilling the water. It warmer climates, we over size the reservoir so thermal mass plays a part. You can use a chiller to cool your water or build a heat sink to help pull the heat from the water. You also need to make sure the water is fully saturated with O2.

The reservoir for this system is 1200 gallons

Chiller or heatsink too cool the water, drop in heater or boiler to heat the water. If water is too warm you can use ozone to super oxygenate the water but it is a fine balance.

This system uses 2" PVC pipe from pump to NFT tables and 4" PVC pipe from tables back to reservoir. Return plumbing pitch is ¼" per foot and the system runs 24/7. Tank is below ground and head loss calculations are minimal so we can get away with using a 3/4 HP pump for the whole operation.

Channels are Irregular Polygons. The top is 2" wide so the hole has to be less than 2" in diameter. Anything hole larger than 2" would degrade the strength of the channel. Holes for finishing channels are 1.75" and holes for nursery channels are 1.6825".

Sorry for replying late. This one slipped through the cracks. We have had root aphids before but not in this system. One benefit of quick crop turns and pests don't have a lot of time to develop and get a foot hold.

We do not.

The NFT system runs 24/7 and recirculates. As the plants transpire, water is added to the reservoir via float valve and the nutrient controller takes care of nutrient and pH set points. Propagation systems irrigate on a timer. Growing medium needs to drain between irrigation's so oxygen can fully saturate the root area.

@@DM-sc4zy We do. This all depends on how balanced you nutrient formula is for the plant type you are growing and how pure your source water is. We dump our tank every 8 weeks.

We sell by the plant verses weight but you can use 6 to 8 ounce for your calculations. For this greenhouse we user roughly 60 gallons of water per day and roughly 129 KWH per day; that is avg over a year. However, this is not a perfect model for commercial production since our mild climate allows us to not use a chiller to cool water or a walk in cooler for produce. Both of those items are power hogs. We also have hydronic heating in the floors basically putting extra money into the infrastructure verses paying more for heating.
