We'll take a look at more free agency signings. This time with a focus on some Canadian teams, the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Candiens and the not so Canadian Florida Panthers.

@@CreepBootas a Habs fan, I am super excited about this contract because Slafkovsky really has shown is potential last season after a season of ajustements to NHL hockey that was to be expected due to his size and style of play. But having Cauflid, Suzuki et Slaf all below 8 million a year for the next six years is crazy. We will finally be able to build a real contender team !

With the cap going up again in future years, near the end of the deal he could be a near 100 point player (if all goes well) making what a 3rd liner will be making. But definitely some risk involved in the gamble.

@@CreepBoot It's risky in the sense that he could just not pan out and it turns into a bad contract (I think that's unlikely but it's certainly possible) but realistically, if Slaf ends up being a bust, the Habs' rebuild is pretty fucked anyway so in that sense it's not so risky - if the rebuild ends up in mediocrity, a bad contract just won't matter.

Lmfao I told Leafs fans! I fuckin’ told ‘em! Just you wait, Treliving will destroy the Leafs with all his terrible decisions. Tanny is a great player, but how much time did he spend out with injuries during his 4 years here? His age and his super physical style of hockey is great………when he’s on the ice. He’s no good to you watching from the booth. He’s the kind of guy that you would be better off putting on LITR 2 to 3 months before the end of the season so that you can _Mark Stone_ him back into the lineup just in time for the playoffs.

As a Flames fan it’s been hard to watch the majority of the good team we had leave. However, all the picks we got in return gave Conny the ability to absolutely dominate the draft and come out with a big W. 2 to 3 more years of this rebuild and we should start becoming a force to be reckoned with. Hometown boys, fellow Canadians, and Russians-that’s the key, they’re the ones that are going to want to stay here. Conny is absolutely cooking and he’s getting prime ingredients.

Wonder if Edmonton will trade E Kane. This is the most movement i have ever witnessed in my 35 yrs of watching Hockey. The League and The NHL is going to have a Fresh new Look all around. Fanatics takes over, Teams re branding Logos and Colors, a new Franchise in Utah is set to hit the ice. Should be a very exciting and interesting year. I like the direction the League is taking as it looks forward to bring some new fans on board for the best pure team sport in all of sports.

Sens did well - they fixed their biggest problems. Elite goaltending check, right shot stay at home defenseman check. These are the issues that have been plaguing them for years. Honestly chykrun was spare parts. You already have 2 puckmoving defenseman, but your right side was light before the trade with Washington. Now you have 2 top pairs with a puck moving defenseman and a stay at home defenseman. I really like what staios has done. He addressed our issues without going out and making a flash and pzazz signing (minus Ullmark he deserves all the respect he deserves).

I love what the Sens have done. Being a leafs fan it will be nice to see the Sens in the playoffs. Curious to see how Ullmark will play with a weaker defense in front of him.

Leafs are inflating on term, I think part of that is they can't afford to inflate on salary cause they are right up against the cap until Tavares and Marner come off the books (either through trade or walking). Honestly, as a Leafs fan, I don't really care about the Leafs overextending on Tanev, they've shown that they are pretty good at maneuvering close to the cap and burying contracts when they need to. Also, regardless of what you think about the Leafs, they're in "win now" mode. The next 1-3 years are the window they are living in, not the next 4-6. If Treliving doesn't win the cup by the time the OEL and Tanev deals are in their "aging poorly" period, he's not gonna be the GM of the Leafs, so what does he care?

Rienharts $8M in no income tax florida, salary cap aside, is worth, $10M in Toronto. The endorsements coming from such a lare market helps bridge some of that gap but not all players get those. So for the team the AAV is better at only at $8M but the players isnt losing at all.

Skinner is a defensive nightmare. Not the kind of guy you want to have in the playoffs..... Numerous teams have moved away from him for good reason. Guy doesn't back check.

omg you (or someone) already mentioned that tanev is old and had many injuries.... but maybe the leafs are preparing for an LV-esque injured reserve move, however I dont think tanev will have THAT massive of an impact? could be wrong (certainly less than eichel and stoner :D)

Not a habs fan at all but considering Montreal is going slo mo on the rebuild I like the Slav contract even tho it's an overpay now in 3-4 years when they go all in they will have him locked up and the cap will go up a lot and look better for the last 4-5 years

I don't get why the Tanev is so hard to read. Of course neither Tanev or the Leafs expect him to play those final years. It's not even about injury history and more about the human body. Not a ton of guys are playing into their 40s. So all the deal does is get Tanev at a much lower cap for the next few seasons than he would have been able to command if it was a shorter deal. Looking at this free agency he sure as heck wouldn't be getting under 6 on a 2 year deal. Leafs get the rest of his best years as one of the best defensive d-men in the league for 4.5 million per year. That's an absolute win not a mixed bag.

Its so wild that nobody wants to go play for the Oilers for a reasonable price even when they were 1 game away from the cup. So many players would die for the chance to play with Mackinnon, Barkov, Kucherov, etc, but not McDavid.
