Congratulations to Connor McDavid, who in this past season (2022-23) just scored the second-higest all-time point total in one season for any player other than Gretzky or Lemieux. This video highlights how big of a deal that type of record is, with Gretzky and Lemieux monopolizing the top ten spots (along with another 5 or so that didn't even make this video's graphic). McDavid's total of 153 points was just two points short of tying Steve Yzerman for the all-time record among non-Gretzky and non-Lemieux players.
@dannycarlow8204
@dannycarlow8204 Жыл бұрын
152 points would have tied him with Espo. McDavid had 153 points. Just goes to show how great Wayne and Mario were. If Connor played as long as Wayne, he would need to average 168 points per season for the next 12 seasons to catch him. That's messed up. He averages 106 per year right now. He had a phenomenal year and hats off to him but he hasn't done for his crappy team what the other 2 did for their crappy teams. And they were both on crappy teams.

Connor didn't quite catch Steve Yzerman's 155 n 1988-89... Also McDavid scored 153- to go pass Phil Esposito (152)...

Yes, I thought I had the numbers right, but I confused the last digits. McDavid scored 153 points, 2 short of Yzerman's record among non-Gretzky, non-Lemieux players. In the original post I accidentally switched the 3 and 2, shortchanging McDavid by 1 point. To stop people from posting more reminders, I will now edit my OP to fix that.

Gretzky’s best season in points per game is 1983/84 (not 85/86), as he only played 74 games in 1983/84. He scored a ridiculous 153 points in his first 51 games (exactly 3 PPG!) in 1983/84. Lemieux never even came close to those numbers.
@jeremykraenzlein5975
@jeremykraenzlein5975 Жыл бұрын
The only stat where Lemieux beat Gretzky outright is goals per game. Gretzky played a lot more games, but had a much higher assist-to-goal ratio than most. Yet Gretzky still leads the all-time career goal-scoring record. Ovetzchen (sp?) may soon pass Gretzky in career goals, but he still isn't anywhere close to catching Gretzky in overall points.

@@moody9442 And how many more goals would Mario Lemieux have had, if not for the time he missed battling non-Hodgens Lymphoma? Although he was eventually able to return to the NHL, he lost many of his prime playing years to that disease. Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring slowed down around the age where most players slow down for one reason or another. I think that Mario without the Lymphoma would probably have scored more total goals than Wayne without any herniated disc, though Wayne would still be well ahead in total points.

@@GdF420 I agree with what you're saying but Wayne actually had the choice to play with a better stick. Instead he chose to play with what Brett Hull called " the worst stick in hockey" and still killed everyone. He would have been a scoring machine in any era because he had such an ability to adapt like no other player. That's why he has the most 5v5, power play and shorthanded points in league history. Pretty sure lemieux didnt play a single game 100% after around his 24th birthday. His backpain was so bad he constantly had trainers tying his skates for him. Gretzky while obviously affected by injury to some extent the second half of his career also slowed down due to age + defenses and goalies getting better. Gretzky's playmaking remained elite but he lost the ability to score cause he never had a great shot, when goalies improved drastically in the early - mid 90s his scoring plummeted.
@michaelgriffiths8068
@michaelgriffiths8068 Жыл бұрын
@@hockeyislife67 it’s more to do with - thanks to Gary Suter - his career threatening back injury in the 1991 Canada Cup (knocking him out of the tournament and half of the 1992/93 season with a herniated disc and subsequent back surgery). He went from 160-170 points per season (his first 3 season with the Kings) to 120-130 points per season overnight after the injury his next 2 (full) seasons. A 30% immediate drop in points isn’t the result of goaltending suddenly changing over the summer of 1991. It’s not a coincidence that happens to be exactly when Gretzky’s back was mangled.
@hockeyislife67

@@michaelgriffiths8068 The average goals per game in the NHL went from 7.3/game in 92/93 to just 6.5/game in 93/94 and 6.0 in 94/95 -> This represents the biggest 2 year drop off in 50 years. So yes it was a league wide drop in goals of about 15-20% over two years but this drop hit Gretzky harder because he was aging and also never had an amazing shot. For reference the average was between 7.4-8.0 for the entirety of the 1980's. Additionally just look at Gretzky's shooting percentage through his career - First 6 seasons he shoots over 20% 5 times (League goals average was between 7.7-8.0). Next 6 seasons his shooting declines a bit as he only hits 20% once, but continues to shoot over 16.9% every season but one (League goals average had dipped by this time to about 7-7.4 for this stretch). Then his final 8 years of his career he shot over 16.9% 0 TIMES (and under 10% 3 times) (League average goals during this time span ranged from 6.9 to as low as 5.3 in 1997 and 1998). Goalies were getting better and Gretzky never had a great shot and it impacted him even more than others. I am sure the injury had an impact as well but the fact his goals suffered even more so than his assist shows the benefit he had from playing against weaker goalies in his prime and the fact the decline was steady over his career as scoring decreased across the league proves it wasn't a direct result of the back injury but more a reflection of him having a non elite shot. His assist levels somehow stayed above 1 per game for almost his entire career despite the decrease in league scoring, cause he was that good of a passer, but he never had a top tier shot. Over the final 8 years of his career he averaged 21 goals and 82.5 assist which is a 4-1 ratio. Over the first 12 years he averaged 60 goals and 119 assist or a shade over 2-1 ratio. His assists dipped 50% similar to the league wide goals dipped from around 7.5 to about 5.5 but his goals dipped 200%.

@@hockeyislife67 - Gretzky’s production dropped by 30% in the 1991/92 season (long before the 1994 season you mentioned), and did so IMMEDIATELY after the 91 Canada Cup Gary Suter hit in September 1991 (just before the 1991/92 season began). This has nothing to do with league scoring averages going down since, as you state, league scoring actually went UP (not down) the following two seasons (1992/93 was one of the highest in NHL history).

@@michaelgriffiths8068 The Kings from 90/91 - 91/92 dropped in goals from 340 (1st) to 287 (10th). The team shooting percentage dropped from 14.1% to just 11.9% - they had more shots on net the year after the Gretzky injury but less goals. The entire teams production dropped but the level of play from the team and Gretzky was the same, the difference was the goalies got better and their shooting came down to earth. The production did not drop because of a Gretzky injury because otherwise they wouldn't have generated even more shots. Gretzky himself went from 19.3% to 14.4%.
