Sabres fan of almost 36 years, here. What Jack did on that play was what all the Sabres did while he was there. I can't count how many times the Sabres retrieved a loose puck on the boards and attempted a no-look pass or clear like that only for it to result in a turnover and a goal. What was even more boggling was the fact that it was never corrected in the six years Jack played in Buffalo. I cannot tell you how nice it's been to watch that particular bad habit die this season for my Sabres.

I think it's a little silly to watch Fleury misplay the puck like he did in that clip. It's going to be so satisfying though to watch him enjoy some play-off hockey while Vegas watches from the sidelines. I'm torn between feeling that he was fortunate to have been traded away from a team that couldn't make the play-offs, or was it karma coming back to bite Vegas for trading away the face of their franchise in such a secretive dirty way. 🤷‍♂️

On Haula's PS: I'm pretty sure Steve is just being silly for the sake of being silly, but I actually like that the NHL has hard defined rules for stuff like this. If the puck stops motion after it has started, the play is over. Also, the puck has to completely cross the goal line to count as a goal. It doesn't matter how "little" Marchand moves the puck any more than it would matter how "little" of a puck still hasn't crossed the goal line. Any amount counts, since that's where we draw the line. Anything that is left up to the judgment call of the refs is bound to have issues, especially in hockey where the minutia of millimeters is sometimes the difference in a fast-paced full-contact sport with 100 mph pucks. If I want a sport where people just give me their feelings about who is the best on the ice, I'll watch figure skating.

I always watch Dang-Its with my 11-year old son. After the Samsonov Dang It I said "Maybe he's dancing?" My son replied, " Maybe he's trying to impress the ladies." I nearly peed my pants.

It's simple: There has to be a Start and an End to a Penalty Shot. And the Penalty Shot starts, when the Puck is touched by the player and ends, when it's either in the net, being saved by the goalie, or misses the goal. Simple and most of all: it leaves no room for interpretation.

As a Caps fan, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that I’m scared for the playoffs. Our starter, Sammy, is incredibly inconsistent and we never seem to use VV in important games/ games against better teams. In my opinion Vanecek is a much better goaltender and we need to take advantage of what we have, while we have it.

That penalty shot on Hoffman was dumb. He did "slash" the stick, but he only made contact with the blade, so that should have been allowed. I'm shocked Steve missed the other Dang It in that game when the Bruins had 8 or 9 players on the ice and yet they didn't get a too many men penalty.

I feel that the rule makes sense because as soon as you move that puck, it's in play. So, if you mess up the approach, that should be invalid and if you don't move it it's fine. You put in a 15sec time limit to have to touch the puck or the shot is waived off to stop any stalling or mind games. Not that dumb imo. Ever rule has those moments where the rule applies but is unnecessary, but the jurisdiction of that rule has to start somewhere.

So my thought is, when he over skated the puck and then retreated to get it, was the goalie thinking "this is no shot" so was confused? Did the goalie let his guard down? You get my drift?

As a former goaltender, I can tell you the reason goalies play the puck is because... its fun and I'm going to do something cool. The alternate reason is... my teammates aren't helping so I'll help myself... oh, nvm. Also for Samsonov, his stick/blocker looks like it gets caught a little bit on the top of the net and ice is slippery... or you know, spinning on your knees is fun and cool.

The start of a penalty shot/shootout attempt is the puck being touched. After that forward momentum must be maintained in order for it to be legal. Marchand has to come to a complete stop and the puck comes to a complete stop. Haula doesn't start the attempt because the puck isn't stopped. We sometimes see guys on their attempts skate around the puck and cross the red line several times. If we were basing it off of them crossing the red line players wouldn't be able to cross the red line anymore before they attempt their shot.

The penalty shot makes complete sense. There has to be a something that starts the shot attempt. It could be crossing the red line but that is no more arbitrary than touching the puck. And touching the puck rule means you don't have to scrutinize if he crossed the line a bit before getting it even in one motion. Once you have the rule on what starts the attempt it is no different than losing it half way down. Once the puck stops its forward movement the attempt is over.

Philly tried to challenge it and the refs incorrectly told them that it wasn't a challenge-able play even though it is thanks to the Sharks-Blues playoff series a few years ago. The hand pass through the crease that became a goal, the fact everyone and even the refs knew that it shouldn't have counted, and them not knowing the rules.

I think that touching the puck signifies starting your shootout attempt. Similar to high jump where you can do your run up but not jump and it does not count as an official attempt. Or at least that is what I think.

Steve, the only argument against a penalty shot would be if the penalty wasn’t a penalty. There are 4 criteria for a penalty shot: Fouled directly from behind or diagonally from behind Fouled beyond the defending blue line No player between the player fouled and the goal tender And the foul denied the player a reasonable scoring opportunity. The slash is that he came down on the stick and knocked it out of Haula’s hands. That’s what the ref saw and called. From his angle, all the penalty shot criteria were met. If he was on the glove side rather than the blocker side he might have seen that the swing around did not actually cause the stick to come out of the players hands, as Haula just dropped it, but since the ref was blocked by Haula’s body, from his position, that was the right call.

With regards to the "tend the goal" trope .. it's normal for regular fans (and players) to think that the goalie should just stay in the net, or that he opted to just go for a little wander out of boredom. The thing is, these goalies have to play these pucks, it's part of the defensive system. If a goalie doesn't play it, he'll hear it from the D or the coaching staff, it's that important. So yes, it's valid to criticize the choices made by the goalie (where he played it, although a lot of those are drilled plays where he's supposed to put it), but they have to do it. The times they get scored on playing the puck stand out, but we don't have the benefit of seeing the stats for if a goalie didn't play the puck in these situations, chances are they'd be facing a lot more scoring opportunities. /Goalie thru college.

One of the most irritating comments to me, as a goaltender, is “if you’re a goaltender, tend the goal”. Playing the puck as a goalie is an enormous part of the game. It can save your defensemen being hit in a compromising position, or save some of their energy if they’ve got a forward glued to them. Good goaltenders can catch the opposition on a bad change and help generate a chance, and goalies that know how to play the puck help prevent your team getting work down by constant cycling of the puck. Yes, mistakes happen, but the benefits outweigh the cost. That’s why goalies still play the puck in spite of this asinine one liner. The only people that say “if you’re a goaltender, tend the goal” are the ones that only watch hockey, and don’t play hockey.

So glad to hear someone harp on "goalies tending the goal". I played goalie, and hated leaving the net open to play the puck behind the net. So many times you try and make the play, but can't get back there fast enough to really make a difference, let alone recover back to the net fast enough. And that doesn't even account for the odd ricochets the puck could take. That said, the coach would berate me anytime I wouldn't try to play a puck behind the net to the point some of my teammates would actually get mad at me too; like risking an open net was worth it so they didn't have to take an extra stride.

I guess it's a technicality: the attempt is considered started when the guy touches the puck. If you touch the puck and overskate it - you screwed up. If you overskate the puck without touching it - well, you didn't start your attempt, you are just having fun and preparing for it.

Similar bet story, someone placed a 0.20$ bet on the 2020 f1 race at monza. The was a random podium with 67467:1 odds. Gasly, Sainz and Stroll. All three in midpack teams and all three with no race wins to their name. Surely enough. Gasly won, Sainz went second and Stroll went third. That race was insane.

Samsonov is spinning to try and cover as much of the net, while maintaining his movement momentum. His right knee pad is dragging on the ground. His only other option, really, from this position is to maybe step his right leg up and around the post, and push across. The problem with that is that he exposes more of the bottom of the net (the most LIKELY place the puck will go from Cziekas’s position) while not being certain where the puck might get shot at/from. So in short covering as much as possible, while trying to get in the optimal position as quickly as possible.

About the penalty shot. I agree with the call (no touch no foul). Like in The Mighty Ducks , when they skate circles around the puck (technically going beyond it) before touching it and moving forward with it

@SteveDangle You are correct in that the job of a goaltender is to tend the goal... but the most important job of any teammate is to protect their fellow teammates. Goaltenders playing the puck is as much a defensive strategy as it is a safety measure. Whenever the puck is dumped behind the net-- especially when it's moving so slowly that it might stay behind the net-- if your team's defenseman is first en route to the puck with a forechecker hot on his heels, they are susceptible to the worst kind of checks imaginable. I've seen defensemen toe pick while trying to deke out the forechecker and go into the boards awkwardly and I've seen full cheap shots from behind in these situations and if the goaltender is too scared to make a play on the puck out away from the end-boards, they're going to feel responsible. Plus playing the puck is a lot of fun.

wrt the penalty shot/shootout: I think if the player carries the puck out of the circle and loses it then the shot is invalid, if they flub it in the circle (lose the puck or just skate past it) they can't go back and fetch it but the shot attempt is restarted. Could add in something like you can only have one restart, touch the puck or not.

The rule isn't "overskating the puck". The rule is "the puck must remain in forward motion"; it can't "remain" anything if it hasn't moved yet. That's why Marchand's didn't count and this one did. Pretty straight forward.

I think the team defending a penalty shot or shootout attempt should get to place a "chaser" that starts on the goal line, while the attacking shooter starts on his own blue line. That would create at least a little bit of back-pressure but still should give enough time for the attacker to make a good move. I hate the super slow approach that some shooters employ.

The last two minutes are so important and are so key: If at someday, the average paying customer does not understand the game and the rules anymore, the league is gonna have problems. Feels like we move closer to this point everyday...

The rule for shootouts and penalty shots is that the puck must be continuously moving forward once touched. Marchand grazed it and the puck stopped shortly after. It isn’t about the touch, more so keeping the puck moving forward after the initial touch.

I like that Steve Dangle spotlights these goofy calls at times! Speaking of, I really wish that more hockey fans, not just the dh fans, who are and have been fed tf up over the inconsistency and the absolute, "in your face", blatantly bad/ non/ "missed" calls from the officiating around the entire league, would call and or email, tweet for all I care, the league and complain until something is done about it! In today's game, with replays and with so many eyes on the play, even Toronto watches every second of every game live,.. you would think that Bettman and his cronies would hold these NHL officials more liable for their actions on the ice.. having major consequences for big time screw ups, especially during the playoffs, if a referee decides the outcome of a game or a playoff series do to a horrible call or a "missed" one!. Now I understand that they're just human and mistakes will be made, I get that for sure! BUT, for example, (this 1 of many that I've personally witnessed at a game) - when a ref costs a team a game because they are allowing something to happen in the first 2 periods but are calling it a penalty in the 3rd, or vise versa, or they're "letting them play" now, if that in some way favors or benefits just one of the teams playing, in any way, then that's just inexcusable and can even come off as a little bias.. even if the ref doesnt realize it, say they are just "going with the flow" of action in the game, so to speak... uh, well if it still favors just 1 team, that is still inexcusable especially at the professional level that these individuals are working! I know for a fact that many, many hockey fans, players, coaches, etc., feel this exact way, as well as witnessed it first hand.. I'm just so tired of seeing these refs not being held to some form of standard.. in which, at the very least, be consistent with calls,. The differences in the way referee's call a nationally televised game as opposed to locally broadcasted games. I'm not saying they're betting on games or they're trying to sway certain teams winning but, I am saying the league needs to hold these officials more accountable so they make darn sure that they are consistent!

I think the touching the puck in the penalty shot thing is like the thing in chess where once you let go of a piece you moved, you cannot pick it up again, even if in a split second you realized you messed up and changed your mind about the move. Once you let go, the piece is has been played. Once you touch the puck, the puck is in play. But maybe not, I don't know

Gotta disagree with Steve's take on the shootout rule. I'll concede that Marchand's attempt and Haula's makes very little practical difference, but you have to draw the line somewhere and I think saying "the puck must always be moving forward" is much easier to measure and call objectively than any other wording of the rule. For a league that already has problems with imprecise wording and bad calls the line being so clear cut and easy to determine is a big time plus, even if from a logical perspective there is effectively no difference.

my thought would be that the players get 10 seconds to start and once they enter the center circle they cannot leave it without the puck or it's no shot and after they leave it if they lose it then it's no shot. The 10 seconds will still apply until they leave the circle at which point they must make a shot attempt within whatever the rule would be anyways which I'm not entirely sure on. Time limit keeps them from noodling in the circle for too long and confining them to the circle without the puck means that your only real option is to go in and out with it or maybe waste 3 seconds skating around the circle 1 time risking stepping out of it and invalidating your shot.

Steve, if you don't touch the puck, the play doesn't start. if you move the puck, it's in play if you're a pro that means you have control, if you lose the puck during the play too bad for you. But if you don't move the puck, then the play has never started. that's the difference. Further it shouldn't have mattered, the whistle hadn't been blown to stop the play so the goalie has no excuse....what did every coach from mites always say, "play the game till you hear the whistle..." that said, you're right it shouldn't have been a penalty shot, and the idea of a slash is debatable. FYI I'm as much a Bruins fan as you are a Leaf's.
