Elmo’s mom is is also his dad. His dad is a trans man who used to be a broad who wore doc martens back in the 90’s. Hence the soul patch, bowler shirt, and absence. You have to understand that Sesame Street time operates at 1/3 time in our world.

I think the zoom meeting thing was because the puppeteers were working remotely from home but it does make it look like he was a deadbeat Dad who has come back into Elmo's life. I thought Elmo was black. I don't mean like, that's why his Dad wasn't present.
