4x5 peel-apart film is back...again. That's right, New55 (who several years back revived the long-dead Polaroid Type 55 monochrome film, and who then stopped production a little while after, and who then came back again quite recently) is now making 2 versions of their peel-apart film: New55 PN100 and New55 PN400!

When New55 first hit the scene, I wasn't into polaroids, so I didn't have the urge to shoot a revived version of Polaroid's legendary Type 55 film. But, of course, I eventually got bit by the instant film bug, and sure enough, I began to feel the urge. The urge for instant 4x5 prints. Unfortunately, though, by the time I realized my affinity for polaroid, New55 had closed shop.
I missed the boat and I thought it was never coming back.
But then! Lo and behold! Just a few months ago I get an email from Famous Format saying they're back! So I jumped on the interwebs and ordered myself 3 boxes of New55 along with a shiny new Polaroid 4x5 film holder. I'll be honest, it hurt a little bit to spend that kind of cash on 3 boxes of film (each exposure costs $15!), but I knew I'd be kicking myself if I never tried New55. After all, who knew when they might have to close shop again?
So with fresh New55 in hand, my 4x5 view camera, a bottle of fixer, and a whole lot of potential frustration, I headed out to the desert to try it out. And since I've never shot this type of film before, I knew I'd probably make a mistake or two. And if I did, I figured you guys would like to see that.
So here it is. My first attempt with New55 PN100. Enjoy!

I’ve been shooting large-format film for 30 years. I recently retired and bought my first-ever house. The first thing I did was spend 3 months building a home theater. I love to sit in it and watch you shoot large format. It’s so much cheaper and easier than going through it all myself. Also, it reminds me how much I love doing it and your videos get me inspired for my next trip. The most recent was last week at Mono Lake and Yosemite. The lab called today and said my 8x10 Velvia exposures at Mono are on their way. Just really great enjoying your videos and catching the occasional pointer.😀

Wow .. 8 by 10 Velvia! One sheet of that is like 1.659 times a 35mm 36 exposure roll! Or, put another way, 60 shots of 35mm! That's pressure man!

Nick, I had always found it was a choice between either having a good negative or having a good print with this kind a film. I always chose for the good negative. I remember when Polaroid hit a dollar a sheet. I was outraged at the time with the high cost of instant film. Light leaks can be a problem when pulling the film cover out for exposure. I always used one hand to hold the film back and holder to prevent any movement that could cause a light leak. I always enjoy your videos. It takes me back to my large format days and my love of film photography.

Will never forget the day I shot my last Polaroid type 55 (10 years ago) I had kept a box in the fridge for a number of years, worked just fine when it had warmed up. Seem to remember it was 50 ISO? My students loved the magic of seeing the print and the edge marking on the negative rebates. At the time clearing the negative was done in a solution of sodium sulphite. Regards from Manchester U.K

This demonstrates the difference between film photography and digital photography. Not many people are willing to invest time and money in the craft of film photography as they did in the old days. With a digital camera its spray & pray. And there is something special about getting everything done in-camera "professional photographer" as opposed to using a photo-editor "graphic artist". The main benefit if the film is, that you can check the pictures on the spot. That’s what I used the Polaroid film for. Most of the time I then used other film to make a second or third exposer. Just to have different versions of the picture. But the Polaroid where always my favorite. So thank you for showing this new 55 .

A lesser person would have edited the mistakes out but to me it was fantastic to see the learning process unfold. I can only imagine how upset I would have been in your place but somehow seeing it in the third person was a great reminder on how difficult it can be to learn new techniques. There was an old saying when I was in art school doing Polaroid shooting in the late 70's: "There is always another day to redo the shoot" You did good Matt, Just wish Polaroid Originals company WOULD bring back Type 52 - 54 - 57 - and 59 film again instead of sitting n their Ass, and Gloat in what a product they have. If they can do 8x10 film, they can do 4x5, and medium format Peel apart film.. HEAR THAT POLAROID ORIGINALS IN HOLLAND WE WANT PEEL APART FILM AGAIN!!!!

Peel apart film from Polaroid Originals is never gonna happen. The reason they make 8x10 is because they rescued a 8x10 machine. By that time all other machines were already scrapped, except for the factory in the Netherlands.

If memory serves me, with the old Polaroid 55, you could get either a good print or a good negative but not both. The sensitivity is different for each.

@@nickcarverphoto That's correct. I'm currently still shooting Type 55 (old expired stuff) and it says on the package the print is 50ASA and the neg is 25ASA. So a full stop difference. Personally I like exposing for the print because it is DEADLY good looking when done right and the neg still has enough latitude to pull out a good exposure in the scan even though it's underexposed 1 stop.

@@saxmangeoff He did say that, but that was traditional film negatives he was referring to, not Polaroid. Original Polaroid Type 55 was in fact a different speed for the print and the negative. New55 was supposed to be the same but in my experience it is similar to old Polaroid, one stop different.

Love that you showed your mistakes. Every single person I know who has shot New55 has done the "I pulled out the dark slide too far" thing. I took a class from Sam Hiser from New55 a few years ago at Penumbra Foundation in New York and he specifically addressed how to fix that, but it requires taking the holder into a dark room and reassembling things. I think it would be better if instead of an inscrutable white mark, they printed "STOP PULLING" at that point on the dark slide. :-) Large format rewards mindfulness, and punishes lapses in mindfulness. It's very zen in that way, and I still make these mistakes even though I've been shooting New55 since it came out. I have to say I'm impressed with how quickly you figured out that the prints work better with dark backgrounds. Only took two packs. That said, I kind of love the swirliness of the skies I get with New55. It looks like a painting.

It's good to see the mistakes being kept in the footage. I've made schoolboy errors in the past two times I've taken my 4x5 into the field. Firstly the shutter on my 210mm has only a T setting and not the B setting which I prefer, and only after developing I found that on one exposure the shutter hadn't opened at all. The second time I was using a reciprocity app for shooting a sunset on Velvia 100. I'd earlier been shooting Delta 100 with a red filter and had accidentally left the filter dialled into the app, so I ended up overexposing my sunset for 3mins20secs when it should only have been 15 seconds.

Back in the early 90's, I was shooting TV stills for the BBC. Me and a bunch of newspaper shooters went to Tunisia to shoot publicity pictures on a new drama. All the news boys shot colour neg, processed it in their hotel room, scanned it and sent it back to their picture desks. You should have seen the chaos when we went through arrivals at Tunis airport, bags of white powder everywhere, the old Bill (police) went nuts :)) It was of course their dev powder. Great video, as ever. Nothing has really come close to the original polaroid, but your negs look pretty good.

All the old Polaroid with "usable" negative had this behaviour ... you had to choose between a perfect print and a perfect negative ... the new one, as I can see from your experience are much demanding on this ... I will try anyway for myself (after spending the last originals I still have!)

Exactly what Bruno said, and you might find it nice to keep some of the rebate on there too, the top has a cool texture. You can store it in water for a while before it hits fix, but too long in warm weather and the emulsion comes off. I discovered this one time while shooting and wandering around Bangkok, I'd just toss the shots into a tupperware of water and keep walking around. The resulting accident was actually quite beautiful. That said this was 665 and much less expensive then than what you are using. Great video!

Print development times are affected by ambient temperature. You should be able to lower the contrast and keep some of the upper range by adjusting the dev times.

Hello @@bthemedia mysteriously i cannot indicate nor find any occurence of this term on the web, but i remember assisting an English photographer in paris 6 years ago (when Fuji FP line was still around) and he told me that the irregularity on the instant film were called "Fern". i did not questionned his answer. which at the time seemed to make sense. i should also precise that it was an old guy with probably more experience than my age. maybe it was just a personnal preference for him.

Looked up fern, and I found it right away. You see, you went at looking for it backwards. There are different deckle designs. Deckle it the process, and like "fern" is the particular pattern or cut. Remember "pinking sheers?" Now they come in different cutting designs, one of them called "shark fin." That might also be an offshoot of a slang pronunciation of fern/fin. Let me know what you find out. Raymond

Years ago at the Northern Michigan Photostock event one of the photographers had the trunk of his car full of all the chemicals for wet plate photography. He was paranoid about NO SMOKING downwind of his trunk due to the pungent ether fumes.. Another photographer there was a small-town fire chief; after smelling the ether and looking at the trunk of the car he told the wet plate photographer that if he was stopped by a cop on the way home we'd never hear from him again. They'd throw him jail and bury the key. Joe, I've always been glad that you didn't speed on your way home! :)

Congrats on an awesome video. I loved seeing the step by step process unfold, from loading the film into the camera and messin’ with the dark slide, to the peeling of the film negative/print and developing back at your truck. Although the mistakes were expensive and painful, it was real!

Always enjoy your video's. I'm glad to see your human and the mistakes are consistent with the process. Everyone using large format can feel your pain in those cases. I'm glad you included them and admire the fact there were no swear words. I think I would have gone nuts burning the $$$. You turn negative events into positive one's and I think that is a true gift. Great video Nick. I love that you leave the mistakes in the video, and not edit them out. It's real, happens to the best of us. That dune texture negative is beautiful.

I like that you show your mistakes. We can all learn. Still make mistakes but it helps when the pros do it, doesn't feel so bad. Great video. Love the Mojave Preserve.

Just today I took my first two exposures of 4x5 film on an Anniversary Speed Graphic. Fingers crossed I did a good job and I’ll be able to develop them competently. If not I’ll take comfort in the fact that even a pro like you makes mistakes. Thanks for sharing.

You are pushing the boundaries Nick. Shooting in a way no one else goes.I like that. The negs looked so good. I love the simplicity of your images. You may have made the odd mistake, but there’s no getting away from the fact that you are a master craftsman.

I was at Joshua Tree about 3 weeks ago, and I saw the signs to watch out for bees. Didn't see any but glad I didn't either. There's nothing like being out in the desert by yourself shooting the landscape. I can relate to your mishaps as I used to shoot LF as well, and made similar goof ups. Love your videos. Looking forward to the next one. BTW I love the desert, being from Canada.

hi nick great video, that sinking pain of leaving the shutter open, its bad enough on film but 15 bucks a shot MAN I FEEL THE PAIN... Been binge watching all your videos and i must say i love them all. I must of watched the sonoran desert video about 10 times. Inspired me to build my own 6x17 camera from scratch. The first negatives from it just blew me away.....

I shot a couple boxes of new55 for a magazine job a couple years ago in New York City, then drove back to Boston with a bunch of dripping wet negatives hanging from wire in the back of my Subaru. DEFINITELY support waiting until you get back to the studio to develop everything to cut out that headache. BEES.
