Here’s another on-location video for you. This time I’m traveling far into the field, deep into the wilderness. It’s an expedition so grand that it would make Sir Ernest Shackleton himself quiver in his boots.
Nah, I’m just going to Anaheim.
You may know Anaheim as the home to Disneyland and the Mighty Ducks, but I know it as a place with a cool-looking tire shop where I made a KZfaq video about taking pictures with my 6x17 camera. And hey here comes a spoiler alert. Seriously, don’t read any further if you want your surprises un-spoiled in this video. Are you ready? Okay here goes. I shot it on CineStill 800T film. teehee I know! So exciting! Before this outing, I’d never shot CineStill before. It was an experience. A learning experience, no doubt. But I am happy with the results. It’s a fun film to use.
Now I of course shot it on Kodak Portra 400, too. I’m comfortable with that film and I didn’t want to blow this shoot trying something new - especially on a film that costs fourteen bucks a roll. Portra was kind of my failsafe here. So on top of watching me descend into madness trying to make this composition happen, you’ll also get to see these 2 films compared. So you know, a fun time was had by all!
The camera you see me using in this video is a Shen Hao TFC 617-A with a Rodenstock 115mm lens. I use this combo A LOT for my “architectural” work. And I put “architectural” in quotes because I don’t really consider these types of photos architectural. They’re more like my slow, tripod-based attempt at street photography. Okay I know it’s not “street” photography as we all know it, but I guess I consider it some sort of hybrid between architectural, landscape, and street photography. I need to come up with a name for it.
Anyway, thanks for watching!

@@nickcarverphoto Hiya, Nick, a question from someone not familiar with filming for movies. You mentioned that reciprocity is not encountered in a movie camera. Is that simply because they run 24 frames a second through them and thus there is no prolonged exposure time? Have you considered, if you want to block a streetlight out, making a blind that can hook over those thumb screws on your camera so you don't have to tie up a hand holding it? Also, it'll reduce the chance you might shake the camera during a timed exposure. You were concerned that the piece of plastic blinding the streetlight might show up in the photo. If you had it mounted rather than hand held you could look through the view finder to verify it isn't. Just a thought.

So I was getting new tires the other day, and there's this road worker in the median making survey measurements. The weird thing is that there was no guy with the stick to be found. I thought the guy was up to no good. I got closer but then it was clear that he had a toothpick in his mouth. I immediately retreated.

I like the way the CineStill give a bit of a slight sickly green tint to the fluro lights rather than the warm cast the Portra gives. The shot feels more sunlit with the Portra whereas the Cinestill is more "hey, look at this shop, it's not natural!" and I love that juxtaposition.

I know the frustration...I once went to a location (sunrise over an ocean pool with glassy water in the pool. Always had some crazy person swimming laps in the middle of winter. I went 10 times to get that particular shot. The 10th time I was just expecting the same as the other times,....BUT, this time there was no one there, the conditions were perfect, I was so excited to finally get the shot. Patience and persistence is often a requirement.

Great video, Nick. I died laughing at the Cinestill gas station joke. You mentioned that you don't film a lot of on location because sometimes it is a lot of failing before you get the shot. I actually love seeing that persistence in your videos. Social media has a way of distorting people's view of reality and you see all these great images and when I go out the light doesn't work, or there's no clouds so the image is just boring, and I get frustrated. It's good for people to see that you are actually just working hard for the images you get and you sometimes have to keep going back to get the image you want. I've been trying to incorporate that more into my photography and it has helped a ton.

First of all I love these videos. I GREATLY appreciate that you show the frustrations of shooting on location. As for Cinestill vs Portra. That's a tough one. The Cinestill looks more lonesome and desolate with the cooler tones. The portrait evokes a place that while not exactly welcoming at least wasn't abandoned by people, if that makes sense.

To be honest, I actually really like to see videos like the beginning of this one, where you fail at something. Not because I _want_ to see you fail, but because when I do see you fail, I see the same struggles I deal with myself. Often times I get an idea in my head of the perfect shot, spend the time to drive there, get everything set up and ready to go, and then one minor (or major) thing ruins the entire image. I end up feeling like a "fake" photographer, and that any "real" photographer wouldn't have had that issue, would be able to work around it, or would have seen it a mile away. Seeing something go wrong with other people's shoots helps to remind me that, no, sometimes stuff happens no matter who you are. Just because you put in the effort of going to a location doesn't mean you are entitled to the image you wanted to get. It's a hard pill to swallow, but I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in those failed attempts.

One way to get rid of the helation (somewhat) is to use a mist filter. The diffused light "covers" the helation area. Karin Majoka just did a nice comparison of taking pictures with and without a mist filter on her channel.
