I’ve spent a lot of time driving the streets and highways of Orange County, CA. I grew up here, I work here. There’s a lot of beauty to be found in this county, and I don’t just mean the postcard-quality beaches. Nor do I mean the bleach-blonde hair and fake ta-ta’s. No, I’m talking about the buildings, the history, the little vignettes of lived-in structures and forgotten scenes sprinkled throughout its landscape. I’m talking about the relics of Orange County.
So with the towns somewhat emptied of their usual bustling activity, I set out to photograph some compositions that I’d been wanting to strike off my checklist for some time now. It would be done just the way I like: Kodak Portra 160 or 400 using my Shen-Hao TFC 617-a panoramic camera…mostly in that beautiful dawn light.
I had 4 locations in mind: a dilapidated roadside motel in the city of Orange, a delightful little donut shop just down the street, a junkyard in Santa Ana, and one hell of a tree in Old Towne Orange. I’d scouted the locations fully, I knew what I wanted to do, now it was just a matter of getting out there with my tripod, some rolls of film, and 2 lenses (my Rodenstock 115mm and my Nikkor 150mm).
Sometimes getting the shot requires getting a little uncomfortable. Sometimes it requires dressing like an idiot. I did both in this one. But I’m happy to say that the pictures were worth it. Perhaps more than the results themselves, it just feels good to strike things off the list - to get those images in my head out and onto film.
Or maybe I just needed something to do while the world is at a standstill.
Whatever the case, here is a video of me taking pictures. Enjoy!

I fully endorse the safety vest idea. A few years ago, I started wearing those neon yellow safety jackets with the reflective silver stripes (like the ones on your vest) any time I'm shooting in a "sensitive" area. Works like a charm! Everyone assumes I'm with the gas company or I'm a land surveyor, etc. Cops drive by and wave. Its the perfect disguise!

Nick, the funny thing is, as a surveyor, when we're on the side of the road in our hi-vis vests and with our survey instruments on a big goofy tripod everyone thinks we're "taking pictures" with that "big camera." Of course they also think we're "working with the po-po." Be safe.

Superb images!! I’ve been studying street photographers who used colour film and colour slide film, back in the 50’s when colour was not popular. The scenes back then would seem ordinary at the time, but that’s not the point. As the years and decades rolled by and the streets and buildings changed, these photographs became more and more important and today they are precious and have catapulted the photographer from obscurity to fame. The photographs you take will, I have no doubt, make you famous in the art world in decades from now. In fact, the scenes of modern life I take today will date very quickly as time goes by and become more relevant in the future. There will be photographers not born yet, who will reference Nick Carver’s work as revolutionary at the time. Mark my words, that day will come and you will have made a dent in the world of photography. That high vis jacket was a master stroke. I knew you’d get a donut!!

I worked just up Chapman from that motel, at Adray's. Both the big building that is now a medical office and the old hole in the wall that was located at the opposite end of the strip mall next door. Those were the days. I love your videos for two reasons, one is that they remind me of when I'd go out shooting and two, I lived in Santa Ana, Orange and El Toro for over 55 years and it brings back fond memories now that I've retired to SW Utah. I was going to have so much fun here shooting landscapes, and then my legs crapped out on me within a year and I can't walk without a lot of pain and surgery is out of the question because of Lymphedema. Back to that motel, back in the late 80's I got into shooting retro/vintage and I always wanted to do a shoot at that motel or this other old one on PCH in Huntington Beach (which got spruced up before I could find the right model). Then I got too busy managing Olympic Camera, and later, Adray's.

Ah-hahaha, my best friend was married in that Catholic church and somewhere before or after the ceremony I also photographed that tree. I wonder if I could find those photos? It's only been 45 years. Not only that but for years, every Friday, I drove my mom to the senior care facility next door to get her hair done at the salon on the top floor. Hart Park across the street has some nice old buildings at the swimming pool. I used to go down Glassel to the Circle and shoot a lot of the buildings and homes in the area. The Sunkist building was interesting and the owner let me inside the gate to take pictures. The Army Navy Store used to be interesting. Sometimes it's more interesting to shoot from behind the stores. Thanks (again) for yet another jog to fond memories from when my mom was alive, best friend marriage, swimming in the park pool.

Really enjoyed this video. My favourite was the Donut shop (Homer Simpson Doh!). Just a beautiful capture. Very 'Hopper'-esque, if you catch my drift. The whole composition from left to right was is just a wonderful visual story. BTW: I learned the 'construction vest' trick from a buddy who worked for the railway company here in the UK. It makes you so invisible there is a danger of people colliding with you while you work! (Might consider adding a construction hat to round out the ensemble).

I didn't know what to expect with the tree shot, but I was blown away! Absolutely loved the final result. Def my favorite of the 4 subjects.

Thanks for a very entertaining video Nick! I'm always amazed at your subjects and style. Your unique eye for subjects really sets you apart from most photographers. Different strokes for different folks I guess. All that was missing was a glass of fine spirits on the rocks! I love your videos when you go out in the field. BTW, I've been using the workers vest for years now. It usually works perfectly.

Thank you for the kind words! High-viz vest plus a glass of whiskey and a large format camera...I think the cops would put me in a straight jacket.

Moreton Bay Figs are awesome. Fun fact: Native to my home country - Australia. Another brilliantly shot and edited piece mate. Hope you and yours stay safe - keep up the great work 👍🏻👍🏻

Between this and the eucalyptus tree (of which there are many planted in my hometown), Australia has given us some damn good trees. At least, I think the eucalyptus is also from Australia.

@@nickcarverphoto yep - the eucalyptus are from here. I always get a bit of a surprise when I see our native trees show up on golf coverage I watch from the US. I never get tired of going out to native bushland in Australia looking for photos - the eucalypts have that unique smell and the wildlife they harbour is amazing. Have you been out here?

@@brendancameraphoto2121 I've never been to Australia, but the more I watch of All 4 Adventure (which is a lot), the more I want to come visit.

"In fact, I'd love it if that sweet station wagon in the back was up front and center." I thought the exact same thing when I saw it. I gotta admit that I really liked the first light motel shot. It felt like like it was time to have a good cup of coffee. The vest by the way... brilliant!

There is a donut shop here in NJ where all the donuts are plain cake and they are dipped in chocolate on one side. The chocolate acts as a "glue" to hold on an assortment of various toppings such as Cap'n Crunch, Lucky Charms and Trix cereal. The shop itself has a "Night Hawks" kind of vibe, except that it's all take out and there is no counter to sit at. I love those old businesses from the days of Noah that keep going despite everything else. As always, I enjoy your work.
