Searching for British Wild Boar - Forest of Dean

I went searching for my very first sighting of wild boar in the UK. I've seen them in France, Spain and Sweden - so it was about time I caught up with them in their UK stronghold - the Forest of Dean. Feel free to comment any questions, I'll answer all that I can. Wild boar were hunted to extinction in the UK, twice! But they are now back and providing a hugely valuable service to the natural ecosystems in our native woodlands.
Once we have re-adjusted to seeing 'messy' roadside verges, we'll hopefully realise the huge benefits boar provide by turning over the grassy vegetation and allowing more disturbance-loving wildflower species to become established again. The knock-on impact along the food chain is massive and wild boar could be pivotal to saving some of our rarest birds. Recent evidence is indicating that prior to the advent of farming, turtle doves evolved to feed on the annual seeds that grew in the peripheral disturbed soils created by...wild boar!

Fascinating. Thanks so so much for not adding the muzak (except at the end) that too many 'nature' photographers seem to regard as an essential accompaniment to their footage. I wish film-makers wouldn't hide the real sounds - positive and negative (car engines?) - of the beautiful forest of Dean.

I would love to see our indigenous wildlife return. However I think we've destroyed too much woodland to really make it viable. That said we have successfully reintroduced beavers/fishing eagles so who knows. The UK killed off most of its large predators like wolves/bears/lynx faster than any other country in Europe. That coupled with deforestation will make reintroduction a real challangeb

Haha, yes…as if Scotland was your little wildlife paddock. Wonder what the Scottish would say. It’s all a romantic dream in a land where when these creatures thrived we had roughly 70 times less people and probably 70 times more forest and wild areas. Gotta get real.

The boar you filmed outside Speech House have ended up on some ones table, because of humans feeding them they lost their natural instinct to run away. These are wild animals and should be treated as such. I live in the heart of the forest, I see boar and other wild life on a daily basis and I treat them with respect and keep my distance.

They're incredibly destructive to the environment and breed quite rapidly. 2 to 3 litters a year. The ones in the video are quite young I would say 6 to 12 months old. If you were a farmer, you would want them on the dinner table because a single boar contaminate 4 acres in 1 night and they tend to travel in sounders. They're shot and whatnot in the USA. Good luck on managing them.

It does bother me how there are such heated debates about these creatures. Boar can be a nuisance and can wreck gardens & crops and I appreciate that, but when the immediate answer to what was once a common, native species (and still is in the rest of the continent) to Britain is 'cull them within an inch of their existence', I can't help but find it troubling. We could put up with these things a 1,000 years ago. Does this creature's rights become nullified due to its nature as a 'back from the dead' species? It it because of its status as a relative nuisance? Would we ever be having this conversation about British otters? They have the capacity to devastate lakes and over indulge in killing carp, but we made concerted efforts to keep this species around after near extinction. Incidentally, what I WILL say is that it opens questions as to the relaxation of firearms laws to defend oneself if things get a little hairy. As you say, they have the capacity to be very hardy and I've seen videos of boar in other places charging people. They're not easy to put down, either. England hasn't had a real potentially dangerous animal to concern itself with in centuries; I think it's a conversation worth having if we're going to let this species proliferate (which I'm ultimately in favour of).

Well…that was yesteryear when 70odd million people were less than 2 million. Be realistic and remember to contextualise everything. The pressures on the land now do not suit a dangerous animal being loose. The way we look at death now is also key, it was an expectation to lose kids to all manner of thing back then…now it’s totally not expected or accepted. It’s all very nice to try to live the way we used to but it’s quite stupid to try to actually realise it. Wait till a kid gets killed then see how it is.
@TedH71

The reason they were in low numbers back then was due to extensive hunting. They are really destructive to farmers and one single boar will ruin 4 acres in 1 night. That's how bad it is.They can have 2 to 3 litters a year.

UK is way overpopulated. The island cant provide enough food to sustain their entire population with their current antiquated propduction systems. From what i read, the biodiversity crisis has hit a critical level in the UK this year. So until changes happen with the current system, it will be difficult for wild animals such as the boar to exist.
