Our handling of drug issues is just about as damaging as the drugs themselves. Trauma is the real gateway drug, and locking up people does absolutely nothing to treat the underlying issues. If we really cared about these people, we'd be focused on recovery rather than police busts.

ohio's weather is one of the worst states. grey winter with saltice slushies up to your knees for like 5 months of the year. Poor sunlight, constant grey skies. The summers have the bad aspects of summer, too. It might not be texas but in a lot of places (especially NE Ohio) its very humid so its just as uncomfortable. Very depressing weather. Also the amount of tornadoes is pretty high (though its not kansas). I will always miss the small town I grew up in up there, but when I reminisce its always springtime. There were some decent people, too (although its quite a mix of different types of people)

I have lived in Ohio most of my life . Columbus, Cleveland terrible crime drugs . Toledo not to bad, small towns are nice like Norwalk, Bellevue but nothing to do. Lower crime in small towns.

I lived in northwest Ohio for 10 years (2003-2013) and it wasn't bad. Small towns and good schools. The GM plants in Defiance and 50 miles away in Fort Wayne, IN largely pour much of the income into the area. Long cold winters, a ticket-happy state police and not a lot to do. The people were generally nice.

Those jobs were always going to leave. An industrial economy naturally evolves into the more lucrative service economy built upon an educated populace. Columbus was able to see this coming and is now the booming economy center of Ohio. It wasn’t outsourcing. It was the lack of a diversified economy and the willful ignorance of not preparing for the future.

It easy to say diversify, but reality is if everyplace did that then diversity loses it effectiveness.

How so? Diversify just means don't build the local economy around a single industry because if that industry declines then so does the city because there's nothing else to help pick up the slack and keep the economy running.

Yes, Youngstown is finally starting to realize that broader streets with more walking areas and greenery is the way to go like what they did to W Front St. Utilizing the older buildings instead of tearing them down into parking lots is a great start. It’s like Youngstown realized the Highway Act of 1956 had horrible consequences and they want to go bad to how it was in the 40s and 50s. The more people start living downtown, the more places will open up and the more the city will open up pedestrian traffic! Downtown is looking brighter than it was 10 years ago 😄

I lived in Youngstown for a couple of years, and I loved it. Nicest people anywhere. Cheapest place to live. Close to almost anything you might need. I keep trying to convince my girlfriend to pick up a cheap second home in Youngstown, but I haven't quite gotten there yet. 😂

I live in Boardman right on the edge of Mill Creek park. The suburbs are nice and even downtown Youngstown is pretty nice these days . But sadly most neighborhoods in the city are horrendous.

We live in Parma, not originally from the area. Took my daughter out to lake view cemetery to go for a walk this past summer only to realize it was closed for the day. So I kept going straight. I was completely heart broken. The road lead me straight to East Cleveland and it literally hurt my heart to see that people live in such a state of poverty.

@@emilyb3875 alot of churches downtown help the homeless and addicts you can call 211 and ask them for a few listings for places excepting volunteers and let them know that you want to help addicts/ homeless people I'm sure they have tons of places and some probably close to you. Churches helped alot rather it was for aa meetings a warm cup of coffee or food when they give boxes of food out.

Columbus was the only 'rust belt' city to actually continue to thrive and gain population at its city center during the 1980's recession! Some of the outlying suburbs are very posh and the average person certainly can't afford to live there? Think, New Albany,Westerville and Bexley as being home to the new affluent...

@Gary Dawson that's not true. Columbus is booming and is a great place for young people. Cincinnati is getting quite gentrified and becoming a better city for college educated workers. Yeah there are many awful small towns and dead industrial centers but the areas that are embracing the knowledge economy are doing fine

It's nearly impossible to ever own your own home, open a business, or even raise a family of more than one child and feel secure if you aren't born upper middle class in Europe. Many people have 2 or 3 college degrees (college is practically free!) but they can't find a job and so they're 40 and sharing a flat with their other unmarried friends, working a full-time job where it's just enough to pay the bills and go out on the weekends. The city is investing in the Hall of Fame Village and hoping it pops of as the Disneyland of the Midwest. This is a mistake. It's took six years for it to even begin developing and it has been losing money and at one point ran out of it. Another thing to point out is that the Hall of Fame is not really a money maker. I mean it makes money compared to other Hall of Fames but it will take a while to make its money back on the Village. On the Hall of Fame weekend it brings in about $40M. While that is extra money the city needs it is not groundbreaking money. No body wants this. Canton itself is not very touristy. There is not much to do here. I don't think the city thought this through. During winter it will also lose any potential visitors to warmer spots such as Disney World. The city needs to invest in more important areas like manufacturing. Canton can also fix its transportation as the buses does not run on Sundays which hurts those in poverty. One more thing about the city is its startup incubator. Its laughable. "We have a beer keg guys! Come bring your talent here." Why would anyone want to launch a startup here with very little talent to be found as they are in Columbus, lack of VC funding and just a boring city life? Not to mention the gun shots going off every night. I know I'm not. I'm sorry for the rant but as you can see NE Ohio has a lot and I'm just done with Canton. I'm a Midwestern at heart but it seems that I'm going to move back overseas and HQ my US base in Seattle. I'm just happier in Asia and if I could I would HQ in the Midwest but it just doesn't have the same benefit as the East cost as listed above. I'm not worried about Columbus but the rest of the states investments. Ohio has a lot of potential but God damn it got hit.

I have wanted to do one of the tours there but thanks to leg damage and multiple surgeries I would have to do the ghost tour so I could go around on my own time. I would not listen to this man. Sure, there are some more impoverished areas, drugs, crime. But you hear about some of those areas probably somewhere in each state. And you don't throw a whole city out just because some areas aren't as great. You help those in need in whatever way you can. Some give time to various ways to help, some give money, some give both. Just don't give up. Look for the good. A few years ago, I was up in Cleveland for several days. I went to an Ozzy concert at one of the best outdoor venues I've seen. Like, literally a huge open amphitheater in a wooded area with food courts in little villages at the woodedsides. I went to the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and wandered around the waterfront. We went to one of their public beaches, which was a beautiful, huge public park with newer facilities. One of my friends lives in a suburb called Twinsburg, where they have a twins festival every year. I'm sure there are those abandoned neighborhoods he showed in Cleveland, but that's only part of the city. I travel a lot. Whenever I go somewhere, I look up the local tourist activities, museums, parks, festivals. There's always things to do and see. Small town shops, town squares, gardens... And I often travel by myself, but I'm never lonely because I always find nice people to chat with, etc here and there. Sometimes it's a short conversation on a train ride, sometimes helping someone in need get somewhere,sometimes finding kindred souls to hang out with... Plenty of great goodness to be thankful for.

You have to understand all that is a result of jobs being sold to other countrys. It is a republicans way out of debt and has caused many cities to end up this way They are self made issues your leaders do not have the ability to fix.....white people think other white people are happy if they can use drugs and still be considered the chosen race.

I'm from a small village out in the country of Ohio as well. In between Zanesville, Coshocton and Newark. Nothing but hills, cows, corn, beans and trees.

Depends where you live. I’ve been to all the towns mentioned. I lived in two of them (Middletown and Dayton...The Capital of Kentucky). I agree the all suck. But for each of those there’s a Columbus or Delaware or Dublin or Powell or Mason and a plethora of small towns and villages that are charming places to live like Greenville, Celina, Marysville, Bellefountain, etc,. The issue in Ohio is that to earn a decent living you need to have a marketable skill. In that respect our public school system in Ohio is failing us. By economic resources available Ohio should rank in the top ten in attainment of a post secondary education but we actually rank around 25th. The top States are achieving between 30-40%. Ohio is around 25%. Improving that statistic by only 5# would go a long way to help the economic woes we have in some of our post industrial cities and in rural communities. Keep in mind by post secondary education I don’t mean just College. I mean Trade, Technical and Artisan schools too.

Youngstown is TERRIFIC! He's VERY serious about housing costs. Got a house that goes straight into Mill Creek Park. Deers walking thru my backyard , I love it.
