Drugs are ruining almost every town in America....the world for that matter

Our handling of drug issues is just about as damaging as the drugs themselves. Trauma is the real gateway drug, and locking up people does absolutely nothing to treat the underlying issues. If we really cared about these people, we'd be focused on recovery rather than police busts.

@@christinacope562 drugging will certainly lead to poverty. But I have worked with many men in a steel fabrication shop who made top wages and benefits, who have wrecked their lives with meth. I know at least two who's careers got them in the front office. While some had a sketchy past, all were talented and given opportunity for a good life.
@christinacope562
@christinacope562 3 жыл бұрын
@@scottowensbyable absolutely agree with you. Those in poverty tend to get overwhelmed and overlooked, our nation has not dealt with the issue correctly in my opinion. That said, it was just normal for the[now gone]employees @GM to routinely go into the plant drunk/drugged and continue at home or local bar. Drug busts inside were common. Why that occurred with well paid with benefits had to have a root cause. The praise a few years ago for Hillbilly Elegy by J D Vance did well describing his family members(I disagree with him on some points he's made). There's some who just can't keep a dollar in their pocket. Many caught up in multigenerational dysfunction. People are strange. And my life just just nosedived this afternoon.

Ope, have you looked into the why? Most haven't. Don't stop at the effect, find the cause as well. I take it you don't approve. You want it to stop. Then you are forced to go after the cause instead of the effect. Only half way done, dude. Nip it at the cause or it will not end. Don't feel too bad, polititions only look at the effect and that's why they always miss the mark!

I’m in no way a snowflake, but I found myself saying “wow cut us a break over here!” several times in this video lol. Ohio is a great state in my opinion. No crazy severe weather, no extreme wildlife predators, and you get to enjoy all four seasons; sometimes all in one day! I was born in Columbus and moved up to Lorain county (west side of Cleveland) around the age of 2 and have lived here ever since. Granted, I grew up in Grafton which is a small rural town that doesn’t even have a stoplight downtown anymore since they removed the only one recently. I LOVE it here. Yea, I can drive about 25 minutes and hit really bad parts of Lorain county, but being a local you just learn the areas to avoid, and honestly none seem to be so bad that I wouldn’t be comfortable at least driving my car through it. (With the exception of a few government housing projects) Crime happens everywhere. Ohio is truly a sight to be seen in many different areas and the people are neighborly and nice. I don’t foresee myself moving away any time soon! West side is the best side ;)

ohio's weather is one of the worst states. grey winter with saltice slushies up to your knees for like 5 months of the year. Poor sunlight, constant grey skies. The summers have the bad aspects of summer, too. It might not be texas but in a lot of places (especially NE Ohio) its very humid so its just as uncomfortable. Very depressing weather. Also the amount of tornadoes is pretty high (though its not kansas). I will always miss the small town I grew up in up there, but when I reminisce its always springtime. There were some decent people, too (although its quite a mix of different types of people)

I lived in northwest Ohio for 10 years (2003-2013) and it wasn't bad. Small towns and good schools. The GM plants in Defiance and 50 miles away in Fort Wayne, IN largely pour much of the income into the area. Long cold winters, a ticket-happy state police and not a lot to do. The people were generally nice.

It really sucks to see how places in your state was destroyed by the outsourcing of jobs.
@NamelessProducts

Those jobs were always going to leave. An industrial economy naturally evolves into the more lucrative service economy built upon an educated populace. Columbus was able to see this coming and is now the booming economy center of Ohio. It wasn’t outsourcing. It was the lack of a diversified economy and the willful ignorance of not preparing for the future.

The first house I ever bought was in Youngstown Ohio for less then $20k. I still own that house. Its a tolerable commute to Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Akron for work and although it still has plenty of poor areas, crime has been steadily dropping. The downtown area has cleaned up a good bit as well and they have a really nice metropark system, botanical gardens, two play houses, a symphony orchestra, a Warner Theatre, minor league hockey and baseball teams, a museum of american art and Youngstown State. Surrounding suburbs like Boardman, Poland and Canfield are pretty nice. If you work remote and are looking for an area that has a cheap cost of living to make your paycheck go further, Youngstown would be a good choice. The expense of sending your kids to private schools is nothing when you consider the housing and property tax savings.
@legocat0306
@legocat0306 6 ай бұрын
Yes, Youngstown is finally starting to realize that broader streets with more walking areas and greenery is the way to go like what they did to W Front St. Utilizing the older buildings instead of tearing them down into parking lots is a great start. It’s like Youngstown realized the Highway Act of 1956 had horrible consequences and they want to go bad to how it was in the 40s and 50s. The more people start living downtown, the more places will open up and the more the city will open up pedestrian traffic! Downtown is looking brighter than it was 10 years ago 😄

I grew up in Dayton, Ohio during the 1950's and lived there until the 1980's and still have many friends and ties there. You need to update your view of the area. Millions of dollars have been invested in the downtown area with a great number of people returning downtown to live. The demand for redeveloped and new housing downtown remains strong,. This is also is having an impact on the surrounding neighborhoods as well. Wright Patterson Air Force Base is the largest single site employer in the state. NCR's leaving had an impact but when it moved to the Atlanta area, it was a shell of its former self. Health care providers are among the largest employers in the area around the University of Dayton and Miami Valley Hospital continues to redevelop and thrive. The former county fairgrounds across from Miami Valley Hospital is being redeveloped in cooperation with the University of Dayton. Dayton is continuing to evolve as it always has. While I no longer live there, my family and friends are a strong pull on my loyalties. Please consult the Dayton Daily News for more information.

Despite wanting to go to a warmer climate when I was younger, as an adult and having experienced lots of different places, Ohio is a great place to live. We are not running out of water like some states, I'm born and bread in Ohio and will be here forever. Lots of good stuff goes on in my state. Grew up miles from the pro football hall of fame and have spent 12 years in a small farming town just north of Akron (we have more cows then people.) Our state is beautiful, we have an environment for just about everyone and enjoy all four seasons…most of us aren’t as rude and misinformed as this video’s information…we tend to rally together and do whatever we can to help our neighbors. Since my arrival back I was and still am completely shocked at the Haiten population here it has more then doubled the number of residents here. Pretty much the whole inner city now belongs to this group. That would be a great video topic for you to cover.

In the 70s, steel execs went to Japan and taught them how to make steel while we weren’t modernizing. Japan blew up in the 80s, could make a decent car, while the yen was low. Steel tanking and years of crummy cars killed Ohio. Then with poverty and drugs those towns couldn’t recover. So much potential lost.

@@Arizona_rider - Every town has two sides, including in Europe. There are the thriving sections and the rundown sections. The more I travel, the more I remark that people are pretty much the same everywhere and like people flock together. The main difference between Europe (or other more socialist places) and the U.S. is that it's much more difficult to move between classes. If you're born poor in Europe, you remain poor. It's nearly impossible to ever own your own home, open a business, or even raise a family of more than one child and feel secure if you aren't born upper middle class in Europe. Many people have 2 or 3 college degrees (college is practically free!) but they can't find a job and so they're 40 and sharing a flat with their other unmarried friends, working a full-time job where it's just enough to pay the bills and go out on the weekends. Is that your preferred way of living? Have you spent much time abroad?

Going to the worst cities in every state is no way to give a true perspective on the entire state. I've lived all over the Midwest and even grew up in one of the cities featured in this lovely video. (I've lived in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Indiana.) Yes, Ohio has been hurt badly by the loss of manufacturing, but Columbus is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and the state has three cities with metro areas of over a million people. The lack of jobs leads to hopelessness and way too many people have turned to drugs to dull their pain, but that isn't the total story in Ohio.

@@randyspears9827 Ahh! Your from the good part of Ohio. I'm from Canton and it looks like a bomb went off. The city is investing in the Hall of Fame Village and hoping it pops of as the Disneyland of the Midwest. This is a mistake. It's took six years for it to even begin developing and it has been losing money and at one point ran out of it. Another thing to point out is that the Hall of Fame is not really a money maker. I mean it makes money compared to other Hall of Fames but it will take a while to make its money back on the Village. On the Hall of Fame weekend it brings in about $40M. While that is extra money the city needs it is not groundbreaking money. No body wants this. Canton itself is not very touristy. There is not much to do here. I don't think the city thought this through. During winter it will also lose any potential visitors to warmer spots such as Disney World. The city needs to invest in more important areas like manufacturing. Canton can also fix its transportation as the buses does not run on Sundays which hurts those in poverty. One more thing about the city is its startup incubator. Its laughable. "We have a beer keg guys! Come bring your talent here." Why would anyone want to launch a startup here with very little talent to be found as they are in Columbus, lack of VC funding and just a boring city life? Not to mention the gun shots going off every night. I know I'm not. I'm sorry for the rant but as you can see NE Ohio has a lot and I'm just done with Canton. I'm a Midwestern at heart but it seems that I'm going to move back overseas and HQ my US base in Seattle. I'm just happier in Asia and if I could I would HQ in the Midwest but it just doesn't have the same benefit as the East cost as listed above. I'm not worried about Columbus but the rest of the states investments. Ohio has a lot of potential but God damn it got hit.

I would not listen to this man. Sure, there are some more impoverished areas, drugs, crime. But you hear about some of those areas probably somewhere in each state. And you don't throw a whole city out just because some areas aren't as great. You help those in need in whatever way you can. Some give time to various ways to help, some give money, some give both. Just don't give up. Look for the good. A few years ago, I was up in Cleveland for several days. I went to an Ozzy concert at one of the best outdoor venues I've seen. Like, literally a huge open amphitheater in a wooded area with food courts in little villages at the woodedsides. I went to the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and wandered around the waterfront. We went to one of their public beaches, which was a beautiful, huge public park with newer facilities. One of my friends lives in a suburb called Twinsburg, where they have a twins festival every year. I'm sure there are those abandoned neighborhoods he showed in Cleveland, but that's only part of the city. I travel a lot. Whenever I go somewhere, I look up the local tourist activities, museums, parks, festivals. There's always things to do and see. Small town shops, town squares, gardens... And I often travel by myself, but I'm never lonely because I always find nice people to chat with, etc here and there. Sometimes it's a short conversation on a train ride, sometimes helping someone in need get somewhere,sometimes finding kindred souls to hang out with... Plenty of great goodness to be thankful for.

Depends where you live. I’ve been to all the towns mentioned. I lived in two of them (Middletown and Dayton...The Capital of Kentucky). I agree the all suck. But for each of those there’s a Columbus or Delaware or Dublin or Powell or Mason and a plethora of small towns and villages that are charming places to live like Greenville, Celina, Marysville, Bellefountain, etc,. The issue in Ohio is that to earn a decent living you need to have a marketable skill. In that respect our public school system in Ohio is failing us. By economic resources available Ohio should rank in the top ten in attainment of a post secondary education but we actually rank around 25th. The top States are achieving between 30-40%. Ohio is around 25%. Improving that statistic by only 5# would go a long way to help the economic woes we have in some of our post industrial cities and in rural communities. Keep in mind by post secondary education I don’t mean just College. I mean Trade, Technical and Artisan schools too.

I've been to Toledo several times, the Zoo is one of the top in the nation, they have a great Chrysler Jeep factory. Promedica bought up downtown Toledo and revitalized it, there is a ton of old buildings now being turned into condos. They have a Jeep Festival yearly, promedica concert series, huge stadium for their local mud hens baseball team. The Huntington Center which is massive is where they have their hockey games and concerts. An award-winning art museum. A ton of hospitals that employ thousands of people and it's only an hour's drive to Canada which is pretty neat. It sits on a great lake, so water sports or boating is fun. The winters can be brutal though.
