Is everyone in Boston crazy or what? Are people in Boston stuck up and rude? And does Boston have the most die hard sports fans of all?
We’re gonna answer those questions and a whole lot more. Like we’re going to talk about what it’s like to live in Boston, what all the different neighborhoods are like, and even talk to people who live there.
Boston. One of America’s finest cities. There’s tons of stuff to do here, it’s relatively safe and it’s EXPENSIVE. But it’s expensive in just about any coastal city in this country, come on now. Boston folks are tough and opinionated. But once you crack that outer shell, they’re pretty cool underneath. Boston is not necessarily an unfriendly place, but don't expect anyone to say hello to you in passing.
Where are the good and bad areas in Boston and what parts of the city are good for you? Well, in order to know that, we should look at a map and see the different areas. Then we can look at each area one by one.
This is Boston. As you can tell, there’s lots of great areas and some really bad ones. Another couple themes we’ll see are that Boston is being gentrified FAST and it’s really expensive to live in the Boston metro area. Like double the national average. But that high price tag gets you good quality, everyone.
The crime is not too bad. If you measured the largest cities in the country, Boston doesn’t rank in the top 100 for bad crime. So that’s good.
Politics wise, this is a VERY liberal city. It actually ranks as the 5th most liberal city in the country when you measure voting patterns and past administrations.
A quarter of the population here claims Irish ancestry and that’s by FAR the highest in the country.
The job scene here is great and there’s a booming tech scene in Boston. Despite the fact that there’s a bunch of local smart college grads, sometimes, these tech companies can’t find enough people to fill all the open positions. City wide, only about 5% of Boston is out of work, putting it towards the bottom when it comes to the number of people out of work of all major US cities.
As you can see, the streets are really clean, and the parks are generally well kept.

I've lived in Boston for over 10 years now, and it's probably the least favorite city I've lived in. The winters are long (no one really likes winter here, everyone loves the fall), the summers are short, it's super expensive, and the people are unfriendly. A lot of people who live in Boston are not native to the area. Most of the friendly people I've encountered grew up in different states. It's challenging to make friends and many people here are status conscious and borderline rude. It's a really beautiful city though, with lots of great parks, low crime, and opportunity for jobs.

@@williamberry4615 Well thanks. I literally live in Springfield and the way people talk about it you expect to be stabbed around the corner. Never had that problem. Every city has crime. It frequent if you consider the population but again, people see the statistics and it paint this image that if you came here you would see a shooting in front of your own eyes which is still unlikely. Never even heard a gunshot living here. I’ve lived in a couple different areas in the past decade. Indian Orchard, Metro Downtown, Liberty Heights, and Sixteen Acres. I didn’t grow up in Springfield either, so I’m not bias in that regards. I’ve lived outside of springfield most my life so far. Spent most of my childhood in Ludlow right outside Springfield but didn’t go to Springfield much. So I was skeptical of the city myself. I’ve also lived in Cape Cod for a bit. Living in Springfield isn’t a war zone. People a generally nice and friendly. I use to walk to my community college using public transport and again had no problems traveling through Forest Park and Downtown. And I was a young 18 year old white women. Not that, that should mean much but might give some people and idea about how comfortable I was to be alone. And sometimes it was dark by the time I caught the bus. Also again. Lived in the heart of downtown too and was again fine. No one bothered us. My mom would actually give some food to the homeless people if we had extra. Defiantly a lot homeless going on in the city. I won’t deny that a problem. Mostly lower class to lower middle class living here. My family also being in that lower middle class to almost lower class category depending on what your range is. I’m sure there are bad street you might not want to be on at night. But I feel every city got those. I’d say most of the violent crime is contained to people already involved in that crime. They’re are car break ins but everywhere has crime again so it not like no place is void of those. We’ve never had a car broken into and we’ve kept it in the driveway unlocked. Nothing stolen from our yard either. Again is not like the street or riddle with crime. I think Main Street has some rich history. Did some research projects on downtown. I think the main problem with springfield is just money. I would really love to see the city revived. Like I said, the city actually has a surprisingly rich history. I learned so much I didn’t know about the city like how many things come from Springfield. I feel thought a lot of the states money is centralized around Boston and I’m talking about any of the good infrastructure project. Which is why Western Mass and even Cape Cod are in decline. We have great things to offer but no attention is being brought to it. I’ve argued for the high speed rail between Boston and Springfield which would hopefully bring some of the wealth out East to the West. We have much cheaper housing over here compared to Boston. Like I think the median sales price is 230K. My families house we purchased for less than 200K and it’s a nice 3 bedroom colonial. Non of our past house were above 200K in fact. Not even the condo we had downtown which was HUGE. Cheaper actually then we we live in now. Like it was only 2 bedroom but the square footage was much bigger, closer to 2000 sqft were as our colonials only like 1000. Also someone like me who prefers public transport could stay here and easily work out in Boston. Would help both with Boston’s high prices and the economic issue out West. Springfield is just run down which just makes the city feel sad. Like there are just some really gorgeous historic building that are abandon that I would love to see brought back to life. I think it really would liven the city up. That includes downtowns gorgeous mid-rise building and there’s these beautiful Victorians neighborhoods scattered across the city. Huge Victorians actually. I think MGM was the mayor’s hopeless dream for saving the city but unless the rest of the city is shown some love and appreciation the casino isn’t going to last long and will be another abandon thing left downtown which is just a shame. So don’t go talking down Springfield based on the statistics posted on the media. It not no Boston. It no great city it just a small city. But there are people who care about the city. There are gorgeous areas and homes here. We are just plagued with a corrupt government and some really bad city planning that has limited the cities potential *cough* the placement of I-91 cutting off the city from the river, like who’s bright idea was it back in the day to put a highway right in front of the water views. -_- *cough* If we can improve the economy here, bring back some jobs, get the household income up, I think the homes here would really start to shine again. Like I could go on all day about how much I grown to love this little city for its potential to be great again. Honestly just having a quick look at the wiki page and you be surprised how much springfield was once an upcoming city and had so much going on here. That and my grandmothers memories of the city really help keep the image alive for. She remember a day when going downtown was an event to get dressed up for. Gosh if only city planners and government would have valued some of the cities older charm before demolishing is and paving over it. Bring back the cute trolly cars. 😢 I think if you came here and visited Main Street, the heart of downtown you just get the sense that the place is empty and quiet and run down but not necessarily scary like someone about to jump you.

My girlfriend actually just bought a house in Mattapan. Her neighbors seem nice, when I move in I know I'll love it. For her, she would actually prefer the Dorchester, Roxbury Mattapan area due to how culturally rich those places are (both of us are Caribbean Americans). For some that might not be important, but for us it is, even if the place isn't perceived as "safe" by some.

I have lived in the Fenway since 1997. What was once a slightly sketchy and relatively affordable neighborhood has been overrun by developers, who have "transformed" the area into a gentrified sinkhole of ugly office and apartment towers filled with wealthy students and even wealthier "internationals" who add nothing beyond their presence. This has driven up rents to absurd levels and forced out locals.

I grew up in Chelsea, have worked in Lynn, Somerville, Boston, and Stoneham. I went to law school in Boston. I love it here. But this video is correct that people are moving west to we purchased a home in the Groton area for less than a home around the city or the 95 93 corridor in Stoneham/Woburn. Overall living and growing up here has been fantastic. It's easy to get to the beach, museums, zoos, and the aquarium. No matter where you live there are positives and negatives. There are many many hobbies and interest groups. The public transport is mainly toward and away from Boston to get from one suburban town to another you must go into Boston and back out on another line. Sometimes it is faster to walk 5 miles than take the highly indirect public transport. Also going into the city can be a oneway trip as the public transport shuts down early evening to get back to the suburbs, thus leaving you stranded.

I grew up in JP in the 80s. It's changed a lot. I remember the Southend in the 80s as well. I used to stay away from that area since it was so dangerous with druggies. As a Hispanic, I never even thought of going to Southie or Charlestown. Guaranteed I'd get picked on or chased out of that area back then. It's changed a lot where I can safely go there now. There's a lot of gentrification all over the place in Boston. It's impossible to buy a house anywhere in Boston or near it since those sales turn into bidding wars. You find a house you like for $650k then it sells for $780k easily. Impossible. Good thing my sights are down south in Florida! On another note, I wasn't aware of that methadone mile. Man. I grew up in Boston pretty much all around and now live a few hours north but still visit frequently and have many friends in the area. This is pretty spot on imo. In the late 90’s-early 00’s places like Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan were places to avoid and, from what friends say, it sounds like things are getting better in Dorchester at least. I would love to move back and have continuously looked for options but it’s so very expensive to live there that it’s simply not possible despite working in the tech industry with a decent career. I hope that someday I will be able to move back though, there’s a certain charm that keeps pulling me back.

One thing to add on, south of city lines are quincy and weymouth. They're both cheep, weymouth is relatively safe, very low crime but big drug market. And the majority of quincy is basically a suburban copy of dorchester. Suprisingly, weymouth is one of the most independent places in Mass. The good places are Marina Bay, Union Point, and sometimess the landing. The bad places are Bicknel square, quincy shore drive, Lake street, and jackson square. They both aren't very gentrified and you'll find crappy looking buildings and houses with extrodinary interiors. Quincy is more of a city vibe and weymouth is more county-ish. I've been in the area my whole life and dispite looking trashy its a great area to live. Its the kind of place where people don't care about politics and live like normal people. The homes are like 400-600k and rent is only like 1600 /m.

What to do in the Boston area if you don’t care about sports, don’t drink that much, and are not a brainiac. It’s the arts and music. Once upon a decade there were 20+ clubs with live original music everywhere with 3 bands a night. Hopefully once Covid dies down the scene will revive. The Plow and Star in Cambridge was a typical club, the Middle East in Cambridge, and the Midway on the other side of Boston.
